Ask a parent (or any other family member) to hold a balloon (NOT inflated), pointing out that it is pretty small with no air in it. Parent: Can you make a tiny shape with your body like this tiny balloon? Let’s portray this by crouching low to the ground. Parent: I’m going to blow air into this balloon. What will happen to it? That’s right, it will get bigger. When this balloon gets bigger, can you grow bigger, too? As the parent blows the balloon up, you will gradually grow bigger and bigger until you are standing as tall as you can with arms and legs outstretched. Parent: What’s going to happen when I let go of this balloon? It’s going to go crazy! When I let go of this balloon, show me your craziest, spinning, jumping, flying dance moves! Parent: let go of the balloon and let go your child explore the movements as freely as possible.

Explore The Octopus - Ribbon Dance An octopus has eight legs. How many legs do you have? Let’s grab a ribbon or a streamer to give you extra legs to dance with. (See instructions how to make a streamer in the resources). Can your ribbon (streamer) fly behind you when you run? Can you toss and catch it? Can you spin with your ribbon (streamer)? Let’s wiggle-giggle like an octopus: Image by D1creations from Pixabay Image by OpenClipart-Vectors from Pixabay

The Jelly Fish Dance – jelly fish will sting you if you get too close! Let’s practice our sauté arabesques; glissade, sissonne and assembles (or whatever step you can remember), but when the music stops, freeze, so the jelly fish (the parent) can swim by without stinging you! We are practicing dancing in personal and general space, exploring movement qualities, and building manipulative skills. Let’s explore how can we move / wobble like a jelly fish or seaweed on the spot: exploring qualities of locomotor and non-locomotor movements

Dolphins jump up out of the water and dive back in. Let’s practice dive rolls over the carpet or you can jump up tall, then dive down to touch the floor with your hands?

Jump like a dolphin:

Turtles on land are pretty slow, but sea turtles are fast! Try walking (skipping, galloping, kicking, etc.) as slow as you can. Can you walk faster? Super speed? Let’s create a fast space and slow space in our room. On one side of the room move as slowly as you can. Kick slowly, balance slowly, roll slowly, etc. To cross the line to other part of the room: do a pas de chat (or leap, glissade, skip, or any other step you know). On the other side of the line is fast land. Move as quickly as you can. Can you jump super speed? Roll and crawl quickly? Change sides whenever you’d like, as many times as you’d like!

Paddle like a turtle or poke your head like a turtle.

Tuesday – 45 minutes

Activity / Task Students will review and recall the basic elements of dance: (see resources) Students should use Dance Elements as a resource for the bi-weekly assignment, with a parental or teacher’s help. Review The artistic process to create a dance

1. Create new movements: explore and experiment 2. Organize these new movements into a dance: select and structure (every dance has a

beginning, middle and end). 3. Refine the dance: evaluate and edit

Warm up (you can do your own warm up, use provided links in the resources and/or from Dance Video Lessons resources on HISD Fine Arts webpage, follow the warm up in this curriculum, or do the warm-up you learned with your teacher). Students may use any dance video link to physically participate in the dance class of their choice, and/or to follow the warm up exercises. The Fish and Shark Freeze Dance: When the music starts, begin swimming (or galloping, bourrée walks, turning, kick walks (battement), skips, sauté arabesque, jazz square steps, etc.) around the square that you “drew” on the floor using masking tape, rope or scarves. When the music stops, run

to the inside of the square where you are safe from the bigger fish – shark! (use your hands to interpret a shark’s fin from time to time-Dance Element Body: Body Parts). Watch that you stay in your personal space. Change the levels from low, medium and high; make the movements and shapes small or large, (Exploring Dance Element - Space), incorporate non-locomotor movements (Dance Element - Movement: non-locomotor and locomotor movements). When creating a shape during “freeze” sometimes the fish will hide behind the seaweed, sometimes the fish will become a puffer fish, and sometimes the fish will simply just freeze in a balancing shape like a seahorse.

Images by Clker-Free-Vector-Images from Pixabay Image by stef1377 from Pixabay

Explore and Experiment Objective of the project: Dance Element: Energy Qualities The student will create, practice and perform a dance to interpret the basic characteristics of different ocean animals. Can you observe, describe, identify and interpret the movements of under sea world? Can you describe qualities of all these sea animals?

1. Wiggle like an octopus 2. Jiggle (and giggle!) like a jelly fish 3. Gallop like a seahorse or balance like a seahorse 4. Snap like a clam 5. Chomp like a shark 6. Blow and float like a blowfish 7. Dive, jump or twirl like a dolphin 8. Stretch like a starfish 9. Pinch, crawl and walk backwards like a crab 10. Roll like a sea urchin 11. Swim like a fish 12. Sway like seaweed 13. Poke your head or paddle like a turtle 14. Glide like a sting ray 15. Clap like a seal 16. Swim, jump and spout like a whale

Walk around the room on your toes. Use your dancing space and walk lightly, like you are a sting ray and you are drifting away. Toss the scarf in the air and watch how it is falling smoothly and fluffy. Try to resemble that movement quality. Now change the action and walk powerfully. What about bouncing walk: can you do that? It is jittery, bumpy and bubbly walk, like seahorse gallop, or clam snap? Next, change the action to smooth: no bumps, everything is smooth and light.

Now, watch a couple of the video links provided in the resources. Observe movements of the sea animals. Let’s try to write down these qualities. Step 1 Activate the prior knowledge by reviewing some of the qualities of each items listed and noted. Review Dance Elements by performing movements per categories. Create one simple movement such as “swaying”: by swaying on the spot (non-locomotor), right, left (space -directions), up – down (space – levels), freeze the movement (body shape), fast – slow (time), light - heavy (energy: quality of the movement). Think of the words: energy and force. Explore different movement qualities with opposing energies such as: turtle and fish, dolphin and seahorse, etc. Activity (Action Words) Let’s explore Energy as a Dance Element: qualities of your movements:

• smooth

• powerful

• sharp

• snap

• swing

• sway

• wobble

• wiggle

• bounce

• drift

• float

• light Create movements that are interpreting these listed qualities (Dance Element: Energy). You can explore movements on the spot or around the circle, zig zag or straight line. You should change the levels from the low level to high level and use different body parts and shapes (Dance Elements: Body and Space). Cool down: Students may cool down utilizing static stretching, flexibility exercise, yoga exercises, repeating their dance phrases slowly, breathing exercises and/or discussing, participating in the live class with their teachers.

Students may use any dance video link to physically participate in the dance class of their choice, and/or to follow the warm up exercises. Experiment and Explore Step 2 Student will describe the qualities that embody each sea animal. i.e. student will find several characteristics of each animal, draw the pictures of them, and create movements mimicking the animal movements. Students will draw lines, shapes and pictures of animals and then they will identify sharp and smooth areas. Students will create sea animal like movements mimicking their qualities. Students will create the exact same movement in eight count that represent certain animal, so when they see the picture of the animal or hear the name of animal, they would be able to always perform the same movements. Experiment Use the scarf, streamers or a long ribbon when interpreting these qualities of the movements. Note how scarf moves when pulled stronger and how it behaves when you are circling with your arms smoothly. Note how ribbon moves when you shake it, when you make large circle, when you move it side to side and swirl it round and round. Write these words down (Dance Element Movement: Manipulative Skills). Wave the streamers in the air, shake them everywhere, move them up and down: wiggle and giggle, explore all options of movements.

Experiment and Explore Focus – (Dance Element Space) Focus Dance Move around in general space to music. When music stops, you will freeze and make a shape, but you will focus on an object in the room (e.g., ceiling, floor, door, windows, another person, a corner, clock, etc.) with your eyes and whole body. Dance while focusing your eyes and your entire body on the selected object. Example: If the focus is on the ceiling, the gaze and movement might be directed at the ceiling; arms waving upward, on relevé (on toes), or chest lifted toward the ceiling. Switch the objects that you are focusing on each time the music stops.

The following cinquain should be read by a parent (or a teacher); slowly or fast, and dramatically as the student interpret the words through movement.

Step 5: The Yellow Submarine Dance Create and Organize: Beginning, Middle and End (ABC Form) Start thinking how you can use all (or some) of these movements to create a dance based on ocean theme. Imagine that you are taking a journey under the sea with yellow submarine. What do you see? How the animals are moving, what colors and shapes they are, are the movements slow or fast, sharp or smooth?

Explore all movement qualities, try to change the dance level, or direction, try to follow the zig zag pathway, or a straight line and sometimes stay on the spot. Alternate stationary and traveling movements to interpret the space under the sea. Remember: every dance must have a beginning, middle and end – this could be translated as: A sequence, B sequence and C sequences of movements.

Words to know: ABC form – a three-part compositional forming, in which each section consists of a distinct and separate form / movement sentences. Non-locomotor movement - movement anchored to one spot by a body part. Only the available space in any direction is used while the initial body contact is being maintained. Movement is organized around the axis of the body and is not designed for travel from one location to another. Also known as axial movement. Examples include stretching, bending, turning in place, gesturing. Focus – concentrated effort or attention on a particular thing or area of concern or responsibility; a gathering of forces to increase the projection of intent. It refers to the dancer’s line of sight. Locomotor - movement progressing through space from one spot to another. Basic locomotor movements include walking, running, galloping, jumping, hopping, skipping, sliding, leaping. Often used for a smoot transitions between sequences. Create the order of your movements. Repeat the order and a dance for several times. Activity Review Dance Elements by performing movements per categories. Manipulate one simple movement such as “swaying”: by swaying on the spot (non-locomotor), right, left (space-directions, pathways), up – down (space – levels), freeze the movement (body shape), fast – slow (time), light – heavy (energy: quality of the movement) Create dance phrases as explained above.

Body shape: hold on 7-8th counts (non-locomotor movements, on the spot – items that can be represented not moving) Repeat 4 times: Beginning shape - Movement - Body shape – Movement - Shape End dance with a body shape; meaning student will begin and end the dance with a body shape (freeze dance). Movements will be in between the body shapes. Students need to connect these movements (transitions) smoothly into a dance and revise the movements as needed. Students will try to find a matching music to the dance they created.

Sometimes the movements are stationary and sometimes they are traveling. What items on the picture are locomotor and what are non-locomotor? Do you know the names of all items you see on the picture?
