The work of the Kentucky 4-H Foundation is reflected in the volunteer spirit of our board, in the generosity of our donors, and in the passion of 4-Hers from across the Commonwealth. All of us lock arms to truly make the best better, and keep it moving forward for generations to come. Nearly 90% of the funds coming into the Foundation are turned around directly to impact 4-H programming in Kentucky. Rest assured in knowing your dollars are spent exactly how you desire, and toward an end that makes a life-changing difference in the lives of 4-Hers and their communities, a ripple effect of change and betterment for all of us who call Kentucky, “home.”

One of the things I love the most about 4-H is its systemic approach to whole child development (head, heart, hands, and health) in a deeply interconnected global space (club, community, country, and world). There is literally something for everyone, in every way. All it takes is our creativity and fortitude to see to it we are continuing to develop a world around us that allows such opportunities to be important amidst competing alternatives. What an honor and privilege for all of us! This report demonstrates our commitment to edifying and strengthening 4-H programs in Kentucky. Join the Foundation along this journey into the heart of the 21st century.

2019 DONORS CONTINUED

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD CLOVER

These four concepts are essential elements of the 4-H experience. I want to reflect on this framework as a way of examining and celebrating our successes.

By focusing on belonging, Kentucky 4-H works to help youth establish connections with caring adults. This helps them feel a sense of connection, provides support, and fosters acceptance. Mastery allows our 4-H members to experience situations where they can learn to solve problems, set goals, and feel like they are accomplished. 4-H believes in the experiential model of youth development (Do – Reflect – Apply) that engages our members in their project work and experiences. Youth in the Kentucky 4-H program are given a chance to experience independence as they learn self-control and responsibility. They learn that they are agents of change in their own lives and can

influence people and events. Finally, the Kentucky 4-H program encourages our youth and volunteers to embrace a spirit of generosity in our program. Youth learn to show concern and caring. They learn to respect differences.

The Commonwealth’s 4-H program is continuing to grow, adapt, and thrive because of the work of our agents, paraprofessionals, specialists, volunteers and supporters. Each one of you, either directly or indirectly, is helping to impact the lives of the 227,000 4-H members in Kentucky. Thank you for all that you are doing as it truly makes a difference in the lives of the youth of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

TRACTOR SUPPLY COMPANYPAPER CLOVER CAMPAIGNS

“Grayson County utilizes the funds we receive from the paper clover campaigns for 4-H event scholarships and 4-H senior scholarships. Assistance from these funds has increased the value that Grayson County members put on programs like the state achievement program. Providing a senior scholarship to members graduating high school encourages them to be dedicated to their programs and reach for their highest 4-H potential; they too, apply for the scholarship and a committee selects from those returned, and they can receive up to $500.”

– Kindra Ewing, Grayson County 4-H Agent

“The Carroll County Tractor Supply supports us financially with the paper clover drive. They also give us the opportunity to market our program. We take our animals to the store, and each 4-H member gives a demonstration on how to care and show an animal. These demonstrations enhance the communication skills of our youth. The money we receive is split between camp scholarships and the livestock program. We have purchased clippers, a grooming dryer, and a trimming stand for our livestock club.”

– Joyce Doyle, Carroll County 4-H Agent

CARROLL COUNTY

Each spring and fall, Tractor Supply helps raise money for 4-H programs with a national in-store fundraiser known as the Paper Clover Campaign. The 2019 spring campaign raised $24,549.00 for Kentucky 4-H. The fall campaign raised $25,262.11.

4-H GAME DAY

The Kentucky 4-H Foundation hosted its second 4-H Game Day Tailgate for 4-H friends and alumni during a home football game at the University of Kentucky in September. This was a great opportunity to connect with 4-H alumni of all ages and cheer on the Cats.

The Kentucky 4-H Foundation Leadership Circle was established in 2011 to recognize donors for $1000+ unrestricted donations. These Investors help provide the crucial unrestricted resources needed to grow overall support for Kentucky 4-H, expand opportunities for 4-H members, and ensure 4-H remains a vital center of excellence in the Commonwealth.

The Emerald Gala is the Foundation’s premier fundraising and recognition event. The second annual event generated over $70,000 to support the Commonwealth’s 4-H Youth Development Programs. This event showcases the outstanding accomplishments of Kentucky 4-Hers and celebrates the year’s top 4-H youth honorees – Emerald Award Winners.

The 2019 Emerald Gala was again graciously hosted by Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown, this time at the exquisite Hermitage Farm in Goshen, Kentucky. Dinner was curated by the talented local chef and James Beard award nominee, Ouita Michel.

A huge ‘thank you’ to Kentucky Farm Bureau, for generously supporting the event as the exclusive 2019 Emerald Sponsor.

The Kentucky State Fair is a beloved event for 4-H families across the Commonwealth. Thanks to the longstanding support of the Kentucky State Fair Board and Kentucky Venues, 4-Hers converge in Louisville for two weeks each year to display projects, crops, and produce; show livestock; and compete in judging and skills competitions. 4-H Cloverville is the hub of all 4-H activities at the fair, so it makes a fitting location for the foundation’s annual Donor Appreciation Breakfast.

Four families were inducted into the Kentucky 4-H Family Hall of Fame during the event. The hall of fame was established to honor families who have created exceptional legacies of service by contributing their time, resources and leadership for the betterment of the Kentucky 4-H program on local, regional and state levels.

The honored families included the family of Dr. George and Ruth Duncan of Lexington, the Westerfield family of Ohio County, and the families of Steve Wilson of Louisville and Melanie W. Kelley of Bardwell. Each family has made a significant impact on Kentucky 4-H and it was a wonderful occasion to celebrate their support and dedication.

EMERALD WINNERS

The highest honor in Kentucky 4-H’s Achievement Program is the Emerald Award. This prestigious award is presented annually to only four 4-Hers in front of their peers at 4-H Teen Conference at the University of Kentucky.

The Achievement Program is open to all 4-Hers who can apply for Bronze, Silver, Gold and Emerald award levels. Participants at each level are judged based on their accomplishments across five categories: leadership, citizenship, communications/marketing, community service, and participation. The Emerald Award winners are chosen following a rigorous application and interview process.

These four outstanding 4-Hers and their accomplishments will be featured at the foundation’s third annual Emerald Gala on May 16, 2020, at Fasig-Tipton in Lexington.

2019-2020 KENTUCKY 4-H OFFICERS

On June 12, 2019, four individuals were elected by the Kentucky 4-H Teen Conference delegation to serve as the 2019-2020 Kentucky 4-H State Officers. Since that day, our work as a team has been filled with inspiring moments and amazing connections, lessons, workshops, and friendships.

Our team kicked off its one year term by participating, along with the Kentucky FFA state officers, in a communication training program offered by Kentucky Farm Bureau. Not only did we gain valuable knowledge of professionalism and communication, but we also learned about the 100-year-old agriculture federation.

August found us at the 115th Kentucky State Fair where we were pleased to present awards during livestock shows and the Championship Drive. We met with hundreds of 4-Hers from across the state. We also built relationships with youth and adult leaders in agriculture, politics, and Cooperative Extension. We were also honored to attend the Southern Region Teen Leadership Conference in Tennessee where we taught a leadership workshop, spoke on a panel about state teen programs, and connected with 4-Hers from across the south.

During September, we held the first meeting for the 2019-2020 Kentucky 4-H State Teen Council. We focused on connecting with our council members and planning the council’s program year. We followed the initial September meeting with two more meetings in November and February. At those meetings, we planned Teen Summit and Teen Conference, improved our communication skills in mock interview contests, and expanded our knowledge of dining etiquette with a training program and a practice dinner.

In October, we met with Governor Matt Bevin as he signed a proclamation officially declaring National 4-H Week in the Commonwealth. Following the proclamation signing, we were also taken on a tour of his office and the Governor’s Mansion.

November brought us the opportunity to meet with Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles at Gilkison Farm in Winchester. While there we were joined by the Kentucky FFA state officers to shoot photos for the 2019 Ag Tag promotional poster. We are extremely thankful to Commissioner Quarles and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture for their steadfast support of 4-H.

We participated in two important events in December. The first was a statewide in-service training for 4-H agents. During that event we met with 4-H agents, program assistants, and Extension specialists. The second was the Kentucky Farm Bureau Convention. At that event I had the honor of speaking on behalf of the Kentucky 4-H Program alongside the FFA and FCCLA presidents.

The experiences described above are just a sampling of our work. Each event we attend inspires and encourages us and shows us the amazing programs that we get to support through Kentucky 4-H. We are extremely excited for the remaining months of our term and look forward to the events we will attend, the people we will meet, and the 4-Hers we will inspire.

AG TAG

Warren County

“We use our Ag Tag funds to assist with leadership development of teens and adults. The money helps us fund partial scholarships to Teen Summit, Teen Conference, and Issues Conference. It also allows us to provide scholarships for volunteer leaders to attend KY Volunteer Forum and leader certification trainings for the horse, livestock, dog, and shooting sports programs. We’re able to assist our younger audiences by using the funds to pay for 4-H Camp transportation costs. In 2019, Ag Tag funds impacted approximately 200 youth, teens, and adults by helping with registration fees and/or transportation costs.”

Fayette County

“Our county uses the Ag Tag funds to help support a unique program. We have a barn available for our 4-H Livestock Club members to house their animals if they don’t have a place of their own. We want to offer all youth, no matter where they live, opportunities to learn about livestock. Our barn provides them a place where they can take care of their animals and work with them as frequently as possible. Ag Tag donations go to improve and maintain that facility as well as to support our 4-H members’ projects.”

– Madalyn Wells, Fayette County 4-H Agent

– Janet Turley, Warren County 4-H Agent

Logan County

“We use our Ag Tag donations to assist with our 4-H Camp fee. The fee for 4-H Camp is $225 per camper. However, for the past three years, we have been able to let every Logan County camper pay only $50. Our Ag Tag donations go a long way and allow 22 campers go to camp for a very reasonable cost. It has made a big impact on allowing kids who would not be able to afford it otherwise to attend camp.”

– Carrie Tilghman Derossett, Logan County 4-H Agent

Daviess County

“The funds raised through the Ag Tag program in Daviess County support leadership opportunities within 4-H. Daviess County youth who attend 4-H Camp, travel to conferences, and serve as State Teen Board representatives apply for scholarships through our 4-H Council. Those scholarships are supported by Ag Tag funding and provide these youth with greater opportunities to become well rounded citizens in our community. Promotion of the Ag Tag program has fostered a relationship between 4-H and our County Clerk’s office where we are able to share with one another in growing leaders for tomorrow.”

– Lindsey Dunn & Stacey Potts, Daviess County 4-H Agents

Hardin County

“The Kentucky Ag Tag campaign is a great example of communities uniting to support our youth and to promote KY agriculture. The funds generated in Hardin County have been used to support our 4-H members’ and volunteers’ participation in programs such as 4-H Camp, 4-H Teen Conference, KY Volunteer Forum and other volunteer training opportunities. We are grateful for the support we receive from members of our community and that they recognize that we are making a difference.”

– Marla Stillwell, Hardin County 4-H Agent

$30,090.00

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s Ag Tag program raises funds for three Kentucky organizations – the Kentucky 4-H Foundation, the Kentucky FFA Foundation, and the department’s Kentucky Proud program.

Total donations to the Ag Tag program for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019, were $610,860.00. The Kentucky 4-H Foundation’s share was $204,415.45. Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture, Ryan Quarles, presented the foundation with a check for that amount during the foundation’s annual Donor Appreciation Breakfast at the Kentucky State Fair.

Kentucky 4-H Youth Development Programs in all counties across the Commonwealth benefit directly from the Ag Tag program. In 2019, 14 counties raised over $10,000. Featured below are the five counties that raised the most funds.

“The Pendleton County Rabbit & Poultry Club is a branch of the 4-H Livestock Club that has been growing substantially over the past three years. In 2019, club members had the opportunity to earn 20 educational hours through meetings held at the extension office or fairgrounds. Youth learned how to handle and care for their animals (housing, nutrition, etc.) while learning showmanship and grooming. Youth also gained an understanding of public speaking and marketing skills through soliciting buyers for the show and sale. They ended the year with a meat processing workshop. The growth and enthusiasm from this club has been astronomical. As a recipient of that funding, the Rabbit & Poultry Club was able to purchase a replacement incubator, hatchery, and brooder along with a tattoo kit and ink for tattooing 4-Her’s rabbit projects.”

SUPPORTED BY THE KENTUCKY AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT FUND ENDOWMENT

The Kentucky 4-H Foundation provides the Agriculture Mini-Grant Program for county and club level projects and activities that are agriculture-related. These grants are funded by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund Endowment. Grants are provided for established programs, innovative pilot projects, purchase of curriculum, acquisition of educational tools and equipment, and volunteer training. The grants require a dollar-for-dollar cash match. In 2019, the Foundation awarded 39 grants to counties and clubs. Highlighted below are three of this year’s Ag Mini Grant recipients.

“Lincoln County Adventures in Agriculture was an educational event for all 3rd grade students in Lincoln County. While Lincoln County is still considered an agricultural community, fewer and fewer youth experience what it is like to live on a farm. The 4-H AG Day Event provided all 3rd graders in the county with that experience – to see, smell, hear, and touch what agriculture is all about. With 10 different stations -- including beef, dairy, sheep, horses, goats, alpacas, rabbits, chickens, crops and butter making -- youth were able to learn about agriculture and where the food they eat comes from.”
