CENTRE MANAGER’S INTRODUCTION

2018/2019 SEASON

On Behalf of the Centre Management Committee, I would like to welcome all new and returning athletes, parents and caregivers. We are looking forward to another great year at Deception Bay Little Athletics. This year marks my 15th year at Deception Bay Little A’s and my sixth year as Centre Manager. I look forward to working with our great committee, our exceptional athletes and let us not forget our wonderful parents/caregivers, to keep DBLA the strong and spirited athletics club it has always been. This season is a major stepping-stone for LAA as they implement a change is the Age groupings. This will affect all athletes born after the 30th of September. These children will skip an age group. In doing so this will align LAA with the schools system and AA. This season we have started our winter training for our athletes who wish to train for their school sports days and for general fitness. Our dedicated coaches have been working tirelessly with the athletes and we hope this will continue for many years to come. Congratulations must go to our former club members Ella Connolly, Tamara Hotten and Ben Schmidtchen, who will be representing Australia at the World Junior Champs in Finland. It was awesome to see Mitch Cooper at our presentation day last season after he finished 5th at the Commonwealth Games in the Discus. Four former athletes flying the flag loud and proud for DBLA. We encourage all athletes to take full advantage of Wednesday night training and the wealth of knowledge available from our great team of coaches. This season Noosa LA’s will be hosting the Regional Relays and Gympie LA’s will host the Individual Championships, we hope to see as many of our athletes as possible nominating for these and the many other carnivals held throughout the season. Please feel free to approach myself or any of our friendly committee members at any time. We look forward to your company on Friday nights and at carnivals during the season. Finally, I urge you to read this Yearbook in conjunction with the Centre and LAQ Constitutions plus the LAQ Association Yearbook. Together these books provide an understanding of the rules & guidelines of Little Athletics for all members, both new and old. I would also like to thank our major sponsor Brisbane Yamaha for continuing their sponsorship for another season, who have committed to DBLA for the 2018/19 season. Best of luck to all our athletes this season. Cheers. Adam White Centre Manager 2018/2019

CENTRE HISTORY

The current location of Zammit Oval was formerly a run down Poultry and small crop farm, mainly growing pumpkins and tomatoes. The farm encompassed an area from Deception Bay Rd to Acacia St, surrounding both sides of where Zammit Street is today.

In 1973 Sam and Eileen Zammit purchased the 50 acre property and in 1974 converted half into a Trotting Track, which was located opposite the oval, on the other side of where Zammit Street is today. After extensive earthworks the other half of the property was turned into a Greyhound Training/Time Trial track which is now the oval. The actual Greyhound track was a circular track on top of the current bank area. The tin shed they used for supplies/ticket sales for the Greyhound trials was the actual clubhouse the Centre occupied from 1983 until the new Clubhouse was built in 2010 with the aid of the State Government and the Moreton Bay Regional Council. Sam Zammit was a well known Driver/Trainer in the trotting community and ran the trotting track, while his son Tony operated the Greyhound track. In late 1982 Sam Zammit closed both the Trotting and Greyhound tracks, sub-divided and began to develop the land into the area it is today. Sam Zammit offered to donate 10% of his property which would have covered about half of the oval area and Divisional Councillors at the time, Tom and Pat McLoughlin (Both Tom and Pat later became Mayors of Caboolture, with Pat being our current Patron) persuaded the Caboolture Shire Council to purchase the balance for $35000 with an understanding that the area would be called Zammit Oval.

Deception Bay Little Athletics was formed in 1981 and resided at the Deception Bay North Primary School’s Oval. The Centre was formed to provide the opportunity for little athletes from the surrounding areas of Deception Bay, Rothwell and Burpengary to learn the basic athletic skills of running, jumping and throwing.

The first Committee had Noel McGrath as Centre Manager, Doug Rosemond as Secretary and Sharon Brady as the Treasurer and in 1983 with the assistance of the Caboolture City Council the Centre moved to its current location. Over the years the Centre has produced many little athletes who have gone on to represent the State of Queensland in the Australian Teams Championships (Joanna Stone, Laura Parmar, Rebecca Oliver, Allan Shervey, Jason Dudley, Kelly Pinkerton, Katie Hirning, Louise Varley, Lisa Franks Leigh McCormick, Blake Scriven, Jared Nicholas, Dean Atkins, Chiam James, Curtis Ricker, James Lock, Mitchell Cooper, Shemaiah James, Darcy Roper, Alexander Mould, Dale Hebbard, Bailey Johnston, Jordan Guy, Ben Schmidtchen, Ella Connolly, Lucus Lutter, Josh Whiting, Zane Brown-Mills and Jonah Gordon, Latai Vehikite, Aidan Downie). Some athletes have also continued their athletic career past Little Athletics and progressed into Senior Athletics to represent Australia such as: Peter Nowill (3000M Steeplechase – World’s 2002/2003, Olympics 2004, C’wealth Games 2006), Joanna Stone (Javelin – World’s 1995/1997, Commonwealth Games 1994,

Olympics 1996/2000), Jason Dudley (Decathlon –World Youth 2001, Commonwealth Games 2006 Mitchell Cooper (Discus – World Youth Championships 2012, World Junior Championships 2014, Commonwealth Games 2018) Shemaiah James (High Jump –World Youth Olympics 2014, Long Jump World U20

Championships 2016) Darcy Roper (Long Jump – World Youth Championship 2015, World U20

Championships 2016) Josh Connolly (High Jump - World Youth Championship 2015, World U20

Championships 2016) Ella Connolly (400m – Commonwealth Youth games 2017, World U20 Championships

2018) Ben Schmidtchen (Long Jump – Commonwealth Youth Games 2017,

World U20 Championships 2018) Tamara Hotten (4x100m – World U20 Championships 2018)

INSURANCE

When you join Little Athletics, your registration includes a small insurance premium. This charge provides insurance not only for registered Little Athletes, but also for all officials and voluntary workers. The policy provides cover for all accidental injuries, which occur in any activities associated with Little Athletics. Activities associated with Little Athletics include athletics meetings at Zammit Oval and elsewhere, working bees, Committee meetings and coaching (by nominated Centre Coaches). The policy provides both personal accident insurance and public liability insurance. There is a schedule of payments for permanent injuries; an excess fee applies in some claims. Details of the policy are available from the Centre office on Friday nights or by contacting LAQ.

FAMILY FUN AND FITNESS

Little Athletics is a family activity, in which children from the age of five to sixteen learn the basic athletic skills of running, jumping and throwing. The club also runs Tiny Tots which is a play based program set up for 3 & 4 year old siblings of registered athletes of our club. Little Athletics is a fun activity in which all children, regardless of ability, are encouraged to improve their own personal performances. To achieve that goal, the Centre provides friendly competition on Friday evenings, with play training and other coaching activities taking place during the week. By joining in these activities and learning how to participate in the events correctly, your children will have a lot of fun. Little Athletics is a fitness activity which consists of simple warm up exercises preceding each meet, coaching sessions and participation in the actual running, jumping and throwing events. All little athletic activities are designed to help improve your child’s fitness and well being. Not all competitors can be champions and this philosophy applies to all sports. For the majority of our members we want to emphasise the philosophy of “IMPROVE” rather than ‘WIN”. To better our own personal performance in whatever we attempt is undoubtedly a step forward and a basis for good mental and physical health.

BEHAVIOUR CODE FOR ATHLETES

It is NOT whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. Compete and train for the “fun of it”, not just to please your parents. All athletes are to conduct themselves in a proper manner at all times both at the Centre and whilst representing the Centre in competitions outside our Centre. The Centre will not tolerate verbal or physical abuse by any athlete, parent or official. This Centre endorses the LAQ Zero Tolerance policy. The LAQ Zero Tolerance policy for parents, athletes, coaches and officials is available from the office and is also listed on the LAQ website, www.laq.org.au

-8-

Page 11: 2018/2019 SEASON North Harbour

BREACHING THE BEHAVIOUR CODE If anyone has a complaint regarding an athlete, parent or official, they are requested to report the matter to either the Centre Manager or Assistant Centre Manager as soon as possible. Although endorsing the LAQ Zero Tolerance policy, the Centre may vary the consequences depending on the severity of the behaviour breach. (eg. First time minor breaches may result in a warning from the Centre Manager or Assistant Centre Manager. A second time violation may result in a discussion between the athlete, parent and Centre Manager and/or Assistant Centre Manager. A third time minor violation or a first time major violation may result in automatic exclusion from competition/s, with the matter also referred to the Centre Management Committee for consideration of further exclusions). The Centre Manager or the Assistant Centre Manager must be notified of any and all violations of the code of conduct set by LAQ/Centre by an athlete, parent or official. All notified violations of the code of conduct are recorded by the Centre. It is the Centre’s aim in setting and enforcing the code of conduct to allow athletes, parents and officials to enjoy being a part of Deception Bay Little Athletics and athletics in general.

CENTRE RULES

THE OFFICE DBLA By-Law Apr/97 Office hours are generally between 5.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on competition nights. Parents or Guardians are required to remain with the athletes at the Centre at all times. In previous years we have experienced occasions when an athlete has been injured or fallen ill and their parents or guardians were not at the ground. We are not able to administer medical assistance without the permission of the athlete’s parent or guardian.

REGISTERING FOR PARENT HELP DUTIES DBLA By-Law Apr/97 Officials and Marshalls should register their name & child’s registration number with our Officials Officer prior to the start of competition. If you fail to register your name, there will be no record of your assistance.

NOTE: IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF PARENTS TO ENSURE THEIR NAME & CHILD’S REGISTRATION NUMBER IS RECORDED CORRECTLY WITH THE OFFICIALS OFFICER PRIOR TO COMMENCING THEIR DUTY.

CENTRE RULES (Cont.) AWARD ELIGIBILITY DBLA By-Law Apr/02 Every athlete will receive at least one Trophy at the end of the season subject to attendance and parental assistance.

TO QUALIFY FOR ANY DBLA AWARD / TROPHY:

Athletes must have an attendance record of at least 70% of the season commencing from the athletes sign-on date (Friday night competitions only).

Attendance is officially recorded when an athlete participates in a minimum of three events on a competition night.

In the event of long term illness/absence the athlete/family may be exempted from the 70% attendance requirement. To be considered for an exemption, a parent/guardian must communicate in writing to the Centre Management Committee attaching any supporting evidence of the absence.

The athlete’s family or guardian must have worked at least TWELVE times during the season, preferably six times prior to and six times after the Christmas break. This requirement may be reduced for those athletes joining later in the season, but would normally equate to working at least twice a month after joining.

The Centre Management Committee must be notified in writing immediately when a family anticipates they will not be able to satisfy this requirement. Any supporting evidence must be attached to the request and depending on individual circumstances the athlete’s family may be exempted from the full 12 night’s assistance. In these circumstances the Committee will decide on the appropriate number of nights to be worked and advise the family.

The required assistance could be in the form of, but not limited to the following: ⬧ Assisting during Friday night competition; ⬧ Assisting at one of our Working Bees; ⬧ Assisting at DBLA Fundraising events; ⬧ Assisting at our Open Day (when held), or; ⬧ Assisting at Regional Carnivals.

CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIPS

WARM UP’S

Before competition, senior athletes take all athletes through some simple warm up stretches and exercises. Warm up is at approximately 5.45 p.m. Any athlete who arrives late will miss out on this vital warm up session. It is strongly recommended that you have your child at the Centre in time for the warm up session as this prevents injury. If your child misses the warm up we suggest that they do their own warm up before starting competition.

FRIDAY NIGHT PROGRAM OF EVENTS

The available events for a particular age group are rotated each week to give athletes the opportunity to participate in and practice a wide range of events throughout the season.

The Tiny Tots age group do various activities including play training, 50m, Shot Put, Discus and Long Jump. NOTE: There will be no trial nights or holding places for Tiny Tots (capped to 40 athletes) and

Tiny Tots do not receive times, measurements or places for their events.

The U6 age group commence little athletics by participating in FOUR recorded events each night. The U7 and U8 age groups participate in FIVE recorded events, and the U9-U17 age groups participate in FIVE or SIX recorded events each night. Unrecorded trial events, play training events or games may be conducted in addition to recorded events. To ensure the U6 and U7 age groups finish competition at a reasonable time, these groups are permitted to line up at track events in front of other age groups. All athletes must complete the current season in the age group they have been signed up to.

CANTEEN Most of the products sold through our canteen are products from manufacturers who sponsor Little Athletics Queensland. Without the support of these sponsors and you the members, registration costs would be significantly higher. The canteen operates as a service to you, the members, and runs on a very low profit margin. We therefore encourage you and your family to utilise the Centre’s canteen facilities.

OFFICIALS AND MARSHALLING

PARENTS WE NEED YOU!!!

Parents are possibly the most important part of our Centre. Without parental assistance, the Centre would not be able to operate and therefore no competition on the night.

The Centre requires between 100 and 120 parents to act as Marshalls, Officials and to help in the canteen on every night of competition. This is in addition to the Committee members who all have an important role to play on competition nights.

It is also expected that you will assist at carnivals if your son or daughter should nominate and/or qualify for any Association or Regional carnival.

These carnivals are conducted by volunteers for the benefit of the athletes, including yours.

DUTIES OF AN OFFICIAL

➢ This can be as simple as raking the long jump pit, returning or marking the spot where a shot put or discus has landed, or helping out in the canteen.

➢ New and old members alike are asked to come forward as there is always an experienced official on each event who will be more than happy to help you out. PLEASE don’t hesitate to come forward as your help is always appreciated regardless of your qualifications and/or experience.

DUTIES OF AN AGE MARSHALL

➢ To maintain control of the athletes in the age group to which you have been assigned;

GENERAL INFORMATION

NOTICE BOARDS

Notice boards are posted on competition nights. Please check these notice boards regularly for competition dates, closing dates etc. Any other important Centre information will also be posted on these boards. Parents are reminded that the L.A. News can be found on the LAQ Website: www.laq.org.au This publication is a newsletter from Little Athletics Queensland and contains important and interesting information. We suggest that you take some time to read it.

NEWSLETTER The Public Relations Officer will publish a newsletter on a weekly basis which is available from the Office or electronically on the Centre’s Website. If you have anything that you would like to include in the newsletter, see our Public Relations Officer. Items of interest could be birthdays, achievements outside the Little Athletics arena, etc. The Public Relations Officer can also organise advertising in the Newsletter at a very reasonable cost.

CENTRE WEBSITE www.deceptionbayla.asn.au

The Centre has an official Website which is updated regularly by the IT Officer. The site contains a considerable amount of information including Records, Awards, Photos, Open Day Information, Useful Links, Calendar plus much more. It also has a News section which includes last minute information regarding the Centre and its current activities. The Centre’s thanks go to Dave Varley (Life Member) and Mat Clarke (DBLA Committee Member) for their many hours of voluntary work in the initial planning, upgrade and design of the website.

CLOTHING

As it is quite cool during the first couple of months of the season, we suggest that children and parents alike wear warm clothing both to training and on competition nights. Children should always put their tracksuit or the like on between events and at the end of the evening. Please have all clothing and footwear clearly marked to prevent loss. Always check the lost property box each night as items of clothing etc. are always being handed into the office. Any unclaimed items are given away to charity at the end of the season.

PARENTS OF ASTHMATICS Parents of children who suffer from any form of asthma are requested to ensure that their children take their medication before the commencement of their race. Medication helps open the air passages to allow for easier breathing. In past years it has been noted that children are taking their medication after the race, which is of little use to them. We do not want to see an athlete “collapsing” during an event.

➢ PBs from current season DBLA Centre competitions only are used for the purpose of selecting the Regional Relay Teams and determining the recipients for the Laurie Baartz and Age Achievement trophies.

FUNDRAISING

Fundraising is an important part of our Centre. We are a non-profit organisation and rely on funds derived from activities such as weekly raffles, Christmas raffles, Chocolate drives etc. We would appreciate your involvement and support.

Our Chocolate drive is an integral part of our Fundraising activities and we would like to encourage all families to participate in this annual fundraising activity. Those families who participate are reminded that, because of the possibility of contamination, the Centre will not accept the return of any un-sold boxes/part boxes of Chocolates.

The only fundraising to be conducted on Centre competition nights/DBLA Open Day shall be in favour of the DBLA Centre unless otherwise approved by the Centre Committee.

No person has the authority to fundraise on behalf of the DBLA Centre without the permission of the Centre Committee.

Parents are asked to contribute some finger food on the night of either a plate of sweets or savouries. REGIONAL INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (RC) The Regional Individuals provide an opportunity for all athletes from within our Region to meet for two days of friendly competition. The Regional Individuals gives everyone a chance to compete with athletes from other Centres in our Region. All competitors receive a performance certificate detailing the events they contest. At Regionals, athletes in the U16 and U17 age groups compete as individual age groups. This event is open to all registered LAQ athletes from U7 to U17's, each of whom may compete in up to five events of their choice. Events offered to the U15/U17 age group include a Heptathlon which comprises 100m, 800m, 100m hurdles, Long Jump, Discus Javelin and High Jump (Boys) and 200m, 800m, 90m hurdles, Long Jump, Shot Put, Javelin and High Jump (Girls). Athletes nominating for the Heptathlon may also compete in any two individual events.

These Regional Individuals are also the qualifying competition for entry to the State Championships which are held each year in March. Athletes in the U9 - U17 age groups that place first, second, third, fourth or achieve a qualifying time/distance are able to compete at the State Championships. See the Office for the relevant qualifying times/distances. Athletes in the U7-U8 age groups do not progress past Regional Level.

LAQ STATE TEAM SELECTION The State Team of 26 athletes is selected during the State Championships. The team comprises of eleven U13 Boys, eleven U13 Girls and six U15 Heptathletes (three boys and three girls). REGIONAL RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS (RRC)

The Regional Relays are open to all registered Little Athletes from the U7 - U17 age groups and are the same as all other Association Regional Days in that primarily they provide friendly Inter Centre competition for all athletes between the Centres in our Region which includes Deception Bay, Caboolture, Wamuran, Gympie, Bli Bli, Caloundra, Glasshouse, Maleny, Maroochy, Nambour, Noosa, Sunshine Coast Uni, Bribie Island, Nanango, Cooloola Coast and South Burnett. In addition, these Regional Relays are the means for qualifying for the State Relay Championships held in Brisbane each year. At Regional Relays, athletes in the U16 and U17 age groups compete as individual age groups.

DBLA By-Law Dec/13

Regional/State Relays have Track teams comprising of 4 athletes and Field teams comprising of 2 athletes. All nominated Field competitors compete at Regional Relays and are placed into teams following the competition based on their performance. Depending on how many athletes in a particular age group have nominated, the Track teams from Deception Bay are placed by the Recorders based on individual DBLA Centre PBs (best performances) of registered athletes during the first 6 competition nights of the current season in the nominated event.

NOTE: It is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure they are registered and

have recorded a performance within the first 6 competition nights prior to the nominations closing date, generally mid-October, whichever first occurs. No athlete shall be entitled to improve their centre competition performance. However, the Centre may, at its absolute discretion, provide a trial night to record a performance for athletes with a valid reason and who have failed to record a centre performance. Once nominations have closed athletes may request or be requested by the Centre to compete at Regional Relays only to help fill incomplete teams in their own age group or up to 2 age groups above. There are no finals at Relays with placings decided on the times and/or total distances recorded in the 'heats'. Athletes in the U9 to U17 age groups may nominate to participate in a maximum number of 5 events. U7 & U8 athletes may nominate to participate in a maximum number of 3 events. The winning team in a track competition is based on the last runner in a team of 4 past the finish line. The winning team in a field competition is based on the total height or distance of both the athletes (eg. For High Jump 1st athlete jumps 1.21m, 2nd athlete jumps 1.30m. The total height for the team is 2.51m).

The U7 & U8's who participate in the Regional Relays do not progress past Regional level. For the U9's to U17's, all teams that place first, second and third progress to the State Relay Championships. Athletes must compete at Regional Relay Championships in order to progress.

COMPETITIONS/CARNIVALS (Cont.)

JUNIOR & SENIOR CARNIVALS

The Junior Carnival (U7-U10) and Senior Carnival (U11-U17), enables all registered athletes the opportunity to take part in a large scale competition without any of the pressures associated with a Championship. U9 – U17 athletes may nominate in a maximum of five events with four events the maximum for the U7 and U8 age groups. At Senior Carnival, athletes in the U16 and U17 age groups compete as individual age groups. The Senior Carnival also allows the athletes in the U13 age group to register performances to which the State Team Selectors may need to refer to later in the season when selecting the State Team. Similarly, any U15 Multi Event State Team aspirants can gain additional valuable competition.

PENTATHLONS

The LAQ Pentathlon is open to all LAQ registered athletes in the U9 - U17 age groups and is run on the same day as the Junior and Senior Carnivals. At the LAQ Pentathlon, athletes in the U16 and U17 age groups compete as individual age groups. The Pentathlon is an event which promotes one of the main goals of Little Athletics, which is encouraging children to compete in a broad range of events. All athletes within a particular age group must compete in the same 5 events, which differ depending on your age group. Individual points are allocated to the athlete according to the level of performance achieved in each of the five events. (ie. The faster the time or the farther you jump/throw, the more points you achieve). The winner is the athlete with the most points at the completion of all 5 events.

The criteria for the Gold Levels are held in the Centre Office. Athletes are awarded the different coloured trophies based on the highest achievement of the same colour in 3 different categories. The only exception is the Under 6 & 7’s who only require two Gold levels and one Blue level to be awarded a Gold level trophy.

CENTRE AWARDS – CERTIFICATES/PINS

UNDER 17 LAQ CERTIFICATES These LAQ Certificates are given to all Under 17 athletes in recognition for their participation in Little Athletics.

AUSTRALIAN TEN YEAR PARTICIPATION PIN This pin is presented by LAQ to athletes with a total of 10 years participation in Little Athletics within Australia. (Not required to be continuous).

DBLA FIVE YEAR PARTICIPATION PIN This pin is presented to athletes who have been a member of Deception Bay Little Athletics for a period of 5 years. (Not required to be continuous)

COACHES CERTIFICATES These certificates are presented to the Centre coaches in recognition for their contribution and support throughout the season.

PARENT CERTIFICATES Instead of charging an expensive Parent Levy, our parents are required to help at least 12 times during the season for their child to be eligible for a trophy. We have decided on this arrangement to make it equitable for all families and to ensure we have enough workers each Friday night to enable the program to be run quickly and efficiently. Parent Certificates and/or gifts are awarded each year to those families who do that little bit extra during the season and help out at least 17 times at our Centre on Friday nights, at Centre working bees or assisting at Regional Carnivals.

Deception Bay Athletics Club was established in 1996 to provide Athletes alternative training and competition whilst still competing with the Deception Bay Little Athletics Centre. Since then, the Club has grown to include Athletes from all parts of the region and Little Athletes who wish to train and compete more frequently. Deception Bay Amateur Athletics Club is governed by Queensland Athletics (QA). Being a member of the athletics club gives you access to additional track & field and cross country events all year round. Events are open to all QA members turning 12 years to Masters. Queensland Athletics also offers Coach Education (available to everyone), and High Performance Squads for emerging and talented athletes. How do I compete at a QA Event?

1. Become a QA Member

2. Register and pay for the event online

3. Turn up to the event with both of your QA numbers and compete- it’s that simple!

What are the Rules of a QA Meet?

• You can compete in one or as many events as you wish

• You must check-in at the Check-In Desk at least half hour before your event start

time

• You can compete in your Little A’s uniform, however you must wear both of your QA

numbers (issued to you when you register as a QA Member), not your LA’s number

• All athletes get a minimum of 4 trials in field events and all track events are seeded

by athlete performance

Queensland Athletics offers several membership options to suit everyone, including a Little A’s Dual Membership starting from only $55. Membership is valid from 1 October to 30 September the following year. How do I become a member? For further information, contact the amateur club on 07 3888 2407, email them at [email protected] or visit their website at www.dbayathletics.org.au Athletes 30 years and over are welcome to train with Deception Bay Athletics Club. STATE REPRESENTATIVES

Every year Little Athletics Australia holds a National competition called the “Australian Little Athletics Championships”. This event allows Queensland selectors to choose 13 boys and 13girls from the Under 13 age group to compete in individual events for team points and 3 girls and 3 boys from the Under 15 age group to compete in a Pentathlon.

This year our Club was very proud to have one athlete selected to represent Queensland. This is the 17th time out of 18 seasons that we have had representative/s from our Club on the State team. From our Under 13 Boys, Aidan Downie was selected to compete.
