We’ve launched the Wakefield Year of Walking to encourage everyone to become healthier and more active by walking. Walking is one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become fit. It’s simple, free and ideal for all ages and abilities. Why not simply walk to school, the shops, to work, or step outside and explore the wonderful parks and greenspace the district has to offer or take the family to one of our story trails at Pugneys Country Park, Anglers Country Park or Newmillerdam Country Park.

To find out more about the different walks and events happening throughout the year or find places to walk near you, check out: www.wakefield.gov.uk/yearofwalkingYou can filter the list of activities based on location, difficulty and distance, whether they are suitable for all the family, whether the route is suitable for people with disabilities or whether there is a cost for hiring equipment such as a running buggy.

You don’t need to join one of our organised walks to get going - there are plenty of places you can begin your Year of Walking!

Download our app and begin your 500 mile challenge As part of our Year of Walking you can now download our FREE Aspire Health app and join our 500 miles walking challenge. The Aspire Health app is available in the App Store and Google Play store.

By downloading the Aspire Health app, you can sign up to the ‘500 miles challenge’ and track your steps against other people on the leader board.

There’s monthly prizes, a calendar of events, hints and tips, new challenges and events will also be added throughout the year.

More Active, More OftenWe should all be aiming to build up to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week. Moderate activities include anything that makes you breathe more heavily and feel slightly warmer than normal.

Most importantly you should still be able to talk. Health walks are a great way of helping you to achieve this goal and become more active more often.

What are Health Walks?Wakefield Health Walks are regular, short walks that last between 20 minutes to 2 hours and are aimed at people of all abilities and fitness levels. Each walk is led by at least one trained walk leader as part of the National Walking for Health Scheme.

Health walks are FREE and there is no need to book. All walks are non-smoking and please check before bringing along dogs. You don’t need any fancy walking gear, just sensible footwear and clothing suited to the weather conditions.

Story TrailsStory trails are a way to inspire families to go out walking and enjoy reading stories together. This can help to help build children’s interest in reading while encouraging a healthy outdoor activity for both children and their grown-ups. Story trails combine the pleasures and wonder of children’s books with the benefits of walking as a family in the great outdoors!

WAKEFIELD WAY - WALK 1 ANGLERS COUNTRY PARK TO NOTTON - 6.23 MILES (10.03KM)To reach Anglers Country Park by public transport, alight at Wintersett village. Continue along the main street to a footpath on the right. Proceed to the lake and turn left. Walk to the end and continue along the path to reach the Visitors Centre and car park.

Visit the Area website www.ramblersyorkshire.org OS Explorer map 278 Sheffi eld and Barnsley

From the car park walk to the road and turn right. Continue down this tarmac track to Haw Park Wood. Enter the wood and take the right path signposted Walton North Trans-Pennine Trail. Turn left at the fi rst track through the woods, 25 metres before the wall and gate of Walton Park Estate. Continue along this woodland track to a large open space where six tracks converge. Take the second right (signposted TPT-horses Walton North). Turn left at the second track through the wood, 170 metres from the clearing. Continue along this track bearing right at each fork to reach an open fi eld. On reaching the fi eld fence turn left to the old Barnsley Canal. Cross a wooden footbridge and turn right to walk along the towpath. After passing under a high stone bridge, double back up the embankment along a path signposted to Anglers Country Park. At the end turn right and continue along the unmade road.

After the road bends right, and becomes tarmac, and before reaching Walton, take the next signposted footpath on the left to Rose Farm. Follow the path to the end of the farm buildings, go left and cross the stile. Follow the route diagonally across the fi elds to the left extremity of the trees ahead. Continue along the footpath to Common Lane in Walton. Cross the road and turn right for about 200 metres, to a wall stile on your left. Follow this path towards a telecommunications mast on the skyline.

From the mast you emerge into Chevet Lane. Cross over the road and go left for about 90 metres to a wall stile on your right. Cross into an open fi eld and continue to the golf course (Wakefi eld Golf Club). Cross the golf course with care to reach an enclosed path with high wooden fencing at the entrance. Continue along the hedged path to the end and the houses of Newmillerdam. Bear left, then right to descend steeply downhill to the lake and country park.

Walk along the length of the lake on either side and through the woodland to the very end of the park. Finish at the top left hand corner where you pass through a kissing gate into an open fi eld. Head straight across the fi eld and cross the beck by a stone footbridge, then turn left along its bank. About 100 metres short of some power lines, turn right up the hillside. At the trees, bear left along the path, which soon swings right over an old stone bridge. Follow the path through the middle of the fi eld to a left path which takes you to Notton. Continue on the path which crosses behind the houses to reach a minor road. Turn right, then left at the T-junction to reach Notton village green.

Visit the Area website www.ramblersyorkshire.org OS Explorer map 289 Leeds

Continue along the wide metalled drive (this was once the main entrance to the course) to emerge by traffi c lights at the junction of Park Lane and the main A639 road. Cross the A639 dual carriageway at the pelican crossing and turn right over the railway line at Tanshelf Station (Pontefract Line trains). Turn left at Stuart Road, signed Bus Station. Turn right between Morrisons and Tesco supermarkets and follow the road to the left past Morrisons to a T-junction. Turn left and

cross the road at traffi c lights. Turn left again and the bus station is on the right.

From Castleford Railway Station go through the underpass under the railway. Walk straight up the street, Beancroft Road, which becomes Barnes Road. Shortly after passing a small park on the left, the road climbs to a T-junction by Asda supermarket. Cross over the road ahead and turn right. Immediately after the level crossing at Cutsyke Junction, turn left along a road through industrial units.

When this road turns right, continue ahead between the wooden fences and bear right along the gravel path to the left of houses, emerging at the road by the green bridleway sign. Cross the road and descend the tarmac bridleway to the entrance to Al Storage. Here, stay on the minor road, with the beck on the right, passing Rose Cottage and round a metal barrier. Follow the path, initially with high metal fence on left. Keep on this main path, ignoring side paths. Bear right with the Motorpoint embankment on your left on the ascending track to cross the M62. On the other side, turn left and keep left at the fork, keeping parallel to the motorway.

After a time, the track bends right away from the motorway, but shortly turns left again at a 3way waymark sign. At the far end of a wood, after passing through the metal barrier, turn sharp right on a track that follows the outside rails of Pontefract racecourse. Keep on this track which leads behind the grandstand and comes to a main access road to the grandstand. Here the walk turns right along a tarmac road (but if you cross straight over it and follow the rails you will reach the access road to the car park with toilets and, a little further on, the boating lake).

Go through the car park and before the end of the platforms turn right down a gravel track for 100m. When the track turns left bear right and go over a small bridge. Go straight on down the street to the main road. Cross and turn left, take the next right up Rowley Lane.

At the top of the lane turn right into Frickley Country Park and keep left. After 50m bear right up the hill keeping the football pitches on your right. At a junction of paths keep straight on following the tarmac path as it bends left, right and left again. At a fork take the lefthand gravel path. Follow this contour path but turn right at the fi rst waymarker post. Follow this path passing an information board on your right and turn right at a T junction. After 10m turn right again to an obelisk. This is the start of the ‘Timeline for Frickley Colliery’ which gives the position of the shafts and the disposition of the coal seams underground. Follow the timeline to the second obelisk, go past it and bear right at a fork. Follow this path and go through a squeeze stile. Turn left soon turning right to go under the railway.

Turn left following a path parallel to the railway soon bearing right to the left of an electricity pylon. At a track turn left going round a metal gate and over a field. At the next field keep the hedge on your left until you see a fence with a stile. Keep straight on crossing 4 stiles and eventually turn right along a track with Wink House to your right. Go past a metal gate and at a five way junction keep straight on. Where another path crosses turn right keeping the hedge to your right eventually crossing a field into a wood. On exiting the wood keep Howell House to your right, go up the wooden steps and across the field to the edge of Howell Wood. Turn left and at the road turn right. Keep right at the next road and continue to Burntwood Hall. Just past Burntwood Hall take a footpath forking off to the right and continue forward with a hedge on your right until you reach the entrance to Howell Wood car park.

Take the access road out of the wood and turn left at a T junction. Take the next right and then left onto a track before the kennels. The track soon becomes a path, follow this for approx. 1 mile to the road. Turn left and follow the footway to Hague Hall roundabout (WF9 4DG). Go straight on towards Hemsworth for buses.

OrienteeringOrienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport that exercises both the mind and the body. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. This is a sport for the whole family, young and old, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own speed.

Newmillerdam Country Park The permanent orienteering course has been developed in the woodlands to give you a chance to try a non-competitive form of this exciting sport, using your map reading skills to navigate around a series of markers.

• Download Newmillerdam instructions and map at: www.wakefield.gov.uk/orienteering

Maps (hard copies) are available from the visitor centre at Anglers Country Park for a small contribution.

The local club East Pennine Orienteering Club organise regular events to suit all ability levels.
