The course will follow the river as it winds down American Fork Canyon. As runners exit the canyon, they will run along a paved trail through Cedar Hills Golf Course. The trail continues through Cedar Hills, running through Cedar Hills and Pleasant Grove neighborhoods. The course then joins with the Murdock Canal Trail, turning past Fox Hollow Golf Course. The final mile winds through the American Fork trail system, finishing with a grand entry into Art Dye park!

PACERSWe will have pacers to help you maintain your speed and meet your half marathon timing goal. Pacers will hold signs above their heads with the time of their expected finish time. The times below are the target finish times.• 1:30, 1:35, 1:40, 1:45, 1:50, 1:55,

2:00, 2:05, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30

COURSE CLOSURE/CUT-OFF TIMEDuring the event, the westbound lane from the mouth of American Fork Canyon to Tibble Fork will be closed to motorized vehicles from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. All runners are required to be out of the canyon by 8 a.m. (The canyon is the first seven miles of the course. This means you must be averaging at least a 16-minute mile pace to be out of the canyon by 8 a.m.) Any remaining runners will be picked up by the sag wagon and brought to the mouth of the canyon or finish line if they don’t wish to finish the race. The entire course will close to runners at 10 a.m.

SAFETYBecause SR 92 (the stretch of road from the mouth of American Fork Canyon up to Tibble Fork) is a narrow canyon road, traffic crews will close one lane of traffic until the mouth of American Fork Canyon. Whether in the canyon or anywhere else on the course, please run with extreme caution to ensure your safety. Please stay in the westbound lane. Participants run at their own risk.

CLOTHING/GEAR BAGSThe bag you receive at packet pick up will be tagged with your bib number and will act as your gear bag for collection at the start line. The vehicles carrying these bags down to the finish line will leave at 5:50 a.m. Please have your items secured in your gear bag and dropped in the vehicle before the scheduled departure. Any clothing or other items left along any part of the course route will be considered a charitable donation to Deseret Industries. THE GROUND FLOORWayne Sleight’s first

half marathon was a little spooky. He

ran the Provo Halloween Half without training. This COO of 97th Floor learned that running 13 miles isn’t the same thing as running one mile 13 times. Embarrassed of his race time, Wayne researched other half marathons where he could redeem himself. When he read about the AF Canyon Run Against Cancer, he felt a connection. The downhill course was a big draw, as well as the time of year. But the most significant reason Wayne chose to pound the pavement again was the cause. His father died from prostate cancer when Wayne was 16. “I cried so much when my dad died that I’ve mostly been out of tears since then,” Wayne says.

“But I got emotional running the race. I fell in love with the community that surrounds this event!” This year will be Wayne’s fifth time coming down the canyon. He participates to honor his dad and also to fulfill the generous mission at 97th Floor. The digital marketing company pledges 1 percent of its gross revenue to charity, and the AF Canyon Run Against Cancer is the company’s charity of choice. Chris Bennett, the founder of 97th Floor, is married to Wayne’s sister. He watched his father-in-law pass away from cancer, and then his own father was diagnosed with the disease. Fortunately, his father beat cancer, which is another reason the company loves funding an event where proceeds go to families fighting cancer. The

cause hits so close to home. “When we decided to align ourselves with the race, we announced it to the company.

I was surprised to learn that every employee has a connection to cancer,” Wayne says. “Their parent, grandma, aunt or friend

has survived or died from it.” Most of the 97th Floor employees run the race or help with the sponsor tent at the finish line. The company provides race entries for clients, some of whom fly in from other parts of the country to race against cancer. It has become one of Wayne’s favorite days of the year. “It gives me a chance to think about my dad,” he says. “When he was diagnosed, he was only

supposed to live a few weeks. We had a year with him, and in some ways that was the best year of his life. He spent time with his family and he focused on his health. I’m raising my own children with healthier eating habits because of my dad.” The company focuses on wellness all year-round. They bring in speakers and have company-wide initiatives to support healthy living.

FLOOREDWith 74 employees, 97th Floor is not the largest tech company in Silicon Slopes. But they are lead-ing the way with company culture, including their focus on health and wellness. The Lehi company has been named “Best Company to Work For” by BusinessQ magazine and has received national attention for its ROWE status (Results Only Work Environment). They don’t track office hours or vacation days — employees are simply tasked with getting the job done. Healthy approach!

97th Floor COO Wayne Sleight first ran the AF Can-yon Run Against Cancer to honor his father. Now he’s brought most of his compa-ny to the trail to honor and support their own angels and survivors.

Founder Chris Bennett (left) and COO Wayne Sleight (right) have built 97th Floor on a founda-tion of wellness, and their mission matches that of the AF Canyon Run Against Cancer.

THEFrances W. Burton FOUNDATION

Without health insurance, a cancer diagnosis can drain a

bank account as fast as it attacks the body. We can’t tell the stories of the estimated 1.7 million people diagnosed with cancer last year. But we can share two stories of women who have benefited from favorable health insurance as they look brightly to the future.

JENN’S STORY Jenn Brown ran track in both high school and college and kept up those habits after marriage and motherhood. In 2014, Jenn was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer at age 32. Her mother, father and sister had each faced a cancer diagnosis, “so cancer was already on my radar,” Jenn says. The doctors prescribed radiation and surgery to remove her thyroid and some lymph

nodes. The next year the doctors found more cancer, so she had another surgery and another round of radiation. Jenn’s husband, Isaac, works for Health Equity — an AF Canyon Run Against Cancer sponsor — so the family receives healthcare coverage through Health Equity via a health savings account. With health insurance in place, “the financial aspect of cancer wasn’t so bad,” Jenn says, which meant they could focus on recovery. Jenn recovered well and is now on the six-month schedule for check ups. When Isaac registered the two of them for the AF Canyon Run for 2018, he listed Jenn as a cancer survivor even though she didn’t want extra attention. Still, she ran with the purple tag. “I was a little bit embarrassed at first. But I felt proud of my body,” she says. “One of the big takeaways from my experience is that there are a million people

willing to help. You are never alone — even if it feels like you are. There are a bunch of people going through the same thing. There’s comfort in that.” MELINDA’S STORY Three days before she was born, Melinda McLain’s father passed away from lymphoma. When Melinda was 30, her mother, Terry, was diagnosed with breast cancer, and 14 years later Terry received an ovarian cancer diagnosis. After a few tests, the doctors discovered Terry had the BRCA2 gene mutation, which meant she passed on a 50 percent chance of having the mutation to her children. After testing, they learned four of the five children had the mutation, including Melinda. “My mom happened to get lucky and they caught her cancer early. I was able to be with her and watch her go through her

cancer, but I thought, ‘I don’t want this for myself,’” she says. To be proactive about her personal health, Melinda had a hysterectomy, a mastectomy and an oophorectomy, and three months after her preventative surgeries she had reconstructive surgery. Melinda’s Health Equity insurance covered the preventative surgeries, so even though medical expenses totaled close to $60,000, she and her husband only paid their deductible of $3,000. Now Melinda has a 2 percent chance of getting cancer, which is less than the average person’s chance of being diagnosed. “I’ve never regretted the surgeries,” she says. “It’s taken my worry away. Between ages 30 to 45, I worried about cancer all the time and was doing self-checks to make sure I didn’t feel any lumps. Taking action has given me peace of mind.”
