Minister’s Letter
Dear Friends
Happy New Year to you all.
Within 2019 we are encouraged to continue ‘Walking the Way’.
To engage in life long missional discipleship: living the life of
Jesus today.
Andrew Roberts, a Methodist Minister, has written a very helpful
book called ‘Holy Habits’. Now before you rush out and purchase
a set of monks robes I should explain the title. ‘Holy habits’ are
the foundations of Christian discipleship, not an ecclesiastical
fashion item. They are ten in number, and titled:
Biblical teaching
Fellowship
Breaking of bread
Prayer
Giving
Eating together
Gladness and generosityWorship
Making more disciples
The aim is to rediscover the adventure of discipleship. To re-
imagine for personal and community life today, the life-giving,
transforming role of the ten habits as seen in Acts chapter two.
In our busy lives it can be difficult to make room for God. To
encourage us to try afresh in 2019 we will through these letters
and through our church life together go back to basics – to the ï
Page 2 01/2019
very beginning of the early church – and discover the hidden
treasures of practices which can help us develop a rhythm and
pattern to a life of discipleship. Help us to work out our faith in
messy lives. Refresh our souls.
I will provide an introduction in our January worship together –
on Sunday 13th at Bath Central, on Sunday 20th at Rush Hill in
the morning and Larkhall in the evening.
Meanwhile at the start of a new year be encouraged with these
words from the book of Jeremiah [29:11-13 ]
“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for
welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12Then
you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear
you. 13You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all
your heart,”
The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,
Revd Helen

Thank you to all who have donated and also to Derek and
Mildred McArthur who each month have taken the items to thecollection point in Oldfield Park.

Woodside Residential Care Nursing HomeIt was good to gather for our service of lessons and carols in
December. Old and new faces joined together to celebrate.
Thank you to the church members who once again lent theirsupport and voices. Thank you to Revd David for reminding us
to search amidst the ‘trappings’ of Christmas for the real ‘Reasonfor the Season’. He clearly had enjoyed his visit to the gardencentre.
Our next visit will be on Wednesday 6th of February, 2.30pm.You are welcome to come along and participate in this very
worth while ministry.URC Ministry Team Bath

TraidcraftTraidcraft, a Christian retailer promoting Fairtrade goods, hasrevealed new plans to help save the company from closure.Under the new plans product ranges that are not generating
profit will be eliminated and the work force will shrink from 67to 12. In September, the company, founded in 1979, warned that
poor trading threatened to force the closure of Traidcraft plc in itsentirety. The branch of the organisation that supports farmers indeveloping countries – Traidcraft Exchange, has not been affected.

In London Vic was sectionleader for research programs in air-craft systems. But after commutingdaily from Bath for two years hewas delighted to accept an offer towork in Bath. Here he worked forthe MOD on superconductingmotor research fuel cells.

Advent Midweek CommunionDavid Pattie led a very thoughtful Advent service, centring on
Advent being a time for preparation and thoughtful silence but didalso broaden our education by informing us that it is now possibleto buy Advent calendars which contain gin – gone are the days
when all you got was a pretty picture when you opened a flap!
After the service everyone had the opportunity for chat andcatching up over tea and cakes.
It should be stressed these services are not just for the house-bound– they are for anyone who would like to come along to what is
always a very agreeable occasion. The dates for next year are:
March 27th September 18thJune 12th December 11th

What bishops do
We were celebrating the 100th anniversary of our church, and severalformer pastors and the bishop were in attendance. At one point, our minister
had the children gather at the altar for a talk about the importance of the day.He began by asking, ‘Does anyone know what the bishop does?’
There was silence. Finally, one little boy ventured: ‘He’s the one you can
move diagonally.’

Bible StudyExploring Brexit through the lens of Ruth
At the conclusion of the 2018 Autumn Bible Study Series the
attendees were asked for themes for study and discussion forearly 2019. One subject suggested was ‘Brexit’.
The Brexit referendum campaign in June 2016 and thesubsequent triggering of Article 50 in March 2017 didn’t just setthe agenda for the UK government for the foreseeable future.
These momentous events have also exposed ruptures and faultlines in UK society and reignited tensions in relation to theborder between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Brexit is a rapidly evolving situation and regardless of how the‘dust settles’ it is one which will significantly change our nation
and our society for decades to come.
The difficulty with Brexit and Bible-Study is finding suitable, quality resources. My preliminary research was not encouraging
– all the resources were ‘monochrome’ anti-European diatribesfrom right-wing theologians. There seemed to be no balancedthinking.
Then I stumbled upon a treasure – a corpus of work produced bythe Corrymeela Community in Northern Ireland. Its theologywas balanced, thoughtful and spiritual. It utilises the gentle,
inspirational Old Testament book of Ruth as a lens to focus uponthe present and future mayhem of Brexit. ï
A prayer for the New YearWere I to make a perfect prayer, designedTo rid the world of selfishness and greed,With books of lore I would not tax my mind,For these two simple lines would fill my need -
‘Renew, O God, within the hearts of menThe Golden Rule, and give it life again.’
Anon

Corrymeela has always found itself active at those places wherethe tectonic plates of conflicted communities threaten to crack
and split apart. So the situation post-Brexit on the island ofIreland and in UK society as a whole is a natural space forCorrymeela to work. The community has dedicated itself for
more than 50 years now to the healing of fractures and thebuilding of new and healthy relationships in the aftermath of
trauma.
So the Spring 2019 series will use material produced by theCorrymeela Community and we will Explore Brexit through the
lens of Ruth.
There will be five thematic Bible Study Sessions –• January 29th
• February 12th and 26th• March 12th and 26th
Running parallel there will also be four Brexit through the Lens
of Ruth Sunday Services –• January 20th
• February 10th and 24th• March 31st
Our sessions are: 10am for Tea/Coffee with a 10:30 start. The
sessions will finish at about 11:30.
We will meet in the John Williams Room.
All sessions will be led by Rev David Pattie – further information

Carol Singing on the Steps£174.79 in one hour! What a magnificent total was raised for
Christian Aid on Saturday morning 22nd December. Theweather was very kind to us and a steady stream of folk weredoing some last minute shopping along Argyle Street. They were
evidently very appreciative of the quality (and volume!) of themusic. It’s tiring “work” but everyone stuck at it until wereached the end of the Embrace booklet—no mean feat! Many
thanks everyone. Hopefully the children of the Gaza strip willbenefit from the art therapy and psychological help they need.
It’s not too late to contribute to the Christian Aid ChristmasAppeal using the special envelopes available on the front pew.The amount raised will be doubled by the government. Come
and join us next year!Jenny Stephens

In winter when I drive my car
I all too often feel a jar –That awful, cracking, grinding joltWhich brings my vehicle to a halt.
I sit, and try to comprehendWhat’s brought my journey to an end?
Then words and phrases can’t console –For I have gone and hit a hole!
A hole I didn’t see or seek
It wasn’t there at all last week! It’s full of water, just a puddleBut now it’s caused an awful muddle.
I’ve bust an axle, blown a tyreSuch menaces as do conspire
To leave us drivers sad and lostThey’re all the work of Mister Frost!
He comes by dark – he works at night
His wicked deeds are out of sight. He works those tricks which drivers dreadWhen we are all asleep in bed,
All snuggled in against the cold,While he’s about dark deeds untold.
So hearken to my dismal ode –Jack’s made a pothole in the road!
by Nigel Beeton
Nigel Beeton writes: One of the less pleasant features of January is the effect
that snow and ice has on our roads. Few of us who have driven for a few yearscan claim to have never hit a pothole. I’ve never quite sustained the damage
that I describe here, but my ABS was knocked out completely by a pothole a fewyears ago. This year, during the ‘Beast from the East’ I did assist a poor lady
who’d completely wrecked a tyre in the lane in which I live. So, a timelyreminder to our readers: beware of potholes!

Stunning new Bible-and-art Web SiteIf you want to enjoy art with your Bible reading, then visit the stunningnew £2-million Bible-and-art website, ‘The Visual Commentary on theBible’ (https://thevcs.org/) which was launched late last year.
‘The Visual Commentary on the Bible’ matches three works of art withpassages of Scripture. Each triptych has been chosen by a theologian oran art historian (so far, there are 44 listed on the site), who also providesa short commentary on the picture, relating it to the Bible verses. Theimages on the site are high-resolution, and with the powerful zoomfacility, users can enjoy the artworks in great detail.
So far, there are 50 completed triptychs, or ‘exhibitions’, and another 50await copyright permissions. In the next seven years, it is hoped that thenumber will grow to 1500.
The site is free to use. It is funded by Roberta and Howard Ahmanson, the US billionaire philanthropists, and draws on the expertise of theDepartment of Theology and Religious Studies at King’s College,London.

General Assembly, though this seems both exciting and a bitdaunting. However, I am confident that we all follow God’scalling together and that togetherness and community with each

1954 –The Argyle Players
- 2018The Argyle Players would like to thank all who supported theAutumn production of Agatha Christie’s thriller ‘And The There
Were None’. Apparently this intriguing drama has been voted asthe most popular of her many works by her public. This wascertainly reflected in the reaction of the audiences at the
production, while they tried to work out just who would befound to be the perpetrator of the foul deeds, as each of thecharacters in turn met their end, as the tale proceeded.
Inevitably, as with all Christie stories, the ending held a completetwist in the tale, and an unexpected outcome. The cliffhangerendings to the scenes drew generous rounds of applause, with
some standing ovations at the final curtain.
Taking a breath for Christmas members of the Players meet
again, in the Tovey Hall, on Wednesday 9th January and Monday14th January to plan for the Spring production, the dates forwhich are 8th-11th May. If you would like to be part of this
adventure, whether on the boards or back stage, you would bemade most welcome. If you are interested and would like toknow more, please ring The Players’ secretary, Helen Brettell on

Morning Tea
A vicar in a small country church was looking forward toan important visit from his bishop, which would involve thebishop staying overnight at the vicarage after the service. His young son became very excited, as he had never spokento a bishop before.
The vicar decided that his young son should be allowed toknock on the bishop’s door in the morning and take him inhis morning tea. His father gave him instructions: “First, knock on the door of the bishop’s room and then say loudand clear: “It’s the boy, my Lord, it’s time to get up.”
The young son was very excited and rehearsed his lines, repeating them over and over. Finally, the bishop came andspent the night. Next morning the younglad went to the door and knocked. He criedloudly: “It’s the Lord, my boy, and yourtime is up!”

My dear Nephew DarrenYour New Year resolution of
getting up at 4am and devoting thefirst four hours every day to privateprayer and meditation does you credit– although I am not entirely certainyou will get past the first week. I, too, make an annual resolution; this yearit is to become more tolerant of myparishioners.
I intend to become more tolerant ofour deputy organist Mrs Ffrench. Ifwe have a four-verse hymn, the dearlady is almost guaranteed either toplay three or five verses. If the former,I always have to be prepared to startsinging the final verse myself, whilethe congregation tags along severalwords behind and our organistgamely, and entirely unsuccessfully, tries to find out where we are up to; ifthe latter, then we all meekly sing thefinal verse a second time.
I intend to become more tolerant ofour team who assemble the parishmagazine. Copies are generally puttogether with the pages in a randomorder, generally with one sheet upsidedown. One month, we will have 50copies too few and those who fail toreceive one behave as though theirlives will be forever after entirely
ruined, and the next month, we willhave 50 copies too many, whereuponpeople complain about the wantondestruction of the Amazonianrainforest.
I will be more tolerant of LadyTrotter who always arrives for ourSunday 8am Service 10 minutes late. While we are piously at prayer, sheslams the north door, shakes herumbrella over the floor, wishes thesidesman a cheery “good morning”,drops her Service books, clumps upthe aisle in her steel tipped brogues, removes her mackintosh, fumbles for akneeler and volubly asks the entirecongregation where we are up to inthe Service. She then gives me a nodto tell me that I may proceed withdivine worship.
I intend to be more tolerant of myneighbour, an aggressive atheist whoinvariably decides that Mattins is theideal time to use his chainsaw in thegarden, that the annual garden fete isthe right day for a bonfire and whosends me a monthly rant of severalpages, taking issue with my letter inthe magazine.
I intend to … on reflection, per-haps I may decide on an alternativeresolution for the New Year.
