34 Race Committee

As we embark on the 20th Running of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k, I would like to take the opportunity to look back over the years to see the impact the race has had on the Richmond Community. What started as a race of 2,500 people has grown and inspired over 500,000 people to live an active lifestyle. We have seen spectators and volunteers inspired year after year to move from the sidelines to the racecourse. Today we are the 3rd largest 10k in the country and nationally recognized as a must do event for all runners and walkers, none of which would be possible without the support of the entire Richmond Community.

So thank you for your support over the years, thank

you for spreading our mission of inspiring people to

life actively, and thank you for celebrating with us on

Saturday, April 13th.

We look forward to seeing you at the finish line!

Meghan Keogh

6 sportsbackers.org

Kids Run RVA is an initiative of Sports Backers that motivates thousands of young people across our region to run and be active on a regular basis. Sports Backers is committed to improving the health of our children by encouraging routine physical activity, which is critical to their long-term growth and well-being.

As an official charity of the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k, donations to Kids Run RVA help us to provide free training opportunities for youth of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds as well as funding to support school-based run clubs and events. For schools with fewer resources, Kids Run RVA grants can additionally cover transportation and entry fees to Sports Backers events - like the Virginia529 Kids Run - which serve as celebrations of the students’ discipline and hard work.

We invite each of you to learn more about how you can get involved with Kids Run RVA. Each time a child laces up his or her shoes, you will be giving them the most important gift of all: a path to good health and fitness!

WAVE START INFORMATIONWhat are Waves? It’s pretty simple actually. Instead of one big start with all 25,000 people taking off at once, we divide everyone into almost 40 waves. Each wave is organized by people’s expected pace so that everyone can run with others their own speed. Waves start with the fastest runners, then go to slower runners, then joggers, then walkers. You selected your own wave when you registered.

While lining up on Broad Street, please look for the volunteer holding the wave sign that corresponds to your bib. For example, if the wave listed on your bib number is SB, then you will look for the “SB” sign. Your group will be walked into the starting corral as the start time for your wave approaches. Wave Security will be on hand to make sure that you are lined up with the correct wave.

PLEASE NOTE:

• If you wish to start with someone who is in a different wave, you may do so by starting in the slower person’s wave. In other words, you may drop back to a slower wave, but no one may move up to a faster wave. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED!

• Be sure to pin your bib number to the front of your shirt. You must wear your bib number to be admitted into the starting corral. Your race number also contains your timing device. Please do not bend or fold your bib as this may damage the timing device and prevent you from receiving an accurate time.

• Remember, we have chip timing to record your exact start time, so your results will accurately reflect the time it took you to run the race no matter which corral you start in.

For the first time, the 10K will be a family affair for Brown. “My 17-year-old son ran the 10K last year. We didn’t run together, but it still felt special to have him out there,” Brown said. “He and my 14-year-old daughter are registered, so it’ll be a cool to have them both out there this year.” He’s also hopeful that taking on the Dash for the Cash challenge will bring some added spectator support. “With the spotlight on me this year, I hope to rally my wife, some students, and a few more friends, although some of them will come out to see me get run down by a bunch of elite runners just for the fun of it!” Brown said, before adding, “My nephew’s a VCU student. Maybe I can get him and his buddies to wake up early enough on a Saturday morning to start a cheering section.”

Brown’s training so far has included multiple runs per week, mixed in with swimming and yoga. He is aiming to strike a balance between focusing on the 10k while also preparing for the spring and summer running season. “I never take the run too seriously in terms of a time since it’s so early in the running season. I just try to enjoy the vibe…my number one priority is to be healthy on race day, even if I’m not at my fittest.”

Above all, Brown knows this is a rare opportunity and a unique way to experience the 10k, and he says he’s looking forward to the challenge: “It’s going to be fun.”

Brian P. Brown will Dash for the Cash at Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k presented by Kroger By Pete Woody

Brian P. Brown, a Mechanicsville resident and marketing professor in the VCU School of Business, has been selected for an opportunity to win $2,500 as the Dash for the Cash participant at the 2019 Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k presented by Kroger.

Brown was chosen at random from over 15,000 people who were registered for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k as of the February 1 contest deadline. Based on the predicted time he listed on his race entry form and his past performance in the event, he will be given a roughly two-mile head start on the course and will attempt to cross the finish line before any of the other athletes running in the full 10k (6.2 miles). If he does outrun the rest of the field to the finish line, he will win the $2,500 cash prize. If another runner finishes first, the $2,500 will be donated to the VCU Massey Cancer Center, an official event charity.

Brown first participated in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k in 2012, after moving to Richmond the previous year, and this will be the sixth time he’s taken part. “I’ve enjoyed every one,” Brown said of his 10k race experiences. “The crowd is amazing, I always run into a few friends, the bands jam, and there’s just a lot of energy and enthusiasm.” In addition to the 10k, Brown has taken part in a number of half marathons, including the Markel Richmond Half Marathon, and also enjoys trail running.

Despite his familiarity and experience with the 10k, Brown was still very surprised to hear about his Dash for the Cash opportunity. “At first, I didn’t believe it. I thought it was a contest I had to enter or maybe just a prank or scam!” he said. “I got a little anxious to be honest. Was I going to embarrass myself in front of the Richmond community?! But once I thought about it and talked it over with my family, I got excited.”

Brown also reflected on the role the 10k charity partnership with the VCU Massey Cancer Center played in his decision to take part. “Win or lose, it’s for a great cause,” Brown said. “I lost my sister-in-law, Julie Dickson Brown, to cancer just a couple of years ago. If I can raise money and awareness to help fight that dreaded disease while doing something I enjoy, why not?”

VIRGINIA529 KIDS RUN INFORMATION A half-hour before the 10k participants make their way down Monument Avenue, over 1,000 youngsters will line up for the 17th annual Virginia529 Kids Run. Representing a generation of future runners, children ages 5-12 will complete a one-mile course that starts on Park Ave. and takes them to Lombardy St. to Stuart Circle to Monument Ave and back down Franklin St. where it crosses the same finish line as the 10k. The Virginia529 Kids Run is another example of how the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k is more than just a race—it’s a fun festival event for the whole family that promotes a healthy lifestyle!

STARTING LINE/WAVE STARTSThe starting line for the Virginia529 Kids Run is located on Park Avenue near Harrison Street. Participants will line up in waves based on age (and corresponding to the color of their bib number) and will start as follows:

WAVE BIB COLOR AGES START

1 Purple 10-12 8 a.m.

2 Green 9 8:02 a.m.

3 Green 8 8:04 a.m.

4 Orange 7 8:06 a.m.

5 Orange 5-6 8:08 a.m.

GENERAL INFORMATION• One adult may accompany any child age 8 or under while

they are on the course. PLEASE NOTE: The parent or guardian must sign a waiver while registering the child online or bring a signed copy to packet pick up. At packet pick up, the parent or guardian will receive a special bib that MUST be worn and be visible during the event.

• Kids Run participants will not be timed. There will be a clock at the finish for those interested in noting their own finish time.

• As the finishers enter the finish line chute, they will receive a medal and be reunited with their parents. Then it’s on to the post-race food tent.

• PLEASE no dogs, bikes, or strollers in the start chute, course, or finish area.

KIDS RUN MEETING AREAONE parent will be allowed to enter the finish line area on Franklin Street via Shafer Court in order to meet their child(ren). This will help reunite kids and parents faster as well as keep the exits clear. Once reunited, they will continue to the specified exits. All parents must meet their children in this area after the children finish the race. No child will be allowed to exit without being accompanied by an adult.

Traffic InfoMOTORISTS NOT TRAVELING TO THE RACE ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO USE I-95 AND I-195 AROUND THE CITY. For a list of street closures and traffic pattern changes on race day, please visit our website.

RACE DAY PARKINGWe encourage participants to carpool to the race. Even better, jog or ride your bike to the starting line! Free parking is available on streets throughout the area. We strongly recommend going east of Belvidere to find on-street and surface-lot parking. To lessen the chance of getting stuck in traffic, please avoid the Belvidere exits off I-95 and I-195, and instead go farther east and exit on 3rd Street, Broad Street, or Franklin Street.

Paid parking is available in several parking decks. Arrive early, as these spaces fill quickly, or beat the crowds and pre-purchase your parking spot for $8 (which goes up to $10 on Race Day)! Follow the given directions to avoid street closures.

• HENRY ST. PARKING DECK - WEST (200 N. HENRY ST) Traveling west on Grace Street from downtown, the entrance to the deck will be located on your right at the intersection of Henry St (one block east of Belvidere St).

• 801 W. MAIN STREET (BETWEEN LAUREL & CHERRY ST.)Take I-195 to the Idlewood exit. Make a left turn onto Cherry Street to the entrance to the deck.

• 609 BOWE STREET (NEXT TO THE SIEGEL CENTER)Exit I-95 at the Boulevard and head south (right). Make a left turn onto Leigh St. Travel east to Bowe St and make a right turn (one block east of Lombardy). Go south and the parking deck will be on your left.

• 100 S. JEFFERSON STREET (BETWEEN CARY & CANAL ST.)Traveling east on Cary St, the deck will be located on your right at the intersection of Jefferson St (two blocks east of Belvidere St).

Check www.sportsbackers.org for race day parking and traffic updates.

RACE DAY SHUTTLE SERVICEWINN Transportation will offer two separate shuttle pick-up locations: City Stadium and The Diamond. Anyone wishing to take advantage of the shuttle service on race day MUST purchase a wristband at the Expo during packet pick up hours. Wristbands will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. There are NO shuttle wristbands available for purchase on Race Day. The cost is $5 per person round trip from City Stadium and $8 per person round trip from The Diamond. The shuttle will drop off at Adams and Canal Street.

SHUTTLE BUS NOTES:

• Parking spaces are limited at both locations so carpooling is recommended. A wristband on the shuttle bus does not guarantee you a parking spot in the parking lots at either The Diamond or City Stadium. On-street parking is also available at each location.

• Shuttles will run on a continuous loop between 6:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from each location to the drop off point. To ensure that you have enough time to walk from the drop off point to the start line, please plan to arrive at your shuttle pick up location at least 90 minutes before your wave is scheduled to start. The drop off location is 8 blocks from the 10k start area where waves begin to line up. (View map)

• Each shuttle passenger must have a wristband to board the shuttle at the pick-up locations.

• To expedite the purchase of shuttle wristbands at the expo, cash is recommended, but credit cards are accepted with an additional convenience fee.

TAKE LYFT TO AND FROM THE RACELyft is offering 20% off each ride on race day, up to two rides, for Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k participants! Just use the code RIC10K when requesting your ride.

Lyft will be using a designated drop off and pick-up zone on Main Street between Belvidere and Laurel Street (adjacent to Monroe Park).

We are once again offering a FREE Bike Valet service. Instead of trying to find parking, ride your bike to the event. Bike Valet will be located on Franklin Street

near Pine Street. Bike Valet service will be available from 7:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13th. Participants will be able to check their bike bag.

As coaches for Sports Backers’ Kids Run RVA youth running program, LaShawn Moore and Kisha Holloway get excited for the opportunity to greet their run club members at the finish line of races and share their excitement at completing a goal. But that excitement was nothing compared to the feeling the two experienced when they shared their own emotional greeting last fall at a Kids Run RVA coaches’ meeting, since it was an unexpected and unplanned reunion nearly two decades in the making.

LaShawn and Kisha met in the ninth grade at Hampton High School in Hampton, Virginia, in the early 1990s and quickly became inseparable as best friends. After growing up together, they lost contact when work and family life took them to different cities around the country (LaShawn’s lack of social media presence made it even more difficult to keep in touch). They both relocated to Richmond several years ago, but still, their paths never crossed, despite the fact that they shared the same family dentist. That changed when they walked into a Kids Run RVA coaches’ meeting last fall, which led to a surprise connection that had both shedding tears of joy.

“It felt like a dream when I saw her walk into the coaches meeting,” Kisha said of the moment they saw each other again. “I couldn’t believe that it was really her.”

“It was surreal, that’s the only word I can use to describe it” added LaShawn. “Even though I’ve been a coach for Kids Run RVA for many years, I typically have not gone to that meeting because I’m a single parent and haven’t had a

sitter but this year I was determined to go. When I saw her…I just couldn’t believe this was my best friend right there, in my arms.”

Running has always been an important part of LaShawn and Kisha’s relationship, as they were both members of the Hampton High track team. Now as Kids Run RVA coaches, they aim to share their passion for active living with the kids they coach as they’ve prepared for the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k and Virginia529 Kids Run on April 13. Kisha is also a member of Sports Backers’ Fitness Warriors program, and for both coaches, helping kids with setting and achieving goals and instilling a lifelong love of running are their main targets.

“In my first year, I found that the children really get a sense of pride out of participating,” said LaShawn, who teaches and coaches at E.D. Redd Elementary School in Richmond. “As much as I can, I’m going to provide that for them. That’s why I do it.”

“I found that the kids I work with had never really run before, outside

of just normal playing,” added Kisha, who works with students who attend homeschool, a new aspect of the Kids Run RVA program. “They’re so excited, their self-esteem is up, and the parents love it. We’re really having a good time.”

With the 10k rapidly approaching, both coaches say the excitement of race day is something all the kids are looking forward to. “I always run the 10k myself, so I’m used to the energy from the people” on the course, Kisha said. “I can’t wait for the kids to feel it…and get across that finish line.” “It’s so exciting for them,” added LaShawn. “You’d be amazed to see what you can do with that energy.”

With a boost from their unexpected reunion, LaShawn and Kisha are thankful that Kids Run RVA has brought them back together and reconnected their families, and they’ll use that as inspiration. “I feel like it was fate…it was the perfect moment,” Kisha said, with LaShawn adding, “I feel so blessed that it happened.”
