In preparing this report, 2019 seems a lifetime ago. While it has only been a few months since we completed the year, so much has changed in PEI, Canada and the world. While we know we have a lot of challenges ahead, we want to take a moment and reflect on the year that was 2019. Throughout 2019, the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce continued to provide programs, services and be the voice of business. 2019 saw both a provincial and federal election where the Chamber was actively involved. We worked during each elec-tion to be your voice and successfully advocated for several items. Through the Chamber’s advocacy, the newly elected provincial government lowered the small business tax to 3% and com-mitted to reaching a rate of 1% by the end of their mandate. We also influenced the increase to PEI’s Basic Personal Amount, how minimum wage adjustments are handled, and solutions to workforce challenges. Through the provincial election and beyond, the Chamber continued a lead role with the Partnership for Growth – an alli-ance of 21 business organizations and industry associations called for the new government to work with the private sector to develop an economic action plan for PEI. We were pleased in the first budget of the newly formed government that funding was provided for this project, and work on it began shortly after. At the municipal level we lobbied for more accountability and transparency in the setting of water and sewer rates by the Charlottetown utility. We continue to hold those elected at all levels accountable for commitments made to the business community. We also continued to assist new graduates and newcomers through the PEI Network and PEI Connectors programs. Members showed strong support for the over 40 events we hosted. Notably, the new Small Business Week agenda that included a mega mixer at Founders Food Hall and keynote address by Dragon’s Den star Arlene Dickinson. It has been a privilege to serve over the past year. The Chamber has been a pillar of business for over 135 years. As we navigate the unsteady and unpredictable waters of 2020, please know we are here for you. Like each of you, we will fight, pivot and do what is needed to have a strong business community in 2020 and beyond.
