weLcome TO THE waitaki arts Festival
Kia ora and welcome to the Waitaki Arts Festival – join us on a fun journey through the festival.
You will notice an underlying theme for this year’s festival… last time was bugs, this year it’s birds – those wonderful wild birds owls and ravens – not that we see many of these in our skies, but we have all heard many tales and rhymes relating to them.
What a coup having the world premiere of Owls Do Cry as a festival opening!! This stunning production by Red Leap Theatre leads us into the weekend – then jump on your bike and enjoy the fabulous spring weather for Art on Bikes and the re-opening of the Janet Frame trail.
This year we’re reaching out into the district with an awesome Aunty – check out those dates for the Kurow and Hampden Halls, followed by a little bit of magic in the Oamaru Gardens with a screening of The Greatest Showman.
We hope that there is something for everyone to enjoy – family fun, comedy, literature, multi-dimensional theatre and music. Join us for one or many events and bring your friends… the more the merrier.
A big thank you to our sponsors and festival friends for supporting this event, in particular Whitestone Contracting Ltd for believing in the magic of our Opera House auditorium – a very special place for our community.
A BIG thank you to the Oamaru Opera House team, who continue to give their all in support of this Festival and to the Waitaki District Council – the guardians of our district.

Considered the first great New Zealand novel by celebrated author Janet Frame, Owls Do Cry tells of the Withers siblings, Daphne, Chicks, Toby and Francie, and their lives in small town New Zealand following a family tragedy.
Bringing the characters, imagery and poetry alive through Red Leap Theatre’s trademark physical and visual style, Owls Do Cry reveals Frame’s insight into our society and communities.
This production has been devised through personal connection and identification with her language, as a contemporary response rather than retelling. While a strong reflection of the time at which it was written, Owls Do Cry remains innovative and relevant. The modernist masterpiece, written in Frame’s idiosyncratic and startlingly visual style has the power to unnerve and astonish nearly 60 years after it was first published.

Janet Frame’s oamaru
Tour
Join us on a discovery tour to explore the Oamaru that writer Janet Frame knew in the 1930s and 1940s. You’ll visit some of the iconic places of her childhood and learn about her own incredible life story.
There are two tour options during the Waitaki Arts Festival.
Pick up a free brochure from the Oamaru i-SITE and enjoy a self-guided tour at your leisure.
Book a place on the guided walking tour with Ralph Sherwood, the former curator of Janet Frame’s childhood home at 56 Eden Street. The tour includes admission to Janet Frame’s childhood home at 56 Eden Street (otherwise not open until November) and a light afternoon tea. The guided tour starts at 1pm, rain or shine, and should take about two to two-and-a-half hours. Bring your walking shoes!

Mr Red Light is a man who attracts bad luck. Fleeing the police after a botched bank robbery, he seeks refuge in a pie shop and finds himself in charge of three very uncooperative hostages.
As time ticks by and police negotiations are bungled, Mr Red Light and his captives play a game of getting to know you.
Each has their own troubles. For Joker, employee of the month at the pie shop, life is a party he was never invited to. Dark and defensive Chrys is trapped behind the secretive walls she’s built around her. Eva, a lonely old woman, has lost the love of her life and is staring at her own mortality. And strangely, Mr Red Light seems to know more about his hostages’ lives than is possible.
With nowhere to run and nothing to lose, the four strangers form an unlikely bond. Suddenly the pie shop is a place where anything can happen.

Up and Away is a playful and gentle theatrical performance created exclusively for babies. Two performers interweave elements of theatre, play and live music in a half-hour performance, which culminates in free play and exploration-time for baby audience members.
Up and Away is performed in a cosy, purpose-made tent. Audience numbers are limited to a small group, and only pre-walking babies may attend. This results in a calm, safe atmosphere and optimal conditions for babies to engage in the performance.
Up and Away has been developed in consultation with a speech-language therapist, in accordance with current neuroscientific research.
“…you’d have to be a baby-hating grinch with a lump of coal for a heart not to see that this is a pretty special experience for big and little people alike.” – Theatreview

If you make fine wine, France is the benchmark. Or are they?
One country famous for punching above its weight is taking on the aristocracy. This is a story featuring the World’s most renowned winemakers, critics, writers and fine wine merchants. Travelling from the Old World to the New World we explore the history, culture and tension in the changing world of fine wine, answering that one question - has New Zealand earned a seat at the table?
“Vive la screwcap: How NZ is beating French winemakers at their own game” – Joelle Thompson, Spinoff
“A must see” – Mike Hosking.
“Savour 100 minutes of eye-popping camera work, picturesque vineyards and gratuitous grape-fondling shots in this glorious toast to the talent and the stories behind New Zealand’s world-famous wine industry.” – Yvonne Lorkin
