BF600 MEMBERS HANDBOOK 2019

Background Information

Founded in 2002 by a number of Leewood Autograss members, the F600 class is in essence an introductory specials class run to class 8 specifications with further restrictions imposed. This is an attempt to reduce cost and increase the quantity of specials racing at club level. The F600 class and championship will be governed by the elected F600 Committee in the immediate future. The overall aim of the committee is to raise the profile of the class by providing cheap, close, fast racing and all members who sign up to the BF600C are expected to follow this objective. Currently F600’s do not have a separate class represented at the Nationals but a separate class is provided within the British Autograss Series and the UK Autograss Championship. We therefore have an extended calendar of events due to demand from competitors and growing interest from clubs with the introduction from 2015 of a ‘Nationals’ style competition; one meeting with a champion at the end of it. Since 2010 BF600C has taken place over 8 rounds with the feature of being able to drop 2 of the lowest points scoring meetings. This accommodates for accidents, mechanical failures, holidays, work and not wishing to travel to certain meetings without putting yourself out of the running for the title. All competitors in the BF600C must declare the driver(s) for the car at the start of the season; one driver and one reserve driver per car is allowed. Thanks to our sponsors, competitors wishing to compete in the championship do not have to pay a registration fee or fill in any application forms although some details do need to be provided at the beginning of the season to enable the Points Coordinator to keep accurate records.

Rules & Regulations - as per NASA Class 8 Rule Book with Additional Restrictions

CHASSIS CONSTRUCTION - see Fig 3

1. Minimum wheelbase of 76”, maximum is F600 specific and a track restriction of 2.0m as per NASA specials rulebook rule 8.1

2. Engine must be mounted in rear of the car and in front of the rear axle in a predetermined horizontal plane.

3. The uppermost part of the engine cylinder head below the rocker cover gasket should be no more than 565mm above the top of the bottom near side chassis rail - see Fig: 1

4. The centre-line of the engine (deemed to be between ports 2 & 3) must be located within 2” (50mm) of the centre-line of the vehicle allowing a slight engine offset.

5. Engine transmission by chain direct from engine gearbox to axle sprocket. From 2017 the use of a cog driven drive box is allowed. The rear axle and sprocket / drive cog centre line must lie within 2” (50mm) of an imaginary line drawn through the centre of both rear wheel hub centres which eliminates the use of engine / drive as ballast and ensures drive shafts run at a very low offset angle. Chain must be of a minimum 520 pitch.

6. No LSD’s or secondary gearboxes allowed. Single tensioners are permitted.

7. Shock absorber specification permitted as follows: Single adjustment on unit controlling both bump and rebound No remote canisters Spring platform adjustment (springing free) Manufactured by Avo, Gaz, Protech, Shock Tec or Spax only

Page 4: 2019 MEMBERS HANDBOOK - WordPress.comFounded in 2002 by a number of Leewood Autograss members, the F600 class is in essence an introductory specials class run to class 8 specifications

Any further manufacturers of shock absorbers submitted for approval to the F600 committee would be considered for inclusion in the following season

8. Any shock absorber that does not have a single body, single ram / piston or has been adapted from an item that has more than one adjuster for the bump and / or rebound or body type and is not currently available for sale to the general public at the time this rule book was released is not permitted and must be submitted to the F600 committee for approval before use at any NASA authorised event.

9. Chassis / vehicle to be equal about vehicle centre line [no offset wheels] +/- 25mm.

10. Engine not to be used as an integral stress member of the chassis.

11. Radiator, fuel tank and battery to be mounted rearward of the roll cage rear hoop, in front of centre of rear axle and within the silhouette of the vehicle. The battery may also be mounted within the driver’s compartment as per NASA ruling 22.

12. In addition to the rear facing brake light a second brake light to NASA specifications must be fitted to the right side / offside of the vehicle and facing the infield in such a way as to be visible by the infield Marshalls whilst racing.

ENGINE

With respect to classification 4.2.1 of NASA rulebook for classes 8, 9 & 10 for the purposes of Formula 600 the following shall apply:

13. Engine to be an unmodified production 4 cylinder, 4-stroke 16 valve up to 600cc motorcycle derived carburettor or injection engine other than 0.5mm overbore and/or 0.5mm head skim (for rebuild or reconditioning requirements only). No further modifications, additions, omissions or alterations are permitted other than localised modifications to connect accelerator and choke cables eg. Yamaha R6, Kawasaki ZX6RF & ZX6RG, Honda CBR600F, Suzuki GSXR600 etc. Alterations to the sump or the addition of any sump baffle or oil pickup pipe or change of position is not allowed.

14. To discourage the use of modified oil pickup pipes the engine must be installed in the car so as to be horizontal +/- 5 degrees when measured with respect to the ground or track surface and the sump pan gasket – see Fig: 2

If you are unsure as to the eligibility of your preferred engine please ask a member of the F600 committee before you start building

17. Carburettor is to be as per manufacturer with the make and model applicable to the engine, jetting and filters free. Flat slides not allowed.

18. Modifications to the injectors, throttle bodies, fuel control/delivery systems including ECU’s and the manufacturers’ standard map are not allowed. Drilled holes for the provision of sealing the ECU to its associated connectors must be provided by the competitor. The introduction of non-standard items into the fuel system or ignition system is strictly prohibited, however fuel pumps are free.

19. The ECU must be the correct version for the engine you are using; the interchanging of ECU’s between models is forbidden.

20. Any ECU must be from the appropriate year and model of engine used and cannot be interchanged between models, for example you must state which engine you have and the appropriate ECU, throttle bodies and exhaust headers must be determined for that model. No BHP advantage is to be gained as a result of flashing or modification although it is permitted to have the ECU flashed

but only to remove the proximity key sensing feature and enable operation of the ignition system without the key being present.

21. No engine components or ancillaries are to be modified from manufacturers’ original specification. No additional after-market components to be fitted into the ignition system and/or ECU. The ignition system must operate as per original manufacturers’ intentions. Throttle position sensors and or potentiometers must be retained and function as per original manufacturers intention.

22. It is not permitted to adjust ignition timing, cam / valve timing, ECU map or injector timing beyond the standard serviceable limits / settings stated by the original engine manufacturers tolerances / standards and recommended in the relevant workshop manual for that make and model.

23. Cooling system modifications other than radiators and fans are strictly prohibited.

24. The removal, alteration, addition or modification of engine ancillaries such as water pumps, alternators, charging systems and their internal mechanisms is strictly prohibited.

25. Gearbox is to remain as standard. Local slight modification is allowed to facilitate chain clearance and prevention of gearbox casing damage in the event that the chain breaks or is thrown off the sprocket. It is not permitted to remove or modify water pumps.

26. Engines will be sealed as and when deemed necessary by the F600 committee / scrutineers. Competitors must ensure that relevant holes are drilled to facilitate engine sealing ie. two bolts from the timing cover to be drilled and two bolts from the cam cover to be drilled or tags with holes to be welded onto them.

27. If after basic inspection checks any engine is suspected of being illegal the owner will be asked to present the car in full running order at Daytuner for a rolling road test.

28. If the engine is still deemed to be non-standard a disciplinary hearing will be scheduled where a decision to strip the engine will be made to confirm its legality.

29. If the engine is found to be illegal the owner will be liable for any carriage and labour costs incurred. If no abnormities are found, the engine will be returned to its owner as per Nationals ruling.

30. Exhaust is to remain as standard in size, configuration and position as produced by engine manufacturer from exhaust port to collectors. No modifications allowed before the point where the exhaust exits as a single pipe. Silencer is free.

31. Wheel and tyre size is free and bead locks are allowed.

GETTING STARTED

The first thing you will need to get started once you have this rulebook is a car. There are several options open to those wishing to build an F600.

Firstly, probably the cheapest option is to modify an existing class 8 chassis. The pre-drive box cars are easiest to adapt due to the similarities in the layout of the engine in relation to the rear axle. Cars frequently trade hands from upwards of £500.

The second option is to buy a chassis from one of the several reputable chassis manufacturers around the country. Berrisford Chassis & Components, ARD, DRD, AP Engineering, Bowen Motorsport or several other manufacturers will be able to fabricate a chassis that will adhere to the rules and regulations previously mentioned. Thirdly, you could build your own chassis. Many of the competitors will be more than happy to give you any advice you need.

Convert an existing chassis? Buy a chassis? Build Your Own?

RACE-DAY, SCRUTINEERING & SIGNING-ON

Competitors are to pass through scrutineering as normal. General Scrutineering will be performed by the host club. This scrutineering will be exactly as before with the usual safety checks: (brake test – brake light – isolator checks – seatbelts).

Once through scrutineering, park up in the pits and a BF600C scrutineer will be across to check that the car conforms to the F600 rules & regulations. Certain aspects of the rules and regulations will be checked at each meeting, with specific checks on other items performed at random.

Again, please be patient with the scrutineers; they are only there to ensure that everyone is competing on level terms.

When signing-on, please state to the official that you are racing “Formula 600”. They will have a specific signing-on sheet for the class. Do not sign on as a class 8.

Grid positions for all heats and finals will be drawn at random. This eliminates the possibility of competitors “picking” their heats. In extreme adverse weather conditions a ‘majority’ decision from the drivers present at the time will determine whether or not to race if the meeting is not cancelled by the host club. This applies to conditions where it is impossible to read car numbers or differentiate one car from another and not just bad weather. A reserve date is available but care will be taken to ensure cancellation only happens in extreme circumstances. Jump starts are already covered by the NASA rule book therefore F600 will abide by that ruling and the ruling of the club marshals of where we are racing. Time given for repair is also in the NASA rules at 15 minutes and is governed by the officials of the club where we are racing. Note this is 15 minutes from starting repairs which makes allowance for time stuck on the track or in the ambulance. QUALIFICATION FOR THE FINALS

On race day the top 8 points scoring competitors from the heats will be eligible for the main A’ final.

If there is a tie for the final position then a run off will be held

Failing this, the drivers will be asked to draw randomly for the final place

If one of the finalists cannot make the race then the next highest scoring competitor will be eligible to take the place

Failing this, the drivers will be asked to draw randomly for the final place FURTHER NOTES ON POINTS SCORING

Only cars completing the race will be awarded points

Race positions will be as reported by the host club’s lap-scorers

An update of the BF600C points will be available as soon as possible after racing on BF600 Facebook page

For two-day meetings where three heats are run, qualification for the finals will be decided by points across the three heats, however, only your top two heats will count towards the BF600C

Page 9: 2019 MEMBERS HANDBOOK - WordPress.comFounded in 2002 by a number of Leewood Autograss members, the F600 class is in essence an introductory specials class run to class 8 specifications

DROPPED MEETINGS

Currently eight meetings are planned with only your top six points scoring meetings counting towards the BF600C. If a competitor is disqualified from a meeting for whatever reason any points accrued at that meeting cannot be drawn upon to count as one of their scores or drop scores over the series. This means that in an 8 round season they will only have 7 rounds from which to draw their top 5; it will always be one less than every other competitor to discourage ‘cheating’.

If all 8 meetings run two meetings are dropped top 6 results count

If only 7 meetings run one meeting is dropped top 6 results count

If only 6 meetings run one meeting is dropped top 5 results count

If less than 6 meetings run no meetings are dropped all results count

PENALTIES & DISCIPLINARY ACTION

As previously mentioned, the spirit of the F600 class is to create close, cheap racing by utilising budget components and unmodified engines.

Such regulations are open to abuse if not policed correctly and therefore strict, thorough scrutineering is required of each of the competing F600’s in order to ensure that the regulations mentioned in the “Rules & Regulations” section are adhered to.

Competitors who are found to be attempting to obtain a performance advantage through consciously breaking the rules will be found and will be brought before the committee for disciplinary action.

Ignorance is not an excuse. If you buy an engine, ensure it is standard, if you buy a chassis, please ensure it conforms to the regulations before you turn up.

Please be advised that if you are buying a tagged chassis you must contact the NASA tagging e-mail address ([email protected]) to ensure that the tag number is re-registered to yourself as we need everyone to help keep the database up to date. All tags will be checked during the course of the season and if yours isn’t the right one for your car again you may be facing disciplinary action.

The committee running the F600 class and the BF600C are educated in all aspects of chassis design and engine modification and will pick up anyone who is cheating. ECU’s, Carburettors, Exhaust Primaries, etc can be easily checked, and will be.

If you suspect anyone is cheating then please inform the committee who can then perform the relevant checks. Your confidentiality is assured. Such threats may sound harsh, but it is essential that the class is policed correctly to ensure the aims of the class are seen to be met.

TROPHY ALLOCATIONS & PRESENTATION

Trophies will be awarded at each BF600C round by the host club. These should go down to at least third place for the A final only. The winner of the BF600C will receive the annual BF600C trophy which will be engraved with the winners name and formally presented. This trophy is to be returned each year so that it may be presented to subsequent winners. The first four competitors in the Championship will receive large trophies which they can keep. These trophies will normally be presented at the Presentation Evening / Dinner Dance of the club of the winning driver.
