CLOTHING AND TEXTILE CONTESTS

Do you like fashion and being creative? The 4-H clothing and Textiles project is perfect for you. In the 4-H clothing and Textiles Project you can learn how to sew, how to be a good consumer when purchasing clothes, and the art of designing clothes and accessories, and careers in the fashion industry.

Here are some of the different projects you can participate in.

Fashion Show—The Fashion Show is designed for 4-H members to showcase their skills in buying and construction.

Fashion Storyboard—The 4-H Fashion Storyboard is an industry-inspired method of displaying original designs. The storyboard “tells the story” of the designer’s idea.

Natural Fiber Contest—The Natural Fiber contest is part of the Fashion Show. Members choose to buy or construct an outfit made from either cotton or wool/mohair/alpaca.

Duds to Dazzle—During Duds to Dazzle, teams of 3 to 5 receive textiles and each team has 60 minutes to create a new product using items from the supply closet.

“Trashion” Show—In the Trashion Show, intermediate and senior 4-H members use their design skills to create and exhibit a recycled/reused garment created from items that would otherwise be thrown in the trash. Teams of 3 to 5 member submit a video application in the spring to be judged.

Alpaca Wool Challenge—4-H participants of any age can request skein of yarn provided by Alpaca producers to create a knitted, crocheted, or woven clothing or textile item.

Quilt Challenge and Community Service Project—This contest has two options for how to participate. Students can create a blanket or quilt of any kind that will be donated to an individual in need or a charity. These items are not judged. Or member can create quilts to be judged. After judging, quilts will be donated to an organization of the quilters choice, Project Linus or Quilts of Valor.

For more information on any of these go to http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/clothing-textiles/ or call the Extension office.

The County Fashion Show and Fashion Storyboard contest will be March 21st during the County Roundup. The District Fashion Show and Fashion Storyboard contest will be May 3rd during the District Spring Roundup.

4-H Recordbooks Keeping records is a great way to hold on to your memories about your incredible adventures in 4-H. Record keeping is also a great way to develop skills in time management, communication, setting goals and deadlines, money management and project evaluations. In an effort to update the current record book system a committee has developed an online program with a data entry system that easily allows for updates, editing and printing.

There will be three (3) levels of record books based on 4-H age (junior, intermediate, and senior). Information requested for each level will

progressively add on to each other. The junior & intermediate books are significantly simplified from past record books. The senior level book is similar to the past record book with some minor edits.

Parts of the report form will be standardized to allow for ease of completion and judging.

Much of the data from previous record books that a member may have saved on their home computer may be “cut and pasted” into the new

form.

All 4-H members will begin using the new online forms or a new paper form that is available for download from the Texas 4-H website.

Record books will still be printed and turned in (in hardcopy form) to be judged by the deadline set by your local County Extension Office.

This system is available for use at: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/recordbooks/

Contact Debby Bodenchuk at the Extension office if you need help with your record book.
