Garfield tried to look hungry. ‘You are a nice kitty,’
said the boy. ‘Here is something for you.’ The boy
gave Garfield the balloons. ‘Not the balloons!’ said
Garfield. ‘Oh, no! ’
Garfield went up, up, up! He flew over the trees.
‘This is fun,’ thought Garfield. He flew around tall
buildings.

thought Garfield. ‘How do I get down?’
Garfield was very hungry. ‘This looks food,’ he said.
‘It looks like candy.’ Garfield made a face. ‘It looks
like candy. But it tastes like fuzz.’

A bird landed on Garfield. ‘What’s up, Cat?’ he
asked. ‘I am,’ said Garfield. ‘And I want to go down.’
Other birds came to visit. ‘How do I get down?’
asked Garfield. ‘Let go of the balloon,’ said one
bird. ‘You are a fat cat. You will bounce.’ The birds
laughed.

‘This is fun,’ said another bird. ‘We can stay here all
day.’ ‘Good,’ said Garfield. ‘Now I will have dinner.’
The birds did not stay for dinner!
Garfield was tired. He was hungry. His arms were
weak. Garfield let go of the balloons. He did not
mean to! He fell through the air!

But he had a good landing! ‘May I ride along?’
asked Garfield.
Garfield rode with the man. They landed on the
ground. They landed in the park! ‘That was fun,’
said Garfield. ‘Thanks for the ride.’

they had left him. ‘You are so lazy,’ said Jon. ‘You
did not play today. Odie and I played. We had fun.’

eat me!” said Sia. “I’ll give you some food.”
“I’m still hungry,” said the dragon. Sia gave the
dragon more food.
Sia took the dragon
to his house. He ate
three plates of
chicken and rice.

He ate five plates of noodles and ten sausages.
He was still hungry!
They went to the restaurant. The dragon ate
twenty meatballs and fifty fish balls with twelve
plates of sticky rice.

After that he ate six puddings and a cake. He was
still hungry! They went to the shop.
The dragon ate all the fruit and vegetables:
mangoes and cabbages, tomatoes, mushrooms
and beans.

There was one sweet. He gave the sweet to the
dragon. The dragon exploded!
“Hooray!” shouted Sia. The dragon is gone! No
more boys for breakfast!”

The Dog and the Bone
Once a stray dog came to a butcher's shop while
searching for food. There he got a bone with some
meat on it. So, he lifted it and ran to a safe place
to enjoy it at ease.
He chewed the bone for a very long time and this
made him quite thirsty. So, he went to a river to
quench his thirst. It took the bone along, as it was
worried that some other dog might not take it
away.
As the dog stood on a bridge across the river, it
looked around to see if it could safely put the bone
down while it quenched its thirst.

By chance, he saw his reflection in the water from
over the bridge. He could not follow that it was his
shadow. Rather, he thought it to be another dog
with a bone in his mouth.
Being greedy by nature, he wanted that bone too.
So, he barked at the other dog, hoping to scare it
into giving it that bone. But alas! The bone that he
held in its mouth fell into the river.

Who Did Patrick’s
Homework? Patrick never did homework. "Too boring," he said.
He played baseball and basketball and Nintendo
instead. His teachers told him, "Patrick! Do your
homework or you won't learn a thing." And it's true,
sometimes he did feel like a ding-a-ling.
But what could he do? He hated homework.
Then on St. Patrick's Day his cat was playing with
a little doll and he
grabbed it away. To
his surprise it wasn't
a doll at all, but a
man of the tiniest
size. He had a little
wool shirt with old
fashioned britches

and a high tall hat much like a witch's. He yelled,
"Save me! Don't give me back to that cat. I'll grant
you a wish, I promise you that."
Patrick couldn't believe how
lucky he was! Here was the
answer to all of his problems. So
he said, "Only if you do all my
homework 'til the end of the
semester, that's 35 days. If you
do a good enough job, I could
even get A's."
The little man's face wrinkled like a dishcloth
thrown in the hamper. He kicked his legs and
doubled his fists and he grimaced and scowled
and pursed his lips, "Oh, am I cursed! But I'll do it."
And true to his word, that little elf began to do
Patrick's homework. Except there was one glitch.
The elf didn't always know what to do and he

needed help. "Help me! Help me!" he'd say. And
Patrick would have to help -- in whatever way.
"I don't know this word," the elf squeaked while
reading Patrick's homework. "Get me a dictionary.
No, what's even better. Look up the word and
sound it out by each letter."
When it came to Maths, Patrick was out of luck.
"What are times tables?" the elf shrieked. "We
elves never need that. And addition and
subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit
down beside me,
you simply must
guide me."
Elves know
nothing of human
history, to them
it's a mystery. So the little elf, already a shouter,
just got louder "Go to the library, I need books.

More and more books. And you can help me read
them too."
As a matter of fact every day
in every way that little elf was
a nag! Patrick was working
harder than ever and was it a
drag! He was staying up
nights, had never felt so
weary, was going to school with his eyes puffed
and bleary.
Finally the last day of school arrived and the elf
was free to go. As for homework, there was no
more, so he quietly and slyly slipped out the back
door.

Patrick got his A's; his
classmates were amazed; his
teachers smiled and were full
of praise. And his parents?
They wondered what had
happened to Patrick. He was
now the model kid. Cleaned
his room, did his chores, was cheerful, never rude,
like he had developed a whole new attitude.
You see, in the end Patrick still thought he'd made
that tiny man do all his homework. But I'll share a
secret, just between you and me. It wasn't the elf;
Patrick had done it himself!
