Auction RulesExpress PaymentAt the close of the auction, all auction participants must check out. You can expedite your checkout by using Express Payment. Simply present your VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card at registration. After the event, you will sign a receipt and receive all of your certificates at checkout. Volunteers are available to help with pick-up of physical items.

BiddingYou will be assigned a bidder number at registration; the number is on your name tag, as well as on the bidder card on your table. To bid in the Silent Auctions, simply write your bidder number on the Silent Auction bid forms. To bid in the Live Auction, hold your bidder number card high with the number toward the auctioneer.

By bidding in the Live or Silent Auction, each bidder agrees to these auction rules:

• Your bid, acknowledged by the Auctioneer, is a legal contract to purchase the item. In the Silent Auctions, the designation of your written bidder number on the Silent Auction form as the top bid is a legal contract to purchase that Silent Auction item.

• The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the prior bid.

• All purchases are final, and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted.

If you would like to purchase an item jointly with other folks at your table, please use one bidder card to do the bidding. If you win the item, the cost can be split among other guests at checkout. Please have all parties check out at the same time to split the cost.

Buyer’s Premium in effect. Thank you for supporting the work of Legal Voice. Our success in advancing the legal rights of women and LGBTQ+ people is due to the generous support of people like you.

You may not realize that the ticket price to this event does not cover all of our expenses. Because of this we have a 5% Buyer’s Premium in effect. This will help us cover all of our costs and direct the most revenue possible to our important programmatic work.

The 5% Buyer’s Premium will be applied to all auction items sold with these exceptions:

• Scarlet Club Membership• Dessert Dash• Raise the Paddle

Thank you again for joining us tonight. We wish you luck in your bidding and hope your evening is fun and inspiring!

Page 12: 2019 - docs.legalvoice.org

11Legal Voice Auction 2019

Silent Auctions Items offered in the Silent Auctions will have Silent Auction bid forms nearby. You may bid by simply writing your bidder number on the form next to the amount that you want to bid. Please write legibly.

You do not have to take the next available bid amount, but may skip ahead on the form to find the amount you really want to bid. The next bidder must bid a higher amount than you did to be the successful bidder.

If you really want an item, just write your bidder number next to the amount labeled “GUARANTEED PURCHASE.” The bidding on that item is then concluded and you are the successful bidder.

You may bid on any item in any Silent Auction until that section is closed. Bidding for items in the Silent Auction sections will close at the posted times.

PaymentTop bidders may pay for their items at the Legal Voice Cashier. If you have registered for Express Payment by giving us your credit card, all purchases will be automatically charged to your card. If you have not registered for Express Payment, payment in full is mandatory the evening of the auction. We will gladly accept your payment by cash, check, VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express card. Please make your check payable to Legal Voice.

You assume the responsibility to locate and remove from the site all items that you purchase. Unless you make arrangements with Legal Voice, or delivery arrangements are specifically included in the purchase, all items must be removed from the site the night of the auction. You will be asked to show your Paid Receipt for your auction items when you depart.

DisclaimersLegal Voice reserves the right to add or withdraw, without notice, items to or from the auction. All expiration dates listed in the catalog and addendum, as well as on gift certificates, are final. Unless otherwise noted, all certificates expire October 5, 2020.

Legal Voice has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, but all items are offered “as is, where is.” Legal Voice neither warrants nor represents, and in no event shall be responsible for, the correctness of the descriptions, genuineness, authorship, provenance, or condition of the items. No statement made in this catalog and its addendum, or made orally at the auction or elsewhere, shall be deemed such a warranty, representation, or assumption of liability. The value listed is our estimate of fair market value. Items have not been appraised, unless so noted.

Each person issued a bidder number (bidder) assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and to items obtained at the auction. Each bidder agrees to hold harmless from any liability arising therefrom, Legal Voice, its elected and appointed officials, members and employees, the Auctioneer(s), the auction company and its agents and employees, the event organizers, sponsors, and/or volunteers connected with the auction.

Raise the PaddleInspiring HopeFor over four decades, Legal Voice has shown up – in the courts, in the legislatures, and in our community – to ensure that all women have bodily autonomy, that we can live and work free from harassment and violence, and that those who have historically been marginalized have a voice at the table. Women are situated at the intersections of multiple identities, and therefore multiple forms of oppression, and our advocacy has shifted and expanded over the years to reflect these lived experiences.

Our belief that legal equality must translate into lived equality grounds us in values of community and justice. In the wake of ongoing threats to the very protections that we’ve fought for, Legal Voice will continue to channel our passion and rage into building power and collective action and centering the stories of those most impacted. We stand in solidarity with women of color, lesbians, transgender and gender-nonconforming people, immigrants, people with disabilities, low-income women, and others affected by gender oppression and injustice.

We’re working to protect access to reproductive health care and abortion, the right to parent your children without the fear of police involvement or racial profiling, the ability to take maternity or paternity leave at work without impunity, and the right of your child to transition without fear in Washington, Idaho, Alaska, Montana, and Oregon.

When we say Women’s rights. Nothing less, we mean it. We will continue to fight for change – tirelessly and fearlessly – until we can all live our lives with dignity, autonomy, and power.

We are excited to roll up our sleeves and continue this work with each of you.

Legal Voice Auction 201920

The Dessert Dash is an opportunity for everyone to get a delicious dessert at the Legal Voice auction. The more you bid, the better your chances of getting the dessert that you want!

This is how the dessert dash works:The desserts will be on display as you enter the ballroom. You and your tablemates discuss how much you want to spend on a dessert. You then fill out the orange Dessert Dash card with each person’s bidder number and the amount you each want to bid, then total all of the bids from your table at the bottom of your card. Not everyone is required to bid on a dessert, but we hope you will. The more people from your table who pitch in, the higher your bid total—and the higher your priority in choosing a dessert. The amount you write on the orange dash card is charged to you via your bidder number.

A volunteer comes to your table and picks up your Dessert Dash card.

When we reach the Dessert Dash portion of the evening, our auctioneer announces the table that bid the most. A representative from that table DASHES to the dessert table and picks an item for their table. The second highest bidder will then be announced, the third, and so on. The table numbers will be announced with increasing speed as we go through the dash.

Volunteers will be available to assist you in carrying your dessert to your table. Each dessert has at least 10 servings.

Enjoy your hard-won dessert while others look on and wish they had bid as much as your table did!

Dessert Dash – YUM!

I depend upon Legal Voice in many ways. I depend upon them to do work that is important to me and that I can’t do myself. I depend upon Legal Voice to let me know about important issues that I’m not aware of. I depend on Legal Voice to fight the good fight over the long haul. That’s why I support Legal Voice with an annual gift and volunteer my time.

Like most Legal Voice supporters, I always wish I could give a bigger gift and do more to support the work and the amazing staff. That’s why I have included Legal Voice in my estate plans as a beneficiary on a retirement asset. I don’t know how big that gift will be when it gets to Legal Voice, but it is my chance to give the gift Legal Voice deserves.

Legal Voice Auction 201926

About Our Master of Ceremonies, Amanda Westbrooke

Master of Ceremonies, Amanda Westbrooke has long been inspired by the gifts of story telling. Her Virginia childhood, filled with lessons, colloquialisms, and the tender stories of tradition exalted by her three Southern Aunts Ramona, Faye, and not least of all Winkie, have landed her smack dab in the middle of telling stories for purpose and progress throughout her entire life. For the past decade, Ms. Westbrooke has served as host of Tacoma's City Line Television's weekly economic and cultural affairs program. As a natural educator, here, Ms. Westbrooke wafts and weaves local tradition with urban progress. With vast experience in human resources, as a former teacher and curriculum development specialist for First Presbyterian School as Director of Education & Outreach for Tacoma's Little Theatre, and as Strategic Project Manager for Metro Parks, Ms. Westbrooke's virtues were not lost on those who have either worked with her or were led by her. Ms. Westbrooke, herself, committed to peace, justice, fairness, and progress of all types, was best shown this by her Southern Grandmother, Mary Laila Jones, who created a cooperative garden of mixed race community members in 1966, for ALL people. "You don’t have anything until you give it away” was her mantra. As a mother to grown daughter Olivia, Ms. Westbrooke would be the first to admit, the lessons of life have only just begun to tell their story. Her love of gardening, food, films, fashion, opera, and classical music reflects Ms. Westbrooke's style, grace, and elegance that comes natural to her role as your host today.

You’ll Come a Long Way, Baby: About Our Auctioneer,

Laura Michalek

Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15, when she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me Auctioneering is about giving all of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” (You can hear Ms. Michalek’s full story about her Marathon win through local NPR affiliate KNKX’s weekly Sound Effect broadcast, Episode #173.) Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.” For 15 years prior to becoming a full time Fundraising Professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again. I still set out to win, however, this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”
