Dr. Betsy Hargrove Dr. Hargrove, superintendent of the Avondale Elementary School District (AESD) since 2012, strives to continuously improve the Avondale educational community by supporting administrators and educators in nurturing every student to grow as a thinker, problem solver,

and communicator capable of pursuing a future without limits. Dr. Hargrove participates in the national STEM Ecosystem Convening and has presented sessions on Coding in the Classroom at various conferences across the country. In 2015, she was awarded the Administrators Impact Award by the Computer Science Teacher Association for her advocacy of AESD’s K-8 coding classes.

Senator Heather CarterSenator Heather Carter is a state Senator for Legislative District 15 from North Phoenix, Cave Creek, and North Scottsdale. She is the Chairperson of the Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee, Vice Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee and is also a

member of the Appropriations Committee. First elected in 2010, she has a track record of sponsoring legislation that solves many of the complex problems facing Arizona, making her one of the most effective legislators at the Capitol. She has worked to streamline government, encourage job creation, protect the most vulnerable, reform education and healthcare, while maintaining a balanced state budget through responsible spending measures.

STEM ECOSYSTEMS: THE KEY TO ARIZONA’S FUTUREIn December 2018, STEM ecosystems were recognized by the US National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) as a core strategy for increasing American’s STEM literacy and promoting diversity and equity in the workforce. As outlined in the report, ecosystems bring stakeholders together to “bridge, integrate, and strengthen learning opportunities.” Join this important session, spearheaded by philanthropic, education, business and community leaders, to better understand what STEM ecosystems are and how cultivating them could be the key to Arizona’s future.

Dr. Steve G. SeleznowDr. Seleznow is President & CEO of the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF), a statewide philanthropy whose mission is to lead, serve and collaborate to mobilize enduring philanthropy for a better Arizona. Prior to ACF, Seleznow served as program director and deputy director for the Bill

& Melinda Gates Foundation’s US Program in Education, managing a $2.5 billion investment portfolio and leading grantmaking for states, districts and networks throughout the country. He previously served as partner and Chief Investment Officer at Venture Philanthropy Partners in Washington, DC as well.

Dr. Heidi JannengaCo-Founder and Chief Clinical Officer of WebPT, Heidi advises on the company’s strategic direction and product innovation, while advocating for the rehab therapy profession on an international scale. Since starting the company in 2008, she has guided WebPT through several milestones,

including a seed round with Canal Partners, VC round with Battery Ventures and most recently a partnership with PE firm Warburg Pincus; five acquisitions, and numerous awards, including best in KLAS, Best Places to Work and Inc.’s Top Company Culture.

Chevy Humphrey Arizona Science Center President and CEO Chevy Humphrey oversees the $12 million operation of the 164,000-square-foot facility with more than 330 employees and volunteers. Humphrey serves on numerous local, state, national and international boards and committees. She is the immediate past

board chair of the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) executive committee. Humphrey is a featured speaker at science center and museum conferences worldwide, and has been recognized by several Arizona organizations for her contributions to the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The Future of Film and Digital Media in Arizona Is Arizona the next Hollywood? After a six-year hiatus, the Arizona State Film Program is back and open for business. Hear about the STEM careers in film and digital industries, the impact on STEM related businesses, and the economic impact in the state. VGP 1:30

Plumber or Pilot: What is the Difference in Space? Explore how every job humanity has created will have to be re-created for operations in space. These re-creations will take into account the realistic consequences of small errors in an environment where any sort of error has the potential to be catastrophic and thus not an option. STAGE 2 2:30

The Science of Construction This session is an industry-led panel discussion on how the construction industry has evolved to be one of the leading STEM-based industries in the United States and what different State of Arizona agencies are doing to promote construction science careers. VGP 2:30

Launching Pad: How Arizona Prepares Citizen Soldiers for Careers in STEM From the flight line to the infantry, Arizona’s high-tech military is steeped in STEM. A unique partnership between Arizona’s military and civilian communities is preparing “citizens soldiers” – members of the Guard and Reserves – for civilian careers in STEM. STAGE 2 3:30

Mother Nature and STEM (#MotherNatureSTEM)

Protecting Native Fauna Three professionals that work with a multitude of Arizona’s native wildlife and their habitats come together to present some animals they care for and discuss the importance of conservation, sustainability and the need for educating our future generations about this field. LOFT A 10:30

Virtual Expedition-Climate Changeake a virtual field trip using Mixed Reality Technology centered around Sustainable Development Goal #13: Climate Action. Using mobile devices, attendees will embark on a field study of artifacts that lead to climate change. LOFT B 10:30

AgriTech Education in K-12 The Arizona Sustainability Alliance has been working to implement cross-cutting agricultural technologies in schools throughout the Greater Phoenix Area. This session will explore the work being done, as well as challenges and opportunities associated with AgriTech, like piloting Arizona’s first food computer programs in high schools. LOFT B 12:30

The Importance of Connecting People to Nature As our world becomes more urbanized and as technology becomes more addictive and accessible, society is disconnecting from our natural world. Join us to learn how some organizations are tackling the “nature deficit disorder” by reconnecting youth and adults to our amazing natural world. LOFT B 2:30

Rural Arizona Water Education Project Decision Center for a Desert City at Arizona State University has created a platform to engage rural youth in conversations about water in their communities. Learn about these outreach efforts and the collaborations that made this project possible. SILVER 2:30

“Waste” and the 3 R’s This session will discuss how two non-profits are currently tackling the 3 R’s to affect changes that will impact generations to come. Connecting communities through current waste management statistics to better understand the role waste plays in our society. AUDITORIUM 2:30

The Journey of Women in STEM Join a group of tech driven Latinas to learn about their journey to a STEM career and their outreach efforts for female equality in the workplace. AUDITORIUM 10:30

Give STEM a Sporting Chance The session will uncover how sports can be utilized as a catalyst for young students to discover and learn about STEM principles. After all, not all students will go on to careers playing sports for a living; sports does provide a myriad of different occupations and jobs off the playing court or field. STAGE 2 11:30

Inspiring Career Confidence for All Students A panel discussion on the “How” and “Why” of preparing all students PreK-12 for career confidence and in-demand transportable skills is essential to meeting the needs of our workforce today and tomorrow. LOUNGE 10:30

Let’s Explore the Phenomena Based Instruction Students who come to see how science ideas can help explain and model phenomena related to compelling real world situations learn to appreciate the social relevance of science. Focusing investigations on compelling phenomena can help sustain students’ science learning. Participants will engage with three activities that will lead to discussion of “why did this happen”. SILVER 10:30

A Taste of Raspberry (Pi) Jam This session will simulate a Raspberry Jam (celebration of physical computing). Raspberry Pi is a low cost ($35), credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. The device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. GOLD 10:30

Using Storytelling to Propel STEM Education Once upon a time, STEM and the arts were separate subjects in school, never to cross paths. Then, storytelling brought new meaning to help people connect with STEM. Now you can learn to use storytelling in your classroom to inspire, teach, and entertain with STEM stories! SILVER 11:30

Air Pollution: More Than Just Science! This session explores how to connect science, mathematics, and English/language arts using hands-on lessons from Up in the Air, a nationally recognized air pollution education program. Learn how science instruction can be used to reinforce important reading, writing, and math skills while exploring the effects of air pollution on human health. LOFT A 12:30

Musical Painting Be a coder, electrical engineer and an artist - all in 45 minutes! Using Scratch and Makey Makey, you and a partner will learn how to combine all these elements into a single project, while strengthening your confidence. GOLD 12:30

Teaching Girls to Code and Change the World Join the sisterhood of the traveling code! Girls Who Code is a supportive group of peers and role models that use computer science to change the world. See how this fun and interactive curriculum teaches Club girls to not only learn about how to positively impact their community through code, but also learn to be brave and resilient. SILVER 12:30

Coding and Creativity Using Sphero Sphero is being used in classrooms to teach robotics and programming. We will discuss how a growing community of makers, students, instructors, and parents are all learning together through play. This workshop will discuss the need in today’s classroom for true 21st Century learning skills, and how these skills help prepare students for their future careers. GOLD 1:30

Modern Robotics for Education As computer programming is becoming increasingly accessible, it necessitates that students quickly transition from graphical blocks to real-world coding. This hands-on workshop demonstrates the use of cutting-edge hardware with CCSS/NGSS aligned curriculum on a hyper-immersive platform to prepare students for these careers. GOLD 2:30
