LARRY STUDEBAKER MEMORIAL/MIAMI SWCD SCHOLARSHIP
The Miami Soil and Water Conservation District is offering two $750 scholarship awards for the purpose of continuing higher education at a two or four year college or university. QUALIFICATIONS – Applying students:• Must be a Miami County, Ohio resident.• Must be an Agriculture or Natural Resources major.• Must be enrolled for Fall Quarter/Semester of 2019.• MAY be a prior Miami SWCD scholarship recipient.• May only receive twice CONDITIONS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP – The award will be used towards the student’s tuition and fees and will be processed through the scholarship offi ce of the chosen school. WHERE AND HOW TO APPLY – Send completed applications, along with high school or college transcripts and three (3) letters of recommendations from three (3) references listed on the application form to: Miami SWCD Scholarship Committee, 1330 North County Road 25A; Suite C, Troy, Ohio 45373. 2019 LOCAL AGRICULTURAL EASEMENT PURCHASE PROGRAM (LAEPP) MIAMI
SWCD APPLICATION DEADLINE - FEBRUARY 15
Now through February 15th, 2019, the Miami SWCD will accept applications from Ohio landowners interested in selling an agricultural easement on their farms through the Ohio Department of Agriculture Local Agricultural Easement Purchase Program (LAEPP), made possible from allocations from the Clean Ohio Fund. The easement requires the:• Farm remain permanently in agriculture production• Farm must be 40 acres or more• Participation in the Current Agricultural Use Valuation program• Owners demonstrate good stewardship of the land• Support of their local government• Land not lay directly in the path of development. Landowners may use the proceeds of the easement in any way they wish, but most reinvest it in their farm operations. Funding for the program is derived from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund, approved by voters in 2008. When combined with easements from all programs, 449 family farms in 59 counties have collectively preserved more than 73,500 acres in agricultural production. OHIO’S “SNOWBIRD”SUBMITTED BY RENEE BUCK,
PHEASANTS FOREVER FARM BILL BIOLOGIST Unbeknownst to many people, there’s a cute little songbird in the Sparrow family, that fl ies south in the winter, but not to some tropical location like many of its feathered friends, but to Ohio. These little two-tone charcoal or brown and white birds are called Dark-eyed Juncos, and if you watch closely in the fall, once winter has fallen in the North, they suddenly appear in backyards everywhere; sometimes in large fl ocks. This is why they are called Snowbirds. They can be used as a natural signal that ‘Winter is Coming’. They also disappear just as quickly as they came in the spring. Once it starts to warm, all of a sudden, they are all gone, back to their breeding grounds in the North. During the breeding season, they nest on or near the ground in coniferous and deciduous forests across Canada and the northern parts of the US, with some populations staying year-round in the Rockies and the Appalachian mountains. They usually lay 3-6 eggs and could rear 1-3 broods during the summer. They feed primarily on insects and other invertebrates during the nesting season for the increased proteins. Once they head south to escape the rougher winters of the north, they switch to a seed diet, and happily will visit any bird feeder in your backyard! They will also enjoy the wildfl ower seeds that have been left standing to fall to the ground, where they forage in the leaf litter. During their vacation in Ohio, they tend to enjoy more open, human inhabited areas. They readily congregate in suburban parks and backyards, farms, and homesteads. Take a look and keep your eyes out for our little winter visitor and watch them hop about foraging for seeds throughout the winter wonderland.
