Mission StatementTo cultivate and advance women leaders in the aviation and aerospace industries through a global network.

The International Aviation Womens Association (IAWA) is an international organization for women who hold positions of impact in the aviation and aerospace industry. Founded in 1988, IAWA brings together women of achievement and promotes their advancement throughout the world.

Women are assuming greater and more visible roles within the industry. Through annual global conferences, regional receptions and connects, IAWA provides a forum to share views on matters of importance to the industry, as well as to women in general. Women should have five years’ leadership experience in aviation or aerospace to apply for IAWA membership. However, our our events and many of our programs are open to all women in our industry.

IAWA members serve as role models for other women seeking advancement and growth in the industry. We also encourage young women to enter the aviation and aerospace industry through IAWA’s Scholarship Program.

President’s MessageIAWA has Reached New Heights in 2019In 2019, IAWA continued to impact and influence aviation and aerospace worldwide. Its global outreach has Connected individuals, Inspired lives, and Led the way to a more inclusive industry.

This year, IAWA has hosted 28 Connects in 24 cities around the globe, the second General Aviation Leadership Forum, in Napa, the second European Leadership Forum, in London, and the 31st Annual Conference in Lima, Peru. More than 1,100 individuals have attended our events, over 100 speakers and dozens of panel discussions were held on the most relevant topics impacting aviation and aerospace. These events had remarkable keynote addresses as well as sessions on professional development to help women unlock their potential.

IAWA members are leaders who shape the course of aviation and aerospace. They drive change and innovation within their own companies, share their knowledge and perspectives speaking at conferences and events, and advocate for other women by reinforcing the importance of supporting inclusion in the industry, strengthening our members’ business networks, and fostering the development of the next generation of industry leaders. IAWA members are constantly recognized because of their contributions to our industry, and to the advancement of women.

The “Soaring Through the Glass Ceiling” study was concluded this year. The initiative, launched by IAWA and Korn Ferry and five other influential organizations (A4A, ACI, AIA, CANSO and IATA) is the first truly global study on gender diversity in aviation and aerospace. The Study was aimed at determining the root causes that may be preventing women’s advancement into leadership positions in the industry as well as identifying best practices.

Since its creation in 1988, IAWA has been at the forefront of the conversations on inclusion and gender equality in aviation and aerospace. We all recognize the lack of women in our industry, but little has been done to determine the reasons for this disparity, particularly in leadership positions. The Soaring Through the Glass Ceiling Study is one of IAWA’ s multiple initiatives aimed at changing the industry, and the Study has provided valuable insights into what needs to be done to continue our work and impact.

IAWA’s also proud to have expanded its scholarship program this year. In addition to the six existing scholarships with Vaughn College, Southern Methodist University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in the United States, McGill University in Canada, Swinburne University in Australia, and TU Delft in The Netherlands, IAWA has added a scholarship at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, and a joint scholarship with the Latin American Air Transport Association (ALTA). The latter joint scholarship, which is in its initial year will benefit six students at the Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá, in Panama. Developing the next generation of the industry’s leaders and assisting aviation in meeting the current and future needs for talent are at the core of IAWA’s purpose and goals.

IAWA has definitely reached new heights in 2019. The formula for success is no secret; namely, the combined efforts of the selfless and dedicated IAWA’s volunteers, and the continuous and unconditional support of IAWA’s sponsors. Reaching our mutual goal of a more inclusive and diverse industry cannot be attained by one organization; instead, it is a collaborative effort of all the stakeholders involved. IAWA sets the foundation, raises the voices, and leads the conversations. There is no doubt that, without your help and generosity, we would not be able to move the inclusion needle further in the industry. On behalf of all the women who have been impacted by IAWA’s mission, we sincerely thank you for driving change, and invite you to continue doing so in 2020.

(Presidents Message, continued)

2019 Scholarship AwardKiristan WatersHello, my name is Kiristan Waters, I am an Aeronautical Science student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduating in December 2019 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree and minor in Aviation Law. During my three and a half years at Embry-Riddle, I have been placed on the Dean’s list each semester and served as a chairperson of the Alpha Omicron Alpha Aeronautical Honor Society. In addition, I have held many leadership positions including Public Relations chair of the Embry-Riddle Women in Aviation Chapter, Vice President of the Business Aviation Student Association, and President of the Embry-Riddle Dancing Eagles. Aside from extracurriculars, I earned my Instrument rating, Commercial Single and Multi-Engine Certificates, as well as my Certified Flight Instructor Certificate in a timely manner; my Certified Flight Instructor Instrument Certificate and ATP/CTP course are to be completed prior to graduation. I didn’t learn to appreciate all the Earth had to hold until I began to fly and truly understand Amelia Earhart when she said “You haven’t seen a tree until you’ve seen its shadow from the sky.” Likewise, I want to share that experience with everyone, especially young women, through flight instruction in the near future and as a First Officer upon graduation. For the past two summers, I had the wonderful opportunity to intern with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation and I truly fell in love with the world of business aviation. This inspired me to pursue my Master of Business Administration in Aviation and seek a job where I can live out my dream of flying a Gulfstream. My interest in Aviation Law was further instated while at Gulfstream with the aspiration to prepare my understanding of the inner workings of aviation. This is so that I can attain my goal of Director of Operations for a Flight Department and become a valuable asset in the aviation industry where my passion lies.

2019 Scholarship AwardNivedita RajuNivedita’s experience in aviation law stems from her role as primary legal Associate on aircraft finance and leasing transactions at Gagrats Advocates & Solicitors in Mumbai, India. Her passion for the subject culminated in her admission into the LL.M in Air and Space Law at McGill University.

She has since made significant contributions to the Institute of Air and Space Law, winning Best Team and Best Oralist at the Qatar Airways/McGill Intramural Air Law Speed Moot Court Competition, in addition to winning the regional rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition. Awarded both Best Team and Best Memorial, her team will now represent McGill in the World rounds of the competition in October 2019.

Eager to facilitate dialogue on issues of air and space law, she assumed the position of Conference Coordinator for the inaugural Qatar Airways/McGill Rising Scholars in Air and Space Law Conference, 2019 to enable students to exchange views with academics and professionals alike.

Nivedita is keen to explore policy-making in the aerospace industry and is currently working with the Indian delegation for the 40th Assembly at ICAO. She continues to contribute to research in both air and space law at various law journals.

2019 Scholarship AwardJulia RadiusOne question after another, Julia has an endless curiosity for the world around her. She is interested in science, culture and languages. With such a variety of people around her in a world complex in nature, there is always something to learn. The joy, as a real puzzle lover not just to find the how but also the why.

Currently, she has started a master in Aircraft Noise and Climate Effects at the Delft University of Technology. Previous projects sparked her interest in signal physics, but it was a summer internship at Schiphol Airport that created an enthusiasm to be part of the change to balance the environment and transport. It’s where a bridge is needed to connect human experience and aircraft engineering that Julia hopes to continue after her studies.

In the meantime, she is active in student organizations that aim to enrich the life of Delft’s students. Julia has dedicated a year to be active in student organizations of both Aerospace Engineering and University-wide. She was part of De Delftse Bedrijvendagen board that organized a career fair with over 3300 students and 165 companies. In addition to this, she led a study tour for 30 students and 4 professors to visit 18 aerospace companies in USA and Canada.

In the near future Julia will follow courses on aeroacoustics, ethics for engineers and airport operations. Next to that, she wishes to spend time to play the piano, read classic novels and catch up with dancing classes.
