Friday Assemblies Will now commence at 2.50pm Our whole school assemblies will commence slightly earlier with a 2.50pm starting time to enable all grades to return to their classrooms and collect their belongings in a timely fashion before the end of school bell sounds. Weather permitting, the assemblies are conducted in the quadrangle. If weather is inclement, assemblies will be conducted in the BER. Mini Master Chef is on this coming Monday, 25 Feb Potential chefs, keen cooks and children who love cakes need to register asap but definitely before Sunday 24 February on the link www.trybooking.com/BAOGD Children may leave their entries, clearly labelled in the school hall before school on Monday morning. We have had some interesting discussions and suggestions raised. Some of the points raised last night related to growing independence, initiative and resilience in our children. Furthermore, it would be beneficial to have the school working with parents to scaffold the processes of growing confidence and the willingness to take a risk with their learning. Implicit in this suggestion was to improve the communication between home and school prior to events occurring so parents were fully conversant with the expectations for the children. This applied specifically to children in Years 5 and 6. As a staff, we greatly appreciate the suggestions and the feedback from parents. I extend my sincere thanks to the staff who have taken the time to plan and deliver the information sessions for our parents. Tonight we the sessions for Years 2 and 3, both in the BER building.

Demonstrating the Norms Our Youth Ambassadors Jackson Follett and Olive Tuppen recognised and presented a certificate to two children displaying the norms in the yard and in the classroom at assembly. Well done to Eliza McGann in 6A and James Read in 1A. Each week our Youth Ambassadors will be looking for children displaying the norms and showing a respectful approach in the yard. The ambassadors have designed and produced their certificates themselves.

Mandarin Chinese classes have started this year with children learning about calligraphy and the Tea Ceremony. As important ways of maintaining physical and mental health, Chinese calligraphy and the tea ceremony are still practised by Chinese people in their daily life. Our students experienced both activities from which they learned the technique of keeping calm and feeling grateful. Students in 3B also demonstrated their beautiful calligraphy work at assembly and wish the members of our school community a safe and prosperous new year!

Chinese Tea Ceremony We had some enthusiastic parent helpers for the tea ceremony. Thank you to: Natalie Paszko, Tammy Larkins, Mara Mitchell and Sarah McNamara

Assembly

Well done to 6B who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday. Jason Wang is a picture of concentration playing ‘Rondo’ by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at Friday’s assembly. This selection certainly showcased Jason’s capacity; he displays outstanding ability and demonstrated impressive dynamics with his performance.

Grade 2 B Readers Theatre on Yeh Shen (Cinderella) Children from 2B have been exploring the Chinese New Year recently in class and have utilised a Readers Theatre approach to engage the children, heighten their interest in the particular focus and broaden their knowledge. The approach involves a dramatic presentation of a written work in a script format ie reading a play script with enthusiasm and expressive voices and gestures. This enables meaningful comprehension of the text and is engaging for the children.

Some of the children’s reflections on the Readers Theatre process include: Last week we read a play called Yeh Shen, it was a lot like Cinderella but with a Chinese theme, we read it a lot. Harper Thickens in 2B Cinderella’s only friend in the whole world was a beautiful fish, Cinderella lived with her nasty stepsister and her naughty step mother. Libby Watkin and Dylan Gohil in 2B The purpose was to learn repeated reading. First we lucky dipped our characters. Then we got our scripts. After that we practised our play in groups. Lilly Thatcher Wallace and Georgia Evans.in 2B Another purpose was to collaborate and to be confident in reading. Olivia Mc Mahon and Emerson Sill in 2B After we got the scripts, we made character hats. Harper Thickens in 2B. Finally at the end of the week, we performed our play and got and gave feedback to each other. When we do readers theatre again Lilly will do different voices and Georgia will act differently. The feedback made me feel more confident. Lilly Thatcher Wallace and Georgia Evans. When we do readers theatre again we will do different voices to make it even better. Ella and Alex in 2B Parent Helpers in the Classroom Course Please note the change of date due to the clash with a Dad’s Club event Parents are warmly invited to attend a parent information evening to learn about helping with English and Mathematics in the classroom. This session will also include a closer look at Write to Read, which is our approach used to teach children understandings of phonograms (sounds and letter combinations) and the “Usuallies” (rules) that make up the English language and how to apply these understandings to their reading and writing.

Victorian Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. COURSE BEING HELD AT HPS - THURS 21ST FEB Not only is it a legal requirement to have a current RSA cer-tificate if you are working in a licensed venue, it’s handy to have as many volunteers as possible with their RSA if they are helping out at a school or sporting fundraiser that has a bar. With the Twilight Carnival approaching, we are offering a course to be held at school at a reduced rate to anybody who plans to volunteer their time behind a bar at either our Twi-light Carnival or any community/sporting event in the future. Details of this year’s course: When: Thursday 21st February Time: 7.00 - approx 9.30pm Where: Hampton Primary BER Cost: $35 cash on the night Contact: Sally Stewart [email protected] or 0432 552 227

We will discuss the classroom structure and routines during English and Maths sessions and your role as a parent helper. Information will be provided about the approaches to teaching English and Maths that we follow at Hampton. The Write to Read information will be of interest to parents of children from Foundation to Year 4 and the classroom help component will focus mainly on the Early Years structure but will be relevant for parents at all year levels. The session will be held in the BER building from 6pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 13 March. Childcare will be available on the night (for school aged children only).

School Notification – Important Health Message Reminder

Dear Parents, Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressive allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. The most common food allergens in school aged children are peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, cow’s milk, fish and shell fish, wheat, soy and sesame. There are a number of students in many classes who suffer from life threatening allergies to insect bites / stings and various foods that can cause anaphylaxis. It is important to understand that some children can become seriously ill by eating or simply coming in contact with these foods. As a school, we are asking you to avoid sending nuts and nut products within your child’s lunch or play lunch. We ask that this extends to excursions and class parties when they arise. We appreciate that these restrictions may cause problems for some parents as some children can be fussy eaters, however the health and safety of all students must be considered a priority for all of us. All schools have a duty of care to each and every student. The key to prevention of anaphylaxis is knowledge of students at risk, awareness of triggers (allergens) and prevention of exposure to these. The Victorian Government’s Anaphylaxis Guidelines (Ministerial order 706) came into effect in April 2014 and the Hampton Primary School Anaphylaxis Policy can be accessed from our web site for further information. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the School nurses.

Kind regards, Susie Lohan and Jo Bergman (School nurses).

Hello Parents! Recently I moved to Hampton from London to be closer to family. I am an Auntie to a student in Grade 2 at Hampton Primary who I currently live with. Back in London I was a full time nanny for a family of two kids, even travelling to New York City with them. I would organise schedules to suit the children’s needs while instigating a healthy and active lifestyle. With a clear schedule I am hoping to find childcare work here, being available throughout the day, evenings and on weekends. I am highly skilled in having fun and a lover of all things Disney! Often found singing, dancing or playing games. If you’d like to get in touch, my name is Kat Wallace and I’d love to hear from you! Contact me via mobile: 0448 499 666 or email: [email protected]
