Arkansas won 33-27 in Vermillion on Dec. 19, 1932.

Nov. 18, 2019 - Vermillion, S.D.South Dakota 71, SIUE 56

South Dakota guard Tyler Peterson scored a season-high 15 points and Tyler Hagedorn added 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Coyotes to a 71-56 win against the SIUE Cougars Monday inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. The win keeps South Dakota unbeaten at 5-0 while the Cougars fell to 2-3. It is the second time in four seasons that USD has won its first five games. Stanley Umude added 14 points and Triston Simpson netted 12 as South Dakota had four starters score in double figures. SIUE got 15 points from guard Zeke Moore and 13 points and six rebounds off the bench from Mike Adewunmi. The Coyotes were shooting a nation-leading 56 percent from 3-point range entering play Monday, but on a night in which those long shots weren’t falling, it was solid defense that produced the win. South Dakota held SIUE without a field goal for an eight-minute stretch in the first half, and for stretches of five minutes and four minutes within the second half. South Dakota took its first double-digit lead, 45-35, on an Umude jumper during one of those SIUE droughts with 11:32 left to play in the second half. SIUE got as close as six from that point, but a layup by Peterson followed by back-to-back 3-pointers from the corner from Brandon Armstrong near three minutes to go broke the Cougars’ back. Armstrong’s triples were the only two USD made in the second half and the Coyotes were 5-of-17 from downtown for the game. Hagedorn, who had made 11 consecutive 3’s in his prior two games, upped the streak to 12 before finally missing one. Now he’s only shooting a nation’s-best 84 percent from 3-point range this season (16-for-19). Fortunately, the Cougars couldn’t capitalize. They made just 4 of 14 from long range and half of those came during the game’s first six minutes. Peterson set the pace from the outset, scoring South Dakota’s first eight points all in the paint near the basket. He totaled 10 in the first stanza and didn’t miss a shot. He finished 6-of-7 from the field and also led USD with three assists. The game, like Friday night’s against Texas Southern, was part of the Collegiate Hoops Roadshow presented by AtmosAir. South Dakota’s third and final game of the tournament is at 8 p.m. Friday against Arkansas in Fayetteville.

THREE-POINTERS (USD vs. ARKANSAS)South Dakota shot 34 percent from 3-point range a year ago, but is loving the new distance the NCAA incorporated for this season. The Coyotes have made 47-of-92 three-pointers thru five games for 51 percent, which is nearly four percent better than every other Division I team.

In addition to Hagedorn’s torrid start, Triston Simpson is 10-for-16 (.62 percent), Stanley Umude is 7-for-17 (41 percent) and Cody Kelley is 8-for-20 (40 percent).

Arkansas has allowed eight 3-pointers all season. Opponents are shooting 11.6 percent from downtown against the Razorbacks, third-lowest nationally.

BATTLE OF UNBEATENSSouth Dakota and Arkansas are one of three matchups in all of Division I taking place Friday featuring two unbeaten teams. The others are George Mason at Maryland (6 p.m.) and Temple at USC (10 p.m.).

BATTLE OF THE BOARDSSouth Dakota has outrebounded all five teams its played this season. Tyler Hagedorn is coming off a 13-point, and career-high 14-rebound performance in Monday’s win against SIUE. It was his fifth collegiate double-double.

GLAD TO HAVE HIM BACKTyler Hagedorn was an all-Summit performer two years ago as a junior. He was injured at the beginning of last season and opted to redshirt, clearing the way for a full season this year as a fifth-year senior.

THE PRESEASON SUMMIT LEAGUE POLLFor the third straight season, South Dakota has been selected second in the preseason Summit League poll, just behind defending tournament champion North Dakota State.

1. North Dakota State (23) – 526 points2. South Dakota (6) – 457 points3. Oral Roberts (3) – 404 points

4. Omaha; 5. South Dakota State; 6. Purdue Fort Wayne; 7. Western Illinois; 8. North Dakota; 9. Denver

PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEARJunior Stanley Umude became the first Coyote to be selected as the Preseason Summit League Player of the Year and was joined on the Preseason First Team by teammate Triston Simpson.

Tyler Hagedorn was also chosen to the Preseason Second Team, making South Dakota the lone Summit League member with a trio of preseason selections.

INTERNATIONAL FLAIR (PLUS ONE)South Dakota’s 2019-20 roster includes five international players from four different countries, with Serbia, Australia, New Zealand and Greece represented.

Matt Johns (Australia) is the lone returning international player. Kruz Perrott-Hunt (New Zealand), Simeon Jovic (Serbia), Tasos Kamateros (Greece) and Hunter Goodrick (Australia) are making their Coyote debuts.

Coach Lee also this week signed Khalifa Koulamallah, a 6-foot-4-inch shooting guard from Quebec, Canada, to a national letter of intent.

100 GAMES FOR ARMSTRONG, AND COUNTINGSenior Brandon Armstrong recently competed in his 100th game for USD over the last three-plus seasons. He earned eight starts a year ago when he averaged a career-best 7.0 points per game. Armstrong has 86 career three-pointers and has made them at a 35 percent clip.

GOODRICK’S DEBUTFreshman Hunter Goodrick averaged nearly 20 minutes in Hawai’i. His best performance was 15 points and seven rebounds in the win against the host Rainbow Warriors. Goodrick came back and totaled 10 points in two games at home. He is the Coyotes’ leading scorer off the bench. Goodrick competed on the U-18 Australian national team. As a senior at St. Joseph’s College, he averaged 42 points and 21 rebounds per game. Included was a 68-point effort against The Scots College.

CHISOM COMPLETES MOVE FROM INDIANA HILLSJunior guard Ty Chisom averaged 9.8 points, 4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in earning all-conference honors for Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. Prior to that, Chisom averaged 15.4 points at Ancilla College in Plymouth, Indiana. Chisom has averaged 12 minutes off the bench through the first four games and leads the Coyotes with four steals.

1,000-POINT CLUB? SIMPSON 32 AWAYSouth Dakota enters the season with a trio of players who could potentially reach the 1,000-point plateau during the course of the 2019-20 campaign.

Triston Simpson is just 32 points away from the mark, and fellow seniors Tyler Peterson (143 points away) and Tyler Hagedorn (257 points away) are within striking distance as well.

Preseason Summit League Player of the Year Stanley Umude has 529 career points. He would need to average 18 points per game to reach 1,000 points during the regular season.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITIONArkansas has begun a new era with former NBA and Nevada head coach Eric Musselman at the helm. Musselman inherits a team that brings back four starters from an 18-16 campaign that culminated with a second-round appearance in the NIT.

The Razorbacks have not been challenged in four games, all of which have been played at home. Their closest-contested contest was a 17-point win against North Texas in game two, and their average margin of victory has been 30 points. No team has scored more than 51 points against Arkansas.

Isaiah Joe, an SEC all-freshman team member last year, has averaged 20.5 points while making 16 of his team’s 26 triples through four games. Junior Mason Jones is in his second year at Arkansas and has averaged 18.3 points and five boards per game this year. Jimmy Whitt Jr. started at Arkansas, transferred to SMU and is back in Fayetteville as a graduate transfer. He is featured in the starting lineup as well.

UP NEXTSouth Dakota is in the midst of its longest road trip of the season. After competing against Arkansas, the Coyotes head to California Baptist (Nov. 27), Northern Arizona (Nov. 30) and Washington (Dec. 2) before returning to Vermillion. California Baptist is 2-2 heading into a home tournament with Georgia State, Prairie View A&M and Central Arkansas.

University of South Dakota alum Todd Lee, who has garnered a national title and multiple championships throughout a prestigious coaching career, returned to Vermillion to lead the Coyotes’ men’s basketball program beginning with the 2018-19 season.

In his first year at the helm of USD, he guided sophomore Stanley Umude to first-team all-Summit League honors after increasing his points per game output by 13.3 points over his freshman campaign to 14.4 points per contest. That number led the nation for all sophomores over their rookie season. Senior Trey Burch-Manning and junior Triston Simpson each earned an honorable mention to the Summit League teams while junior Cody Kelley garnered all-newcomer team accolades.

As a team, Lee’s defense led the Summit League with the fewest points allowed per game at just 71.2 while the Yotes ranked sixth in the nation in fewest turnovers.

A native of Huron, South Dakota, Lee graduated from South Dakota in 1986 with a degree in business administration. He received his master’s degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 2003.

Lee spent five seasons as the associate head coach at Grand Canyon University, helping the Lopes to a 103-58 record. He served under former NBA All-Star Dan Majerle, and accumulated 81 wins during the four-year transition to Division I, beginning in Lee’s first year with GCU. The number of wins are the most by any program that has made the leap into Division I.

Majerle has stated several times that one of the smartest things he did as a head coach was hire Lee as his associate head coach. Lee prepared for each game as if he were the head coach with

Majerle giving him complete control of the defense.

Grand Canyon totaled 22 wins in 2017-18, the third-straight year with 22 wins or more, and advanced to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship game. The Lopes finished in the top three of the WAC in all five seasons with Lee and made four consecutive postseason appearances.

In his five years at GCU, Lee mentored five first team all-WAC selections, four second team honorees, four all-defensive team selections and

a WAC Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Josh Braun, a three-time all-conference honoree, was a three-time Academic All-American, including two first-team nods.

Prior to his time at Grand Canyon, Lee compiled a 154-81 record and competed in five-consecutive NCAA tournaments

in eight seasons as the head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan. Highlighting his run was a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2012, a No.

1 national ranking, ending the season ranked in the top-25 on four occasions and 14-0 starts in consecutive seasons. Over his final six seasons, the Panthers averaged 22 wins and had a .736 win percentage (134-48).

Lee coached five first-team all-GLVC selections and 14 total all-conference performers including Jeff Fahnbulleh, the 2007-08 GLVC Player of the Year. Lee was named the GLVC Coach of the Year in 2008, the NABC Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2010 and a finalist for the prestigious Clarence ‘Big House’ Gaines Division II National Coach of the Year in 2012.

He collected his 100th-career victory when the Panthers defeated host Wisconsin-Parkside 81-73 in overtime on Jan. 2, 2011.

Lee owns a coaching career that spans 16 years at the Division I level, 11 at Division II, two in the pros and two at the junior college level.

He spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at UC-Irvine with the final four as associate head coach under Pat Douglass. The Anteaters claimed a pair of Big West Conference Championships and captured three-straight 20 win seasons for the first time program history.

Lee and Douglas went to Irvine after three years at CSU-Bakersfield, compiling a 75-16 record and capturing the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championship. In all three years, the Roadrunners advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Prior to his return trip to his home state, Lee was an assistant coach at the University of San Diego from 1989-1992 under Hank Egan, a legend in the coaching community. Egan, who gave Gregg Popovich his first coaching job as an assistant at the Air Force Academy, went on to be an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Lee began his coach career as an assistant at Southwestern College in 1987.

He and his wife, Kim, have three sons, Carson, Jackson and Peyton.
