There’s something freeing about getting behind the wheel of a lightweight roadster and venturing to the open road, with the ability to focus more on the journey than the destination. It is for those drivers that Mazda has spent nearly 30 years perfecting its flagship roadster, the MX-5 Miata. The MX-5 has brought joy to millions of drivers across the world, and now it has been perfected with SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine with a power increase of 26 horsepower and 3 lb-ft of torque and an increased redline from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 rpm compared to last year’s model. 2019 MAZDA MX-5 OVERVIEW

Of all that is right with the idea of the automobile, few things are more satisfying than a roadster. A roadster so purely epitomizes the notion that a car should be a pleasure to drive, enveloping the driver and passenger in an experience. With the lowering of its roof, a roadster brings scenery into the cockpit; it welcomes you to engage in the world instead of insulating yourself from it.

It is, perhaps, for these very reasons why the Mazda MX-5 Miata has remained such a constant in the automotive marketplace for nearly 30 years. It has won fans for its design, sublime driving dynamics and everyday usable performance.

In 1989 when MX-5 debuted at the Chicago Auto Show, few could have predicted its staying power. Competitors have come and gone. Yet, MX-5 has taught much of the world how to properly enjoy the thrill of driving. While this lightweight marvel has evolved through four generations, with the 1 millionth produced in April 2016, the 2019 model year marks another watershed moment.

The 2019 MX-5’s engine adopts new technologies in its SKYACTIV-G 2.0 engine, including lighter pistons and freer breathing exhaust. Its transmission employs a new lightweight, dual-mass flywheel. While MX-5 has won its share of praise, Mazda’s engineers never settle. When an opportunity arises to make the beloved roadster better, they run with it. They dream up their ideal sports car, and then they build it, with the mission of elevating the experience like never before.

“FEW THINGS ARE MORE SATISFYING

WHAT’S NEW? KEEP CLIMBING

Of course, the biggest update to the 2019 Mazda MX-5 is its newly enhanced SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine, which employs a number of upgrades over previous versions. Redline has been increased from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 rpm compared to last year’s model.

The MX-5’s throttle diameter has been increased to size of Mazda’s larger SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter engine, and other measures have been taken, including:

- Each piston being reduced 27g in mass due to a minimized skirt area- Connecting rods being reduced 41g- The exhaust camshaft now has an increased valve opening angle and life height- Larger valve and exhaust port diameters - The valve changes have led to 30-percent fewer pumping losses and a smoother, more extended feeling of acceleration- Optimized port shapes for an improved airflow tumble, leading to greater, more efficient combustion speed- A low-inertia, dual-mass flywheel replaces the previous single-mass flywheel, lowering inertia, improving engine response and reducing drivetrain noise- Revised final drive ratio from 3.454 to 3.583, Improving acceleration (6AT models only)

The net results are 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, an increase of 26 horsepower and 3 lb-ft, respectively. The numbers only tell so much, though; power is more usable throughout the engine’s entire range, with the engine responding more quickly to every input.

Ensconced or enlivened? Why not both?

The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata takes nearly 30 years of heritage—reinventing the roadster time after time—and takes it a step further. More powerful, courtesy of a thoroughly reworked engine, MX-5’s engine was rethought with the sole purpose of deepening the connection the driver and car share. This is what Mazda calls Jinba Ittai— “horse and rider as one.”

Since going on sale in 2015, MX-5 has continued to garner praise the world over. Now, it’s available with more features, more packages and more options that help the driver truly express who he or she is. MX-5 launched with the mission to “innovate in order to preserve.” Here, it raises the bar.

THE PURSUIT OF “MAZDA PREMIUM”

“Mazda Premium” is a phrase that the company has used since the current-generation Mazda CX-9 went on sale. It’s not an ad slogan. Mazda has made elegantly engineered, designed and executed vehicles since the 1967 Cosmo 110S and continues to do so today throughout its lineup.

Sometimes, it is best exemplified through eye-catching design or craftsmanship. Sometimes, it’s through brilliant engineering. Sometimes, it’s in something as small as beauty in the simplicity of a door handle that opens the door with a brief nudge rather than three or four hand motions that can subconsciously feel cumbersome. Mazda Premium is as much an emotional value as it is a value in the product. It’s the feeling a driver and passengers get when they step foot inside a Mazda vehicle, from the smallest MX-5 to the largest CX-9, and feel that the car or crossover SUV exceeds their lofty expectations.

BEAUTY THROUGH RETRACTION

The fourth-generation MX-5 ushered in rakish coupe looks and a unique style with the introduction of the MX-5 RF— or “Retractable Fastback.” An altogether different approach than previous hardtop MX-5 models, MX-5 RF’s roof wasn’t removable; its top panels stow comfortably below the surface in just 13 seconds without intruding on cargo space.

Constructed of steel, aluminum and polymers, its silhouette recalls sporting coupes of the past, replete with buttresses that extend from the roofline. Even with all of the moving parts beneath the surface, the MX-5 RF weighs just 115 lbs. more than its soft top sibling, a testament to Mazda’s continued adherence to its “Gram Strategy.”

Where the MX-5 roadster embodies the purest expression of Mazda’s sports car, MX-5 RF is a sophisticated take, created with the intention to grow MX-5’s customer—and curb—appeal.

PURITY THROUGH PURPOSE

Other design takeaways:

- A new-for-2019 brown soft top option complements MX-5’s design with classic good looks- The available Soul Red Crystal and Machine Gray Metallic, further heighten the quality look of Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design language- The interior design helps maximizes the pleasure of open-top driving- The soft top is easy to operate while seated- Wind noise is controlled to not disrupt the enjoyment of driving with the top down- Designers worked with engineers to ensure that a “wind- in-the-hair” feeling remained—even in MX-5 RF models, with a gentle brush of the hair with the top open keeping the front of the car low was a challenge, given regional bumper-height regulations in different global markets, so the use of LED headlights on all models became a requirement because of the smaller space they require to produce a given amount of light. The headlights possess a clean shape with taut lines that conveys a sense of leanness, stability and beautiful surfaces.

MX-5 was designed around its driver, with thought given to even the slightest details. Pedals have been optimized to fall in-line with the natural movement of the driver’s feet to help achieve greater comfort. The hood has been lowered, the windshield A-pillars pushed back and made more upright for greater visibility and the exterior paint color has been brought into the door panels – all to help provide a greater sensation of the world outside of the car.

Passengers have also been positioned inset to feel in-line with the center of the vehicle. All of this has been done for the Jinba Ittai–“horse and rider as one”–philosophy, elevating the driving experience in connecting the driver with the vehicle. With driver-centric ergonomics and a redesigned cockpit layout, an even greater number of drivers will be able to experience MX-5. Since the debut of the Mazda Shinari concept in 2010, Mazda has been developing its KODO—Soul of Motion design language, which is defined by a long hood, short overhangs, a cropped cabin pushed far back on the body and large wheels moved as far as feasible towards all four corners. The challenge to the design team with MX-5 was to translate the KODO theme to the car’s smaller scale, while keeping true to the car’s pure identity.

Designers focused on the following:

- A deeper expression of the KODO design theme that conveys agility- Body surfaces that richly express the Japanese sense of contrast between stillness and motion- An interior design that breaks down the boundaries between the inside and outside of the car- A snug-feeling cockpit with symmetry and a singular axis that fosters concentration on driving- Designers worked painstakingly to create a shape that was reminiscent of previous MX-5s, but to move forward with a lower, sleeker profile as well that makes MX-5 look as though it is gripping the road

DRIVING DYNAMICS: SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY

SKYACTIV Technology is not just a catchphrase; it is a total effort philosophy to reduce weight while improving safety and efficiency. A byproduct of that is greater handling capabilities and chassis dynamics, providing the driver with a more connected, enjoyable experience.

In the fourth-generation MX-5, Mazda simplified every single part of the car all to create a car with the poise and stability expected of an MX-5. Mazda’s roadster features it’s only application of SKYACTIV-CHASSIS and SKYACTIV-BODY for a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicle.

All of Mazda’s sixth-generation vehicles have employed the “Gram Strategy,” which drives Mazda engineers to seek the tiniest improvements in every possible area of the car – a shave here, a redesign there, a complete rethink somewhere else. As part of that thought process, engineers implemented more high-tensile steel in the vehicle’s structure to improve safety, all while reducing weight. The 2019 MX-5 soft top is approximately 150 lbs. lighter than the third-generation MX-5 and only 189 lbs. heavier than the original 1990 model, which is incredible when you consider the technology and safety features of the new car versus the original.

Like previous MX-5 models, the fourth-generation roadster uses a double-wishbone front suspension and rear multilink setup that is lightweight and highly rigid, while never losing sight of the need to deliver a smooth and civilized street ride. Coupled with the high use of high-tensile steel in the body, frame and underbody crossmembers is a new double-pinion electronic power assist steering (DP-EPAS) rack with a smaller steering gear ratio designed to help instill a sense road feel while reducing steering “kickback.” In discussing the level of detail designed into the new MX-5, even the friction in the steering shaft was reduced by minimizing the angle of the universal-joints in the shaft, because engineers identified a miniscule “catch”-feel through the steering wheel as the joint rotates.

FORM AND FUNCTION: 50/50 BALANCE

As has been the case with all of Mazda’s vehicles since the advent of SKYACTIV Technology, the MX-5’s weight has been reduced from its predecessor to improve efficiency, performance, handling, agility and steering precision. Taking more than 150 lbs. out of what was already one of the lightest vehicles for sale in North America was no easy task, so engineers had to think about each component of the MX-5 to achieve their objectives while maintaining a 50:50 weight distribution.

The air conditioner is approximately 20-percent lighter than the unit in the previous generation. The soft top is 65g lighter than before through the introduction of aluminum top-bows and supports, and is even easier to operate, yet it is insulated to provide a quieter interior. In making the vehicle lighter, the trunk was reshaped to have a wider opening and a deeper recess to allow for two weekend travel bags, which was not possible in previous models.

With the current-generation MX-5, the amount of high-tensile steel (780 MPa or higher) used throughout the structure of the MX-5 has increased from 58 percent of the car to 71 percent. All exterior panels but the windshield frame and doors are made of aluminum, reducing the weight of the body-in-white by approximately 45 lbs. Seats are more than 35-percent thinner than the outgoing model’s, owing to a net and urethane seat material replacing traditional springs. This, in turn, allowed engineers to remove approximately 17 lbs. from each seat and position them lower in the MX-5 for an improved center of gravity, visibility and functionality within the interior for taller drivers. It’s all about the details.Other examples of weight reduction include:

Mazda’s three-prong strategy to safety for every vehicle it sells focuses on:

1. Help prevent accidents altogether with vehicles that provide nimble handling.2. Active safety systems that help to prevent accidents, bundled in Mazda’s safety suite called i-ACTIVSENSE.3. A rigid SKYACTIV-BODY and SKYACTIV-CHASSIS that are designed with a continuous frame from the front bumper through the rear bulkhead. These work to suppress deformation and diffuse impact forces in the event of an accident.

For MX-5, additional reinforcements specially designed for an open-top vehicle were added behind the seats. The structure also is designed to maximize surefootedness in all driving conditions.

In addition, Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite includes several active safety technologies that support safe driving by helping the driver to recognize potential hazards and avert collisions or reduce their severity in situations where they cannot be avoided.

PACKAGING AND PRICING

How do you make the world’s best-selling, two-seat roadster even better? Mazda’s designers and engineers have found the answer with the 2019 MX-5 Miata. Its biggest change comes by way of its thoroughly upgraded SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine, which is now more responsive, efficient and powerful.

Other new updates include a standard tilt/telescoping steering column with 30mm of telescoping and 42mm of tilt range, an aluminum steering column to save weight versus the previous steel unit, a standard rearview camera, available Traffic Sign Recognition and Smart City Brake Support low-speed automatic emergency braking. Additionally, a new brown soft top is available for MX-5 Grand Touring models.

MX-5 Sport continues to serve as the entry point into the MX-5 family, offered exclusively with a black soft top. Standard features include LED headlights and tail lights; 16-inch alloy wheels; cloth seats; dual power side mirrors; power windows; a 6-speaker audio system, including headrest speakers; Bluetooth phone pairing and audio streaming; two USB audio inputs; MAZDA CONNECTTM infotainment with a 7-inch monitor that features both touchscreen and Commander control functions; a leather-wrapped steering wheel, parking brake and shifter knob; steering-wheel-mounted audio controls; and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry.

For 2019, MX-5 Sport can be supplemented with the i-ACTIVSENSE Sport Package that adds low-speed Smart City Brake Support automatic emergency braking, Lane-Departure Warning and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Building upon MX-5 Sport continues to be the more luxurious MX-5 Grand Touring and harder-edged MX-5 Club models. Both are offered as soft tops as well as in MX-5 RF—retractable fastback—configurations.

MX-5 Grand Touring upgrades from the base MX-5 Sport with 17-inch dark silver wheels; body-color interior trim; auto on/off headlights; an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror; rain-sensing windshield wipers; automatic climate control; auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink®; heated, leather-trimmed seats; a 9-speaker BOSE® Premium audio system;

a fabric-lined soft top for greater sound insulation; Sirius XM Satellite radio with a 4-month trial subscription, Mazda Navigation; Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert; new Traffic Sign Recognition; Adaptive Front-lighting System; High Beam Control; Lane-Departure Warning; and Smart City Brake Support.

Listening to customers’ demands, Mazda will offer a new GT-S Package for MX-5 Grand Touring models equipped with the SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual transmission, equipping those models with a front shock tower brace, limited-slip rear differential and Bilstein dampers. MX-5 RF models with the GT-S Package will also come equipped with the hand-painted black roof that had previously only been offered on the 2017 MX-5 RF Launch Edition.

MX-5 Club models continue the two-pronged, higher-trim strategy, offering a harder-edged foil to the MX-5 Grand Touring. MX-5 Club builds upon MX-5 Sport with standard Bilstein dampers, shock tower brace and limited-slip rear differential in models equipped with the SKYACTIV-MT transmission. All other MX-5 Club models receive standard heated cloth seats with red contrast stitching, body-color interior trim; Metallic Black alloy 17-inch wheels, front air dam and rear lip spoilers, a 9-speaker BOSE® Premium audio system, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with a 4-month trial subscription and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

MX-5 Club models are available with an i-ACTIVSENSE Club Package that comes with Smart City Brake Support and Lane-Departure Warning.

Additionally, MX-5 Club SKYACTIV-MT can be had with the Brembo/BBS Package and Brembo/BBS/Recaro Package. The Brembo/BBS Package include front Brembo rotors and calipers; red-painted brake calipers on all four corners; 17-inch, dark gunmetal BBS forged alloy wheels; functional side sill extensions; a rear bumper skirt; and heated leather-upholstered seats. The Brembo/BBS/Recaro Package, which returns for the soft top and is new for MX-5 RF, replaces the leather-trimmed seats with heated Recaro buckets and includes a black-painted roof on MX-5 RF.

All 2019 MX-5s come standard in the U.S. with a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine, producing 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. That represents an increase of 26 horsepower and 3 lb-ft of torque over the previous model. Thanks to a host of internal improvements, including lighter pistons and rods and a larger throttle, MX-5’s engine produces more torque throughout its rev range and enjoys a 700 rpm higher redline for the new model year. The new engine comes paired to either a standard SKYACTIV-MT 6-speed manual transmission or an available 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Sport mode.
