DIESEL ENGINE

Odor

Diesel equipped vehicles are equipped with aDPF (diesel particulate filter) in the exhaustsystem. This filter is a self-cleaning catalystreferred to as regeneration. Regeneration willoccur at various mileages depending on drivecycle, weather, and altitude. During regenera-tion, exhaust temperatures can reach 1,112°F(600°C) in the DPF. During the first few regen-erations, you will notice a burning odor orsomething smelling hot, this is normal andplease continue to drive the vehicle. If at anytime the engine light is on, please visit anauthorized dealer.

Noise

Diesel engines can create noises that may seemas a concern. The nature of a diesel engine iscompression ignition where compressed air andfuel are mixed and ignited. Weather, Baromet-ric Pressure, Altitude, and Temperature willaffect how fuel is ignited in the engine. En-gine’s will sound different from day to day orprevious model years. Clicking, ticking, or lightknocking is normal and will change from day today and as the engine breaks in, this is normal.Diesel equipped vehicles also have an exhaustafter treatment system to reduce emissionsutilizing a DPF (addressed in Odor category)and an Selective Reduction Catalyst (SCR). TheSCR reduces NOx using the Diesel ExhaustFluid (DEF) system. DEF is injected directlyinto the SCR through an dosing module. Thisprocess will create a clicking sound and attimes, will make noise even with the vehicleshut off. This is normal as the DEF dosingmodule is purging DEF. If at any time the checkengine light is on, please visit an authorizeddealer.

Fluid Leaks

Diesel engines and new vehicles use assembly /anti-corrosive lube to assure the correct assem-bly torque on fasteners and prevent corrosion. You may notice areas that may appear damp asa fluid leak but is typically residual assemblylube, this is normal. Dealers make every effortto remove residual fluids during vehicle pre-inspection. If at any time fluid is found drippingon the ground, please visit an authorizeddealer. If at any time the check engine light ison, please visit an authorized dealer.

Engine Idle

Diesel engines are equipped with variable idlespeed. Periodically your engine can idle as highas 1100 rpm while in Park (P). This is normalfor engine warm up and emissions. During thishigh idle mode, the engine will sound different, this is normal. The engine will return to low idleif the brake or clutch pedal are depressed. Werecommend not pressing either pedal unlessyou are ready to drive the vehicle as this willinterrupt warm up or emissions strategy. If atany time the check engine light is on, pleasevisit an authorized dealer.

Drivability

Diesel engines are controlled by a PCM (Pow-ertrain Control Module). With state of the arttechnology and emissions regulations, vehiclesmay perform differently from one model year toanother.

Drivability can also be affected by the following:

• After-treatment regeneration

• Two footed driving (if brake pedal and accel-erator are pressed at the same time, you willnotice a delay in power).

• Temperature

• Weather

• Wind

• Load

• Altitude

• Gear Ratio

These conditions are considered natural eventsand may not be corrected. If at any time thecheck engine light is on, please visit an autho-rized dealer.

Fuel Economy

Diesel engines offer superb fuel economy undercertain conditions. Fuel economy should im-prove after the vehicle is broke in. Many factorswill affect or reduce fuel economy.

• After-treatment Regeneration

• Cold Temperatures

• Wind

• Extended Idling

• Towing

• Short Trips

• Fuel Quality

• City Driving

• Aftermarket Grills

• Oversized Tires

• Gear Ratios

If at any time your check engine light is on,please visit an authorized dealer.

DIESEL ENGINE STARTING

• Your RAM is equipped with state-of-the-artceramic glow plugs to ensure quick starts.

• Some delay of engine cranking may occurwhile the glow plugs reach operating tem-perature. The length of time will vary from1 to 5 seconds depending on the engine andambient temperatures.

• Remote start operation of your vehicle willalso automatically activate the glow plugs asneeded and no additional steps are required, you may experience a delay in starting whenusing remote start.

OPERATING YOUR DIESEL ENGINE IN

VERY COLD ENVIRONMENTS

• A winter front or cold weather cover is to beused in ambient temperatures below 32°F(0°C), especially during extended idle con-ditions to reduce condensation build-upwithin the engine crankcase. If a winter frontor cold weather cover is to be used, a per-centage of the total grille opening area mustbe left uncovered to provide sufficient airflow to the charge air cooler and automatictransmission oil cooler. The percentage ofopening must be increased with the increas-ing ambient air temperature and/or engineload. If the cooling fan can be heard cyclingfrequently, increase the size of the openingin the winter front. A suitable cold weathercover is available from your MOPAR® dealer.

• Climatized fuel or fuel treatment may berequired for operation in temperatures under-10°F (-23°C).

• Use of an engine block heater is recom-mended for routine operation under -10°F(-23°C) and is required for cold startingunder -20°F (-28°C). If your vehicle is notequipped with the electrical cord for theblock heater, it is available from your Mopardealer.

For further information, and applicable warn-ings and cautions, please refer to the DieselSupplement at www.mopar.com/en-us/care/owners-manual.html (U.S. Residents) orwww.owners.mopar.ca (Canadian Residents).

Diesel Selective Catalytic Reduc-

tion (SCR)/Diesel Particulate Fil-

ter (DPF)

• Your RAM is equipped with an SCR system toreduce Nitrous Oxides (NOx) exhaustemissions.

• The SCR system uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid(DEF) to convert NOx to harmless gases priorto release from the exhaust system.

• It is recommended that DEF is refilled by anauthorized RAM dealer at every oil changeinterval or as required.

• A DEF level gauge is located on your instru-ment cluster.• The DEF gauge may take up to 5 seconds

to update after adding a gallon or more ofDEF to the DEF tank. If you have a faultrelated to the DEF system, the gauge maynot update to the new level. See an au-thorized dealer for service.

• The DEF gauge may not immediately up-date after a refill if the temperature of theDEF fluid is below 12°F (-11°C). TheDEF line heater will usually warm up theDEF fluid and allow the gauge to updateafter a period of run time. Under very coldconditions, it is possible that the gaugemay not reflect the new fill level forseveral drives.

• Should you run your vehicle out of DEF, aminimum of 2 gallons (7.6 liters) of DEF isrequired for the engine to restart.

• Never “top-off” the DEF tank after a normalDEF fill. If DEF is spilled, it should becleaned with mild soap and water to preventcorrosion or damage to components and fin-ished surfaces.

• Your RAM is also equipped with a DieselParticulate Filter (DPF) that removes dieselparticulate matter or soot from the exhaustgas. Automatic regeneration self-cleaningcycles occur when the correct operating con-ditions are met.

• The instrument cluster display will indicatewhen a regeneration is in progress and willprovide instructions if any action is required.

For further information, and applicable warn-ings and cautions, please refer to the DieselSupplement at www.mopar.com/en-us/care/owners-manual.html (U.S. Residents) orwww.owners.mopar.ca (Canadian Residents).
