Evaluation Goals

• Goals of the evaluation process• To place all players on teams with players of similar skill level and similar

understanding of the game so that they can have a fun and rewarding experience throughout the hockey season. A player placed at their appropriate level will develop his/her hockey skills better than a player who is playing above or below it

• To ensure the evaluation process is consistent, fair and has the highest regard for integrity

• The evaluation process will have the best interest of all the players in mind

• To communicate the process to the players and guardians so an easy understanding is available, thus making evaluations a less stressful time for all involved

• The Southwest Evaluation Procedures and Guidelines have been modeled after Hockey Canada’s Minor Hockey Development Guide but have been modified in some instances to fit the realities and practicalities of an association of our size

My favourite Myths that I hear every year

• MYTH: We pick coaches first, then we place their kids on that team• FACT: We don’t even think about coaches during evaluations; once all

players are done their first four ice times, then the Coach teams looks at where players are placing and makes decisions on potential coach candidates then.

• MYTH: If you volunteer for the Evals Admin team, your daughter/son has a better chance of making a higher team• FACT: We wish – it would help us get more volunteers! Helping out has no

correlation on where your player ends up, but there is a correlation between the amount of time a parent is willing to get involved in their players hockey career (like school, music, basically anything) and where they end up, which is why most volunteers have players in stronger age divisions

• MYTH: Evaluation Group equates to Final Team placement. If my daughter/son is in Group 1, they will be on Team 1• FACT: Due to the progressive nature of our evaluations and the fact you

need to ice the equivalent of at least two teams during an ice session, even if you are in Group 1 at the end, it doesn’t mean you will be on Team 1. Most final groupings have three and sometimes four different teams represented
