AMBERLEY C.E. PRIMARY SCHOOL www.amberley.w-sussex.sch.uk
Friday 22nd March 2019
Dear Parents, Joint Schools Technology Day
Future rocket scientists, bridge engineers and pizza chefs were in action yesterday as Amberley and St James’ schools combined for a hugely enjoyable and successful day. Acorn class made some delicious pizzas (which I hope parents all enjoyed for tea last night). The children in Maple Class were given the challenge to design and build bridges which had to support a 1kg weight over a given distance; the children researched, designed, built and amended their bridges working collaboratively in small teams mixed across the schools; all teams’ designs were unique and imaginative and they all succeeded. Children in years 5 and 6 designed and created moon buggies as well as considering designs for space rockets. The day ended with the oldest pupils launching their rockets using the air and water pressure, some reaching a height of over 10 metres. For more photos of the day, please visit the school website.
Marwell Zoo
Maple Class travelled on the minibus to Marwell Zoo. The children saw a range of animals including zebras, giraffes, snow leopards, three-toed sloths and tigers. They went to a rainforest shelter house where they saw tarantulas and rainforest snakes including anacondas, the biggest snake in the world. The children learnt that anacondas swallow their prey whole. “It was an amazing visit. We saw animals that we have never seen before and learnt the importance of zoos in keeping endangered animals to breed them,” said William.
Little Big Sing
Year 2 participated in Little Big Sing at Storrington School last week. They sang confidently and bravely and won the praise of the music leader on the day.
Red Nose Day Quiz
Thank you so much to all of the pupils, parents, grandparents and family who attended the Red Nose Day ‘Let’s get Quizzical’ event on Friday 15th March after school. The quiz and refreshment sale was a complete success and we managed to raise £120. A huge thank you and congratulations go out to the school council members for organising and running the event, with a special mention to Emma, Bastiaan, Summa and Edward C for being brave quiz masters!
Police Raid Acorn Class!
This morning Acorn Class learnt all about the job of a police officer when PC Mike and PCSO Erica came to visit. The children were allowed to try on the uniform and put out some cones. They sat in the patrol car and were allowed to switch on the flashing blue light.
Commitment to Clubs
Once your children have decided to join a club, it is very important that they commit to going to it every week. It is unfair on teachers and other staff who commit their time to organise activities and run clubs to be let down by children who are not committed. Football results
Amberley School beat St James’s 5 - 2 in a recent home match, but a combined team from both schools lost against Ashurst School last Friday. Well done to all who played. School Improvement Adviser visit
The school received a monitoring visit recently from the local authority. Strengths noted during the visit included the following:
Excellent relationships between adults and children and between children.
Challenging work and good learning behaviours.
Well pitched tasks set for children with awareness of next steps as a major feature of the feedback given.
Consistency of expectation, demonstrated by the application of the feedback and marking policy.
Pupils’ responsiveness to teachers' remarks indicates high investment of energy and tenacity to do better on the part of both adult and child.
Across the classes there is an expectation of and a belief in incremental improvement.
Rapid progress was evident and there is a persistent nudging to do better.
There is evidence that the school has improved from the time of the last inspection. The influence of the governors in this became apparent during the visit. They are ambitious for the school and there is strong evidence that they were not complacent in the wake of the inspection report. Church Services
There will be a Mothers’ Day service at 9am at St Michael’s Church on Friday 29th March; wherever possible, please can parents take their children straight to the church. We will walk children up to church if parents are unable to take them. On Friday 5th April, there will be an Easter Service in St Michael’s Church starting at 2pm. Parents are asked to collect their children from the church after the service wherever possible. Parents are warmly invited to join us for both of these services. PE Kit
Children need to have their full PE kit in school all the time; please check that your children’s plimsolls fit. Toys at school
Parents are gently reminded not to allow their children to bring toys to school. Playground Marking - Thursday 28th & Friday 29th March
Our playground markings are being repainted next Thursday and Friday. On those days, the playground gate will be closed, so please bring your children into school via the field gate.
Maple Class Rainforest Music Workshop, Monday 1st April
Music students from the University of Chichester will be hosting a Rainforest Music Workshop for children in Maple Class. There will be a concert after school for parents of those children.
New School Uniform Supplier
We have a new uniform supplier – Broadwater Sports Embroidery in Lancing. We are not currently listed on their website as they are creating a new one, but you can still order from their website: http://www.schooljumpers.co.uk/contact Their prices are generally a bit cheaper than TEC promotions and we think the quality of uniform is better, but please let the school office know if you have any problems. Yours sincerely
