NUNM Press publishes distinctive titles that enrich the history, clinical practice, and contemporary significance of natural medicine traditions. We are committed to producing literature that speaks to the invaluable goal of protecting the health of our planet. This mission is as much about the plants, animals and all living organisms that share our biosphere and provide our sustenance as it is about the well-being of people.

NUNM Press is an emerging voice and channel for those who want to know more and share more about health, and who believe in informed choice. NUNM Press aspires to be the most reliable source of medical literature, scholarship and research related to natural medicine and holistic health systems in North America and beyond.

The Press began in 1994 with the publication of Nature Doctors, a review of the European nature cure movement and the great representatives of naturopathy. The exciting study of the giants of the early naturopathic movement continued when NUNM Press launched the Hevert Collection in 2013, a 12-volume series that reintroduces into contemporary naturopathic theory and practice the foundational literature of a century ago, “In Their Own Words.”

The goals of NUNM Press:

a. To capture the repository of knowledge and experience of our university’s thousands of alumni—naturopathic physicians, Chinese medicine practitioners, scholars, educators, natural medicine researchers, nutritionists, global health experts and more. In a world where chronic disease is rampant, people yearn to mitigate the dangers of a medical system indentured to polypharma and reductionist approaches to health.

b. To enhance applied, translational, engaged, community-based, contract, and government-sponsored research through Helfgott Research Institute and its partners with the intention of being a platform for clinicians and educators and researchers; and being the catalyst for sharing the best, forward-looking thinking on natural medicine, holistic practice, and environmental responsibility.

c. To encourage and model scholarship for natural medicine faculty, students and alumni/ae.

Check out the powerful titles of NUNM Press. Our reputation for being the go-to source for knowledge about the remarkable universe of natural medicine resonates throughout. A whole new way of seeing the world of health is just inside those pages.

In health,

David J. Schleich, PhD President, National University of Natural Medicine

Origins of Naturopathic Medicine (2013)$27.95A historical overview drawn from the Benedict Lust journals published between 1900-1923. These classic articles, meticulously researched and selected, frame the key clinical and professional issues that have affected naturopathic doctors to this day.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine (2014) $27.95The six contemporary naturopathic principles began as 12 in 1902. This book helps contemporary naturopaths understand how their principles transformed over time. Understanding the roots and evolution of the naturopathic principles is critical to ensure the success and unique character of naturopathic medical practice.

Philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine (2013) $27.95In choosing the philosophy of naturopathic medicine, the naturopath recognizes that nature is inherently wise— and that abiding by its laws, we can reinforce and sustain physical and mental health. The naturopathic movement was founded by pioneer Benedict Lust and led by him through 50 years of publishing advocacy and patient care.

The Hevert COLLECTION

The Hevert Collection includes 12 volumes that bring the very best literature from the remarkable Lust journals of the early 20th century to contemporary naturopathic doctors. The collection is edited by NUNM Rare Book Room Curator, Sussanna Czeranko, ND, BBE.

Dietetics of Naturopathic Medicine (2014)$27.95What we choose to eat is arguably the most important factor in producing and sustaining health. Diet was a cornerstone for the early naturopaths as they charted a course for health reform. This volume is a review of the writings of these early naturopaths who scrupulously examined and documented the role of diet and food. As important today as when these pioneers first brought forward their discoveries into clinical practice, their dietetic knowledge is a precious resource for the modern naturopath.

Practice of Naturopathic Medicine (2015)$27.95Discover the very best of naturopathic pioneers’ clinical practices. This book explores their modalities and methodologies used to guide patients to renewed and sustainable health, ranging from heliotherapy, Nauheim baths, bloodless and orthopedic surgery, earth cure, water cure, botanical medicine and dietetics.

Vaccination and Naturopathic Medicine (2015)$27.95The topic of vaccination is fraught with intrigue and complexities. Since vaccinations' first appearance in Western medicine, the controversy between those warning of its dangers and those espousing its utility has endured. Perhaps no professional body has been more consistent in articulating its concerns than the naturopaths of the early 20th century. Indeed, the issue of vaccination safety and efficacy has a special place in the history of naturopathy not only because of the strong energies, convictions and polarities it conjures, but also because the very issue galvanized the early naturopaths and helped shape the profession.

Physical Culture in Naturopathic Medicine (2016)$27.95Early 20th century naturopathic doctors recognized the “Physical Culture” movement, championed by Bernarr Macfadden, as a powerful tool for promoting health. Its goal was to mobilize people to get active to get healthy. Naturopaths and physical culturalists alike eschewed sedentary lifestyles and the oppression of women, instead encouraging liberating knowledge about women’s and men’s health, sunshine, fresh air, wholesome food, connection to the earth and hydrotherapy. The Physical Culture movement is still with us. Some different terminology; the same powerful, effective principles.

Herbs in Naturopathic Medicine (2016)$27.95We can trace the central role of herbal medicine in North American naturopathic practice back to Benedict Lust, who introduced the rich legacy and tools of Father Kneipp to his American colleagues more than a century ago. Their apothecaries consisted of common, every day herbs, yet, their applications and use are surprisingly more comprehensive and daring than we can imagine. Herbs in Naturopathic Medicine pulls back this historical curtain and invites us to peek into the naturopathic herbal armamentarium of the very early 20th century.

Clinical Pearls in Naturopathic Medicine, Vol. I: Acute Diseases (2019)$27.95This first volume of Clinical Pearls presents a substantial range of successful case histories, therapies, theory and practice related to acute presentations well known by the early 20th century naturopaths. The confidence and depth of the voices here are compelling.

Mental Culture in Naturopathic Medicine (2017)$27.95Become reacquainted with the prescient voices of those who wrote about mind-body medicine at the very inception of naturopathy. The resounding teaching in this book is that the body and mind are one, and more importantly, that the mind and the spirit absolutely matter in overall health.

Clinical Pearls in Naturopathic Medicine, Vol. II: Chronic Disease (2019)$27.95

The final volume of the Hevert Collection assembles a remarkable array of cases, therapeutic tools and healing approaches for chronic disease as practiced by naturopaths in the early 20th century—just as naturopathic medicine took root in North America, predicated on its European and global roots. The protocols found in this book have immense value for naturopaths practicing today.

The Fortunate Few (2015) Thierry Sagnier$24.95

This is above all, a tribute to the dedication of the men and women who volunteered their time and skills to improve the lives of millions through the International Voluntary Services (IVS). Here, nearly 100 of these volunteers speak about their service years and the impact their work had on their futures and the people they served.

The effectiveness of IVS volunteers subsequently led to the creation of a number of other international volunteer agencies, including the Peace Corps.

Cultivating Agribusiness (2015) Mike Chilton and Bob Griffin$16.95

Mike Chilton built a $1.6 million agribusiness in only 12 years by engaging small business potential in specialty agriculture products, including seeds, plant-sourced oils, and plant material products. He recounts his success in the Pacific Northwest, along with his desire to share and help others engage successful opportunities in agriculture. His fascinating story is a valuable resource for farmers, extension agents, future farmers, agriculture and ecology educators, and agribusiness entrepreneurs.

Food as Medicine Everyday (2015)Julie Briley, ND, and Courtney Jackson, ND $29.95

“Food as medicine” has been a powerful approach to health and healing, intimately woven into naturopathic medical education for over a century. This book is highly accessible, exquisitely researched, and beautifully written and illustrated. Dr. Jackson and Dr. Briley explain that poor dietary choices are a major element in the expanding issues related to chronic disease. They also remind us that food is medicine, and a big part of the solution. A rapidly growing number of people determined to improve their health can take heart—medicine never tasted better!

Contemporary TitlesNature Doctors (2005, 2nd edition)Friedhelm Kirchfeld and Wade Boyle$24.95

Modern naturopathic medicine can look back on a proud tradition that has its roots in the European nature cure movement of the 19th century. This absorbing history of the movement honors the pioneers who called for a return to nature and her remedies: water, air, light, a vegetarian diet, fasting and herbs. They offered a true alternative to the drugging abuses, heroic bloodletting procedures, and the therapeutic nihilism prevailing at that time.

Sunsets, Bulldozers, and Elephants: Twelve Years in Laos, The Stories I Never Told (2004)Howard Lewin$24.95

Howard Lewin’s extensive memoir about the dozen years he spent in service during the period 1963–1975 with the International Voluntary Services (IVS) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It is a companion volume to the NUNM Press title, The Fortune Few. Against the background of the IVS’ model of international aid, Lewin’s detailed narrative is a valuable, inspiring inside look at one corner of the politically complex history of American development efforts in Southeast Asia.Available for distribution by NUNM Press by special arrangement with the author.
