NEW! Ride With GPS

We are excited to share that the Ride has moved to a NEW RWGPS Club account! This allows us to offer its features and benefits without participants (you!) having to pay the $5 monthly fee for the premium account functions that help us all stay on track in the Ride. If you already have a premium account, everything stays the same – no need to create a new account. Click here to learn more about the member benefits! This club account will be where the routes are housed for event weekend. Each participant will be able to:

View, download, print cue sheets and route details

*Get turn by turn directions (without the individual $5 subscription)

Use Live Logging – share your location on social and have friends see where you are every step of the way!

This is going to make route communication a lot easier for participants, (both crew and rider), staff and E360. The biggest benefit is that everyone will have access to the live turn-by-turn directions without having to create an additional account or purchasing the individual membership!

Please be sure to join the Ride for Life Club account before Friday September 6th. Please do not share this link with anyone.

After accessing the link, please follow the instructions to join the club (set required name & email)

We’ve temporarily hidden the event weekend routes. We will make the routes visible as soon as you’re all in the club.

Sept 4 – 6: JERSEY PICK-UP, LUGGAGE & BIKE DROP

200-Mile Riders: You have 2 options for getting your bike & luggage to Opening/Start: (1) Bring your bike & luggage with you at 5-6AM check-in on September 7th @ Winnemac Park; or (2) use our convenient, early drop-off – per below – so you can show up on Saturday ready to go! 100-Mile Riders: We strongly urge early drop-off, per below! You do have the option to bring your bike & luggage with you for 5-6AM check-in on Saturday, Sept 7th, if the times below don’t accommodate your schedule!

NEW PROCEDURE THIS YEAR for Luggage & Bike drop-off: We have an easy way for you to drop your bike and luggage at TPAN for transport to opening Day 1 (at Winnemac Park) or, for 100-mile riders, to Tower Hill Camp for your Day 2 ride. We’re also changing WHERE you drop things, so avoid interruptions in TPAN’s client services on the drop-off days (Thanks to YOU, we’re serving more people than ever before!).

WHERE: BACK SIDE of TPAN’s address, per below. Please DO NOT bring bikes or luggage to TPAN’s front, street entrance!

Arriving by CAR: This process will function like a drive-thru! Come to the back of TPAN in the 5800 North block of Broadway, using the alley between Catalpa Ave and Bryn Mawr. Call or text the designated drop-off contact above (Andrew or James) for the day and we will assist you right away. Arriving on bike or on foot: When you arrive at TPAN, please text or call James or Andrew (numbers above in schedule block), and we will meet you in the alley to accept your bike and bags.

100-MILE RIDERS: you must drop off your bike and luggage at TPAN by Friday Sept 6th to ensure it is properly packed for transport to camp. You may instead choose to bring your bike & overnight bag to 5-6AM drop-off at Winnemac Park on Saturday, Sept 7th, yet early drop-off makes transport easiest for you and our Ride support teams!

NOTE: The Crew cars for 100-milers will not transport bikes and luggage to Michigan, so it’s important to bring both to TPAN by Friday. AT BIKE/LUGGAGE DROP – Whether you drop off early or on Saturday 5-6AM – you will receive your:

Event Kit (i.e., your jersey, hat, vest) – IF you ordered these

Rider Supply Bag, with items that accompany you or your bike/bag. This includes:

Housing Info for Tower Hill Camp

Rider Number Tag (required attachment for your bike)

Rider Number Helmet ID

Luggage Tag (to attached to your overnight bag) Complimentary Nutrition Items from Hammer Nutrition & Jimmy Bar

SOCIAL MEDIA & EVENT WEEK Before the big weekend: All week, you’ll see posts and pre-event messaging in our Ride for Life Chicago media – on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. These will include count-down posts to the big opening day and Finale Festival.

We ask everyone to help amplify our voice and Ride for Life Chicago mission by liking, sharing and re-posting or re-tweeting! With EVERY re-post or personal post, ALWAYS include your personal Ride for Life Chicago page link or rideforlifechicago.org, so friends can support you!

#RideforLifeChi #GiveRideGoFurther

Ride weekend: This is the time to post photos and images from the route, camp, and finish line! This supports your fundraising AND helps recognize all the people who have donated to your efforts! Consider drafting your posts BEFORE the Ride, so you have them in Drafts or on your device for pasting into your social media. Example: I’m on the road this weekend cycling miles to help save lives! Thank you to the

many friends who’ve supported me in this mission –There’s still time to donate! Check out my page @ _______ #RideforLifeChi #ThankYou #GiveRideGoFurther

ON THE ROUTE

SAFETY reminders. The safety of each and every volunteer is our top priority. When riding: Use hand signals and call out your intentions at all times. Share the work of calling out obstacles, announcing cars or oncoming traffic. When passing another rider, always do so on the left and alert the rider with a loud “ON

YOUR LEFT.” Failing to call out your intentions and/or use hand signals could result in an accident.

Riders are reminded to follow all traffic laws, stop at stop signs and stop lights, and to not ride more than two abreast. The event route intersects with multiple railways. At times you may get caught at a train crossing, but don’t panic or stress! We know this may take a little wind out of your sails, but remember that you have an entire community behind you and cheering you on!

REQUIRED CHECK-INS ALL RIDERS will be required to check in at specific pit stops along the route. At Checkpoints, you will be checked in with Zkipster mobile app so all participants are accounted for. Find a volunteer calling out for check-ins and be sure to give them your Rider Number! THERE ARE 4 REQUIRED CHECK-IN LOCATIONS ON EACH DAY:

MORNING START - Opening Ceremonies on Day 1, Camp on Day 2

Pit Stop @ La Rabida Hospital (Pit Stop 1 on Day 1, last Pit Stop on Day 2)

LUNCH STOP – Trailblazers Bike barn

FINISH/CLOSING – Tower Hill Camp on Day 1, Winnemac Park on Day 2. CHECK-IN IS MEANT TO BE EASY, yet we need your help! If you don’t want to stop and rest or refuel at the required check-in location, you can cycle on after you have had a volunteer check you in by your Rider Number!

ROUTE MARKINGS

The route and all turns will be marked by orange directional arrows on the road. Each turn will have two arrows leading up to the turn, and one confirmation arrow after the turn. Additionally, the Route will be marked with mile markers every 10 miles, and pit stops will be designated with blue RIDE FOR LIFE CHICAGO signs.

Ride for Life Chicago Participant Guide Page 8 of 17

PIT STOP INFO AND POWER-UP GUIDELINES

Pit stops have firm OPEN & CLOSE times. Pit stops close on time, which makes it imperative that you manage your time wisely at every stop! The timing of each pit stop has been calculated to accommodate faster and slower riders, so that crew and pit teams can support everyone efficiently. Rule of thumb: Riders wishing to ride at a 10-14MPH pace should plan on no more than SEVEN minutes at each pit stop and TWENTY-FIVE minutes at lunch.

NOTE: If you have not arrived at a pit stop before its scheduled close time, Crew will power you up to the nearest stop so that you may fill up your water bottles, grab a snack, and use the bathroom. Alternatively, you may choose to be powered up a full pit stop to give yourself additional time to finish the day’s ride.

CUE SHEETS & RIDE WITH GPS: TPAN will publish cue sheets online (2-3 days before the Ride), distribute printed cue sheets at Check-in, and post a link to a live version of the course route in the Ride with GPS App. Riders are reminded to be conservative with your cell phone battery. Charging stations will be available at Pit Stop 3 / Lunch to recharge devices.

MECHANICS: Mechanical support will be available along the route, but all riders should be capable of self-sufficiency—carrying the necessary supplies and familiar with how to use them to fix a flat, etc. If you encounter a mechanical issue that you can’t fix, request that Crew power you up to the mechanics’ location:

Saturday: (1) Start @ Winnemac Park, (2) ; Pit Stop 3 / Lunch; Pit Stop 5; Camp

Sunday: Camp; Pit Stop 3 / Lunch; Pit Stop 4 , Winnemac Park

SANITATION AT PIT & WATER STOPS: To ensure everyone’s health and safety, we ask that riders keep the following in mind at pit stops:

Remove cycling gloves before handling food and snacks

Visit the sanitation station: o Remove visible dirt with a hand wipe o Use hand sanitizer before grabbing a snack

Allow a gloved volunteer to get you ice and to hand you any unwrapped food items

TRAIN CROSSINGS: What to do if you are delayed

Use this time to recover, refuel w/snack bar & water, take a quick break. PRO TIP! – If you’re stopped at a train crossing, grab a selfie or a group shot with the

people around you, Share it on social with the link to your fundraising page and keep the fundraising moving!!

If stopped at a train crossing for more than 15 minutes, consider this your break so you don’t have to stop at the next Water Station or Pit Stop*

If delayed for more than 30 minutes, be sure that your section Crew or a team lead knows where you are – We will notify crews and teams ahead of you! You can also notify the Command Center line on your Rider Number tag on your bike.

CREW SUPPORT & COMMUNICATIONS

COMMUNICATING BETWEEN RIDERS & CREW – THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN: Riders and Crew members will utilize a thumbs up/thumbs down system of communication along the route.

When you need help: If you see a Crew member driving by and you need assistance – give them a “THUMBS DOWN” to signal for them to pull over.

When you’re A-OK: If you see a Crew member going by and they are giving you a “thumbs up/thumbs down” please respond with a “THUMBS UP” if you are okay.

WHAT IF I NEED ASSISTANCE ON THE ROUTE?

IF you need assistance like powering up, bike support, or any other help. o First, look to see if your Crew, Route Marshal, or any support team is near to

assist you – use the “THUMBS DOWN” sign. (This can be important if you are in a low-signal area for your mobile service provider.)

o Reminder: every section has a Route Marshal & Crew team, and our last riders will have a designated “caboose Ridder” to help ID final passage in each section.

o CALL the Ride Command Center line – 773-852-9889.

We will ask for your name and Rider Number, location or identifying area info, and ascertain your need (e.g., flat tire assistance, injury, etc)

Command Center line staff will relay your need and location to our Crew, Medical Crew (as needed), and support team.

o In the rare circumstance that Command Center line is not connecting, you can call our Ride team support leads – Andrew Miller or James Craig, whose numbers will be on the back of your Ride Number tag.

Your Ride Number Tag (on your bike) will have all this information and look something like:

ANDREW MILLER

SUNDAY POWERING UP: Riders who feel unable to ride Day 2’s full 100 miles are welcome to request that Crew power them up along the route on Sunday morning. Riders may choose to be dropped at pit stops 1, 2, or 3 (lunch). Please sign-up at the pavilion by 9PM on Saturday evening to arrange a power up on the following day. You will still be required to manage your time accordingly and may need to wait for the proceeding pits stops to open before you leave from the stop at which you begin. *Crew will not power you up to a pit stop that has not opened*

CREW COMMAND CHAIN: Your best friends on the road. Please remember that our Crew teams are working hard to make sure you have a safe and fully supported Ride experience!
