Executive Director’s ReportOpen Door Ministries of High Point is uniquely positioned to provide assistance to people in our community with a variety of issues and challenges. Our programs and services offer a mixture of being able to meet immediate needs, while offering our clients the opportunity to overcome barriers and problems.

Our Homeless Shelter offers emergency housing for homeless men, as well as case management and other assistance to address mental health issues, substance abuse addictions, medical problems, educational/employment needs and housing placement.

The Arthur Cassell Transitional House serves homeless veterans through our residential program. A full range of supportive services are provided to the veterans to assist them in transitioning back to independent living in our community.

The Rapid Re-Housing program assists homeless individuals and families from our community. The program is designed to help each of our clients to locate and obtain housing suitable to their needs. We provide financial assistance and case management services to guide them towards housing stability.

The Permanent Supportive Housing works with chronically homeless individuals, with mental health and substance abuse issues. The program provides intensive case management services to help our clients learn independent living skills and to maintain their home.

In an effort to assist the immediate, basic needs of people in our community, we assist those in need through our Emergency Assistance Program, and served meals at the Father’s Table. Both of these programs assist individuals and families in crisis situations.

Every time that we help someone who comes to us for assistance, it is a humbling experience to realize the importance of an organization like Open Door Ministries. We are working with people who have real and difficult problems, and very little options. So, our ability to provide assistance is extremely important.

I am very grateful to the community for the generous support that we receive. It is very much appreciated by our staff, Board of Directors, and the people who receive assistance.

Board Chairman’s ReportAfter several years as a Board Member, my eyes have been opened that much wider this past year as I have been honored to serve as the Open Door Board Chair.

While the clients that take advantage of our services have continued to expand, our need for funding has also increased. Many of our needs are for the “physical plant” that makes up the various Open Door facilities, whether that be the main campus on Centennial, the Arthur Cassell house or the furnishings needed in our Rapid Rehousing and Permanent Supportive Housing programs.

I’m deeply indebted to our Board and Advisory Board for their support, their counsel and a willingness to be involved as a true “working group”. It is through these individuals and a host of other volunteers that we are able to do the good work of Open Door Ministries. Nearly all of our local churches, students from our high schools, High Point University and various businesses are steadfast in making themselves available to contribute to this ministry. Indeed a big shout out to our Open Door staff !! They make it happen every single day…..

Thank you to all who joined us for our many fundraising events this past year: Harvest Fest, Feast of Caring, Crop Hunger Walk and the PTI Run on the Runway. We hope you will plan to attend these again in the coming months.

The seeds of what we now call Open Door Ministries were planted more than 30 years ago by a local group of concerned citizens and churches. Over these past years, we’ve served countless individuals, created and maintained an ever growing list of services and expanded our fundraising to foundations and other organizations that are not even in the High Point area. That’s how important the work of Open Door Ministries is perceived in the larger community of those caring for the least of God’s children.

One constant through all 30 years of Open Door has been our Executive Director, Steve Key. To a very great extent, the Open Door that we celebrate and cherish today has been built through the wonderful compassion, patience, nurturing and dedication that Steve has so steadfastly contributed as the ONLY director we’ve ever had. We are so deeply grateful for his many contributions and wish him well as he moves on to the next chapter of his service to our community.

As you look through this Annual Report, you can see the many ways that Open Door makes a difference. What you can’t see is the hope and compassion that flows from all of our staff and volunteers that serve. Our needs are great, both in terms of dollars and volunteers. I hope that you will prayerfully consider helping Open Door continue its mission of being God’s hands at work in our community. I thank you for your support !!

Open Door Ministries EventsAnnual Luncheon

High Point Country Club

Our Annual Luncheon is a time of celebration, highlighting our work

and ministry over the course of the prior year. It is an opportunity for us to share some of the personal

stories of our clients and the impact Open Door is having on their lives.

Crop Hunger WalkHigh Point Rockers Stadium

For over 30 years, churches, families and friends have gathered to raise awareness and money for local and world hunger. The three- mile walk symbolizes how far someone might walk to obtain water in a third world country.

William Mangum Honor Cards

The William Mangum Honor Card is a special way to honor a friend or loved one during the holiday season while also supporting Open Door Ministries. Each year the painting on the card is different, reflecting a theme of hope for the homeless. These are sold at businesses and churches throughout High Point.

Feast of CaringFirst Presbyterian Church, High Point

The Feast of Caring is a fun, delicious way to support Open Door Ministries. Homemade soups, breads, desserts, and live entertainment by the Major Sevens Band make this one of our most popular events. We also sell a wide variety of pottery donated by local potters.

Our annual events are key to our fundraising efforts, but also a great chance for us to get to know our community supporters.

Each December the community gathers to remember those in the homeless community who died that year. A candle is lit to honor their life. This also gives the homeless a chance to enjoy a nice holiday meal, served by volunteers who support our mission.

Ilderton’s Harvest FestHigh Point Public Library Plaza

2018 was the first year for Ilderton’s Harvest Fest held at the High Point

Public Library Plaza, and it was a great success! Kicking off the fall

season, this fun outdoor event features the Mighty Fairlanes, food trucks, beer and wine, vendors and

artists, and a children’s area.

PTI Run on the Runway

Held each year at the Piedmont Triad International Airport, the PTI Run is a unique event drawing elite runners and families with strollers to support Second Harvest Food Bank, Greensboro Urban Ministry, and Open Door Ministries.

Spotlight on Our Clients

Men’s Homeless Shelter

Brandon Smith arrived at Open Door Ministries in August of 2019, after being in prison for several years. Brandon wanted to get back on his feet and take care of his children from a previous relationship. He is skilled in maintenance and general contracting work. Legal barriers prevented him from finding gainful employment, but he was motivated and didn’t let the rejections keep him from trying. Brandon successfully obtained employment in October of 2019, and then was able to locate affordable housing. Open Door Ministries assisted with the security deposit for his apartment, and he moved out of the shelter in November of 2019. Brandon occasionally returns to Open Door Ministries to stop in and say hello, but has also volunteered his time and expertise to assist Open Door Ministries with light maintenance needs. Brandon remains in his housing to this date and is grateful that Open Door Ministries was there to assist him in his time of need.

Rapid ReHousing Program

Tiffany Herbin was moving right along in life until a tragedy hit. Her home caught fire, leaving her and her family without a place to live. She quickly moved in with family and friends but that did not

last long. She was pregnant and had no place to call home or to get assistance. She finally was able to get into Room at the Inn, a shelter for pregnant women. This was Ms. Herbin’s saving grace. A few months later, she was referred to Open Door Ministries of High Point’s Rapid Rehousing program. She received case management assistance and help in moving into a new home. Shortly after that, Ms. Herbin was able to locate a full-time job with Family Dollar Store, which allowed her to care for her family once again. Over the past several months, we are proud that Ms. Herbin has been able to accomplish the goals that she set for herself. She has worked very hard, and we are happy that she is finally able to support herself and her family. Congratulations!
