ENABLING CONTENT ON THE CONTINENT

LOCATION Swiss Tower, Gold Level, Lucerne 2 & 3

TIME Tuesday 8 May, 8.30am – 11.30am

TUESDAY 8 MAY

The majority of the content in networks in Africa continue to be hosted outside the continent as a result of infrastructure deficiencies, lack of critical mass, high facility operations costs and perceived security challenges. The process of accessing content hosted outside the continent introduces extra internet transit costs and additional latency for content delivery which translate to higher delivery costs typically passed on to end users in addition to poor performance and end user experience in accessing such content. The continent over the past decade has deployed adequate submarine cables and data centre capacity, but the story in terms of local content delivery has not changed by much. Why is that? Does the continent now have the critical assets required to change the content delivery landscape? How are content providers getting their information out to users on the continent? How are network providers delivering such data? • Moving Content Inland: from the landing (and earth) stations to the end users• What infrastructure is currently needed in Africa for improved local content delivery and digital

transformation? Do we have adequate terrestrial fiber, 3G/LTE networks? If not, what is holding back the proliferation of such technologies when the rest of the world is testing 5G?

• What types of applications are being accessed in Africa and how has the infrastructure been deployed over the past 15 – 20 years of deregulation? And how has mobile growth enabled that?

• How is the African market evolving to address these key issues? What are the macro-economic considerations and how are they having an impact?

• What countries and sectors on the continent are we seeing the most development in infrastructural growth and content deployment? Are there any examples of significant progress and what business/technology models were adopted?

DIGITAL AND THE GROWTH OPPORTUNITY FOR THE NETWORK SERVICE PROVIDER (NSP)

LOCATION Swiss Tower, Gold Level, Alpine 1 & 2

TIME Tuesday 8 May, 9.00am – 10.30am

TUESDAY 8 MAY

Digital business is forcing NSPs to evolve. New business models provide opportunity for growth, but place new demands on delivery models. Legacy models of business and delivery simply won’t scale for digital. Consumer and enterprise expectations of service providers are rising, as they demand a better digital network experience.

Traditional NSP architectures are built around the core. Business and network intelligence are placed in the core, which provides connectivity to the edge. This legacy architecture scales predictably, but slowly, extending time to market and risking the NSP ability to capture new market opportunities.

In addition, application needs are shifting, requiring more bandwidth, lower latency and ubiquitous availability to deliver on the modern experience referred to as “as-a-service”. This is pushing NSPs to evolve their network platforms to enable digital business at the metro edge. Analysts predict dramatic growth in SD-WAN and NFV services revenue to solve the above challenges.

• What new products and services are coming?• What are the technical challenges to realizing an SD-WAN and NFV future?• What’s the business case for a service provider to make large investments in a technology?• What options exists in the market, both in terms of the available technology and the services offered?• What potential ecosystems are developing to meet the needs of digital?

UNDERSTANDING THE CARRIER ROLE IN THE IOT BOOM

LOCATION Swiss Tower, Gold Level, Lucerne 2 & 3

TIME Tuesday 8 May, 2.00pm – 3.30pm

TUESDAY 8 MAY

While the possibilities of IoT and all the connected devices seem endless, the back end demand is substantial. With data consumption estimates only increasing what will the impact be on the network?

• Currently IoT has major implications for the mobile industry however what will the impact be on the wholesale carrier network?

• How important is partnership and co-creation of services between carriers to ensuring a seamless experience?• How can carriers create a pricing structure so as to ensure ROI? • How intelligent will networks be? Can carriers leverage AI and machine learning services to improve

IoT experience?• Will carriers start to focus on more terrestrial connectivity as the edge becomes more important in

servicing the IoT? • The demand of IoT is becoming a catalyst for businesses to prioritise innovation, how are carriers creating

this cultural change?

WEDNESDAY 9 MAY

While it has been on many enterprise WAN Manager’s horizons for the past few years, SD-WAN has begun to reach a stage where large multinationals have deployed SD-WAN on some or all of their global network. This session will review experiences with rolling out SD-WAN and discuss what changes it has lead to in network management.

• What are the impacts on overall WAN spend?• How has SD-WAN affected the in house knowledge of IT teams? Do branch office techs now need to take

crash courses in SD-WAN?• What specific metrics does SD-WAN offer and what new visibility into the network has it offered? • What are some specific applications of VNFs that WAN Managers have utilized after roll out? • What was the cost impact of deploying an SD-WAN solution? How much do enterprises save in the long

term after that initial investment?• Was there a requirement to rip and replace current infrastructure, if so, did this fall into EOL, KEC (keep

environment current)?

PANEL: CLOUD IN THE WAN – HOW TO ADAPT YOUR WAN TO ACCOMMODATE CLOUD-BASED APPLICATIONS

LOCATION Swiss Tower, Gold Level, Alpine 1 & 2

TIME Wednesday 9 May, 3.50pm – 4.30pm

WEDNESDAY 9 MAY

As corporate computing is increasingly shifting to the cloud, WAN managers ensure that the network can accommodate the resulting shifts in traffic. The geography and technology of the network is intertwined with the location of corporate data centres, neutral colocation facilities, and cloud service provider presence. This panel will highlight issues and experiences with adapting network strategy to meet the new demands that cloud services present for the WAN.

• How are most enterprises connecting to cloud providers and should this change going forward? Are there different strategies for connecting to multiple cloud providers?

• What implications do cloud services pose for clear security standards and logical architectures? • What specific methods do you use to secure this new cloud environment?• How does adoption of cloud services impact the choice of branch office connectivity? What is the impact

on major hub sites?• How can enterprises design their network to ensure performance of applications that are being accessed

remotely? How do you delineate responsibility for performance assurance between the network provider and cloud service provider?

• What are the costs and network factors enterprises should consider when moving an application to the cloud?• How does cloud provider geography affect network design?
