We are so grateful for your support of the Kadlec Foundation. In 2019 we celebrated an important anniversary of 50 years since the Foundation first started raising money to support Kadlec hospital. Through the years, you and countless others have helped to transform healthcare in our community and continue to do so each and every day. We continue to be humbled and grateful for the generosity of our community.

2019 was a year of anniversaries for Kadlec: 75 Years: The first Kadlec Hospital was built in 1944 70 Years: Kadlec Auxiliary first started supporting needs of the Hospital in 1949 50 Years: Kadlec Foundation was created to build a new 4-story Hospital in 1969

We also celebrate new beginnings as the Kadlec family continues to grow, including Renee Peck who joined the Foundation as Chief Philanthropy Officer in September. Renee and her husband, Trevor, relocated from Michigan last fall and are comfortably settling into their lives in the Tri-Cities.

This 2019 Annual Report shares a snapshot of some of the programs you and countless other donors support through thoughtful gifts to the Foundation. It’s a glimpse into how giving a day’s pay can transform the future health of our community, how dedicated volunteers can help collectively raise funds to sustain community programs, the importance of keeping seniors active and healthy, how your donations can result in financial returns, and providing extra safety for our patients, caregivers and visitors. We could not do it without each of you and your thoughtful contributions.

Your generous support when combined with others have helped us achieve many milestones and new beginnings through the years and we have so much more to accomplish with your continued support. Thank you for including Kadlec in your philanthropic endeavors and we hope you enjoy this look back at 2019.

Please be well, be healthy, and take care.

“I have always been impressed with the services that Healthy Ages offers to the community.” –Carrie SwiftYour health changes as you age, and for those age 50 and older, the Kadlec Community Health – Healthy Ages program is a great way to stay involved and informed about your changing health care needs.

Carrie Swift, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist at the Kadlec Healthplex, has been involved with the Healthy Ages program for several years, often presenting nutrition and diabetes information to members. However, she recently had the opportunity to sit on the opposite side of the classroom when she and her husband, Neil, took part in one of the monthly Medicare classes.

“The Medicare seminars are so helpful for people because it is not an easy thing to figure out on your own!” said Carrie. “Being able to understand the options and how to make an informed decision is very beneficial.”

The two-hour class covers Medi-gap plans, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare Part D Prescription Plans, and how Employer or Retiree Plans can work alongside Medicare, as well as updates on any current changes to the program.

In addition to these classes, Healthy Ages members also enjoy individualized Medicare assistance, monthly wellness seminars with specially trained personnel, informative newsletters, and other additional programs such as Mall Walkers for those looking to stay active and healthy. Kadlec Foundation is proud to support these free programs and more as a part of our commitment to enhancing the health of our community.

All individuals and couples age 50+ are invited to become members of the free Healthy Ages program. To join or learn more, please call Cathy Manderbach at (509) 942-2700 or visit kadlec.org/community/community-outreach/healthy-ages

STAYING ACTIVE AND HEALTHY…From Age 50 And Beyond

Page 5: 2019 ANNUAL REPORT - Kadlec

The Kadlec Foundation was created in 1969 to raise capital funds for the hospital to be able to keep up with the growing need for expanded healthcare services in the community. In order to qualify for government grant funding to build the new 4 story hospital, the community needed to raise $1 million towards the effort.

Many community members, including employees at Hanford, answered the call and pledged their support. Fifty years later, one of those donors remembers their call to action in support of the hospital’s needs.

Virginia Sather, along with her late husband, Richard, each gave “a day’s pay” while working at Hanford. She still proudly displays the paperweight commemorating their support of the hospital project in 1969.

Proud to tell everyone that she is 98 years old and counting, Virginia shared her story with the Foundation’s new Chief Philanthropy Officer, Renee Peck, at the hospital. They toured areas of the hospital and visited the recognition plaque were she and Richard’s names are listed along with hundreds of other donors who generously contributed to the building of the new Kadlec Hospital in 1971, which is now referred to as the Orchard Pavilion.

Hearing her talk about how the hospital has grown since arriving in Hanford in 1943 to work at the Army construction camp, it is evident Virginia is proud to be a Kadlec patient and donor. She is grateful to have all of the medical services she needs in our community right here at Kadlec. Virginia remembers when the original 1 story hospital was built to support the thousands of workers at Hanford and the many physicians and nurses who were instrumental during those early years.

Virginia shared “Kadlec is as vitally important today as it was in 1944 and the community should continue to donate to the hospital to preserve the health of our community into the future.”

In 1949, the first meeting of the Kadlec Auxiliary was held when 10 local women came together with a mission of providing supplemental amenities to patients and volunteer opportunities for those looking to help out in the quickly growing hospital.

Seventy years later, the Kadlec Auxiliary is still going strong. In November, the group hosted a banquet dinner to celebrate their 70th Anniversary as well as the fact they remain the hospital’s longest standing group and largest cumulative donor with well over $3 million in contributions to date.

With over 200 members, Auxiliary volunteers can be seen throughout both the Hospital and Healthplex campuses assisting in a variety of tasks from operating the Kadlec Gift Shops, escorting patients and visitors, sewing items, sorting mail, and more. Each year, Auxiliary volunteers perform an average total of 50,000 service hours, providing over $1 million in savings to Kadlec’s operations.

Veronica Denslow, a member of the Auxiliary for 9 years, first joined because she was looking for something constructive to fill her time after retiring and a way to give back to our community. “Involvement with the Kadlec Auxiliary has been a very rewarding experience,” she says. “I especially love working in the Gift Shop – it’s become my home away from home!”

More than just a home away from home, the gift shops in particular have been a huge asset for the group. The revenue received from gift shop sales as well as items sewed by Kadlec Kreations and sold at holiday bazaars have allowed the Kadlec Auxiliary to make several significant contributions to the Kadlec Foundation over the years, supporting a multitude of programs such as the Mammogram Assistance Fund, Suicide Prevention, Healthy Ages, and Pediatric Care.

As Kadlec grows, the Auxiliary continues to meet the hospital’s increasing needs. If you would like to learn more about how you can be a part of this important volunteer organization, please contact Volunteer Coordinator, Meg Fallows, at (509) 942-2248 or [email protected]

70 YEARS STRONG…And Far From Slowing Down

It is important to us to give locally and while we are alive to see the funds go to good use.

-Ron Nesse

Page 9: 2019 ANNUAL REPORT - Kadlec

Ronald and Laurelyn Nesse have been residents of the Tri-cities on and off for nearly 40 years. Battelle brought them to the region, but the community is why they stayed.

Ron and Lynn, as they prefer to be called, believe it is important to give back to the community that has given them so much. And more importantly, giving to health care has become one of their top priorities now that they are in their retirement years. “The expansion of Kadlec Regional Medical Center over the past few years has been really impressive,” remarked Ron. “Kadlec has a great reputation today, which allows them to continue to attract really good health care professionals. It is important to us to give locally and while we are alive to see the funds go to good use.”

Ron and Lynn joined the Kadlec Foundation’s K-LIFE program in 2017 by making their first gift to support the area of greatest need, allowing the Foundation’s Board of Directors to determine how to best use those funds. Since then, Ron and Lynn have made two additional K-LIFE investments to support Kadlec.

Kadlec’s K-LIFE program is recognized by the IRS as a way for donors to fund important capital improvements, programs and services at Kadlec while paying donors back annually at an increasing rate, currently at 6.2%. When Ron and Lynn learned that they could not only help Kadlec Foundation fund the ongoing needs at Kadlec, but also receive a financial return on their philanthropic gift, the decision was easy.

“Giving through Kadlec’s K-LIFE program has been a positive experience, we receive payments quarterly and all of the paperwork necessary to file with our taxes each year. The process has been seamless for us and we enjoy the additional benefit of knowing Kadlec has the resources to respond immediately as critical needs for funds arise. It’s a win-win philanthropic relationship.”

Individuals and couples age 60+ can participate in K-LIFE with a minimum $10,000 contribution of cash, appreciated securities or marketable real estate. To learn more, call the Foundation at (509) 942-2661 or visit kadlec.org/foundation/ways-to-give/k-life.

WHEN GIVING GIVES BACK…A Win-Win Relationship

Having Colonel around, it’s like night and day.

-Jacob Raleigh

Page 11: 2019 ANNUAL REPORT - Kadlec

2019 was a year of celebrating important anniversaries, but it was a year of new beginnings as well. In July, the office of Safety and Security reached out to the Foundation about a creative way to foster a better environment for safe and compassionate care – adding a new four-legged friend to the security team.

Although a relatively new practice amongst hospital security, existing K9 programs at Providence hospitals in Spokane and Alaska had already proved effective in successful non-violent conflict resolution.

“The intention of a K9 team is not to use force, but rather as a tool for de-escalation,” said Safety and Security Manager, Jacob Raleigh. “On the one hand, there is the fear of a bite, but also people just love dogs which begins the de-escalation cycle with compassion. Having a K9 officer in the room often has a calming effect for caregivers, security officers, and patients to help reduce tensions of a situation.”

When approached to support this initiative, the Kadlec Foundation board readily agreed and the search for the perfect pooch began. “During selection of a dog for this line of work, it is important to consider it’s drives and characteristics,” said Raleigh. “Much like a police dog, we are looking for one that will be able to patrol the campus as well as alert staff to threats such as narcotics or explosives. A key difference however, is that a healthcare security dog also has the ability to be sociable in a healthcare environment to support healthcare safety and security.”

Also important, is finding the right handler. Officer Phil Reams came to Kadlec with 19 years of experience in law enforcement. Phil had worked with Kadlec for 5 years in Security and was the department supervisor when the K9 program was launched. During the program development, he brought great insight from his experience, training, and understanding of Kadlec culture. Phil was selected to be Kadlec’s first K9 handler because of his belief and commitment to the success of the K9 Program.

And of course, one of the most important parts of the process is finding the right name. After a network wide survey amongst Kadlec Caregivers, it was decided that the new team member would be named Colonel after hospital founder, Lt. Col. Harry R. Kadlec.

Once assembled, the team began training in August at a state of the art facility in Alabama. After 9 weeks in the southern heat, Phil and Colonel were ready to come home and get to work. On the brisk autumn morning of November 11th, Kadlec officially had paws on the ground as Phil and Colonel began their first patrol of the campus.

Since then, the team has proven to be invaluable and has already assisted in several situations threatening staff and patients, quickly calming combative individuals as soon as they enter a room. “It’s like night and day,” said Raleigh. “We are so thankful to Kadlec Foundation for providing Colonel, and look forward to the day we are able to add additional K9 teams to further serve Kadlec.”
