Why We Do ItGive everyone everywhere the power to choose clean electricity

Who We Are What We Do• High-tech nonprofit dedicated to accelerating

accessible, actionable solutions for clean energy choice

• Built by 200+ volunteers from Google, MIT, Climate Corp, WRI, U.S. DOE, and more

• Joined forces with Rocky Mountain Institute in 2017

• Obsessed with understanding grid emissions at a granular level and turning that information into action at scale

• Effectively utilize emissions data @ 5 minute intervals for over 100 U.S. and international grids + growing

The Problem: Grid Emissions Vary By Time

The marginal power plant that reacts when you flip a switch is always changing. Power customers don’t know in real time how dirty their power is.

A dirty time on the grid. Using electricity at this time causes more carbon emissions.

A clean time on the grid. Using electricity at this time causes fewer carbon emissions.

How WattTime works with Devices

70% of devices have flexible energy use

Normal operation

Example: fridge cycles

AER optimized

WattTime’s Automated Emissions Reduction (AER) technology shifts flexible energy use to times of cleaner energy and avoids times of dirtier energy

Differentiate, Increase Product Value, Win Customers

Differentiate In a study of Chicago-area smart thermostat customers, 67% selected one that had AER. (Delta Institute)

Increase Product ValueIn a field trial of nationwide electric vehicle charging station sales, 82% of consumers selected one that had AER, even though it cost more.

Win CustomersThat company experienced 10% higher sales.

Study 2: does customer preference for AER drive translate into actual change in buying behavior?

Customer choice of smart device

Study (Delta Institute):• 100 individuals in Chicago

offered a free thermostat and asked to choose between two identical devices, one with WattTime’s AER feature and one without

Result:• Yes. 2/3 of customers chose

the thermostat with AER.

Integrating with WattTime AER

Simple Software Update: AER doesn't impact device cost or functionality, but does enable smart devices to reduce the real-time environmental impact associated with their electricity use.

Consumer-driven Design: AER never interrupts device cycles, always makes its operations clear, and leaves the user in charge.

Widespread Applications: Most devices don’t need constant energy and can do more than simply claim that they are energy-efficient. Powered by AER, they can also consume cleaner energy at the same time by adjusting the timing of their electricity use.

Device-agnostic: AER is designed to easily work with any smart device: appliances, electronics, thermostats, electric vehicles, battery energy storage. AER is ready for your device.

Flexible Deployment: Whether you want to leverage the brand credibility of WattTime and our parent, Rocky Mountain Institute, or you’re looking for a white-label capability to integrate as a feature into your device and marketing, AER is flexible to meet your needs.

Case Study: California realizes traditional battery charging increases emissions, pursues real-time charge signalOverview: Multiple studies concluded that battery storage, largely implemented in support of CA’s carbon neutrality goal, increased emissions. In response, the California PUC is proactively implementing a policy based on a real-time signal to reduce emissions.

Background:

• Times of peak energy emissions do not correlate with peak demand or price, therefore operating without real-time data runs a high risk of increasing emissions, violating carbon reduction targets and mandates.

• Traditional Demand Response and Time of Use programs operate infrequently, estimated to leave countless hours of potential energy reduction and cheaper energy procurement up for grabs.

Learnings:

• Smart devices with flexible-energy use, like thermostats, can realize reductions in energy cost, use and emissions as well as support existing and future policy and regulations by embedding a real-time signal.

• A real-time emissions signal runs 24/7/365, increasing overall energy savings in terms of emissions, procurement and delivery all without asking a customer to change behavior or reduce comfort.

• Consumers actively seek energy choice features and policy makers support reliable sources for energy reduction and use of renewable energy sources.

Case Study: Smart Thermostat AER Integration in ChicagoOverview: Under pressure to compete with big brands like Nest, Energate partnered with WattTime to help differentiate. In April 2016, Energate rolled out smart thermostats enabled with WattTime AER in Chicago. To date, 100% of customers remain enrolled in AER.

Background:

• Energate’s go-to-market plan exclusively focused on utility DR partnerships (which enabled a subsidy for the thermostat) and door to door sales.

• AER was offered as an opt-in service, which 67% of respondents chose. 0% of customer have opted-out to date. Even when called as follow-up and asked about it.

• Energate was purchased in August 2017 which stalled the plans for widespread AER roll-out.

Learnings:

• Integration: adding an AER signal is generally quick, pending:

• Current ability to take signals that change over time (e.g. price monitoring)

• Formatting used on the data you use to send that signal

• Inspire’s API
