Dear Friends,

Welcome to our 2018-2019 Season! This year we offer a breadth and depth of artists and programs with San Francisco Performances’ signature mix of must-see artists, significant new voices, eagerly anticipated debuts, and a dynamic bal-ance of cherished classics and premieres.

We are constantly striving, as curators, to look ever deeper into what makes a good concert, an inviting series and an inspiring season. Most important, we bring you, the audience, face-to-face with artists in intimate settings that allow you to share the energy and excitement that are only possible in live performance.

Through our ongoing audience research and in conversation with many of you, we hear about what you enjoy most with SF Performances. As always, our season features a wealth of familiar works as well as opportunities to be the first to experience the next wave of performers and creators.

The 2018-2019 Season presents masters of the music of history as well as artists giving voice to our time through programs and events that are relevant and reflective of the world around us.

To help guide you in selecting concerts, we have identified sub-themes that are woven into the season. These themes include Classics, Baroque Beauty, New Works, Important Debuts, and Lean In/Listen. Exploring themes that appeal to you and customizing your Make-Your-Own series will highlight connections between concerts and artists, adding depth and richness to your experience.

I look forward to seeing you again this coming season as we bring great artists and great audiences together once again.

Warmly,

Melanie Smith President, San Francisco Performances

The music of our time often holds a mirror to what’s happening in our world and how we perceive it, closely reflecting what’s important, or at least what’s up. The past was often no different—some of history’s most insightful social commentary and essence can be found in music. How people live and love, win and lose, learn and grow can be expressed with remarkable dif-ference and pointed familiarity by composers who lived hundreds of years apart.

The distant past and the intensely present come together in this series exploring the differences and commonalities between historical and contemporary music.

Vocal ensemble TENET teams up with instrumentalists from the early music group Quicksilver to perform music from the Italian Baroque era, featuring Claudio Monteverdi, one of that period’s envelope-pushing “contemporary” composers. Celebrated program innovator and violinist Daniel Hope presents a sonic history of the violin and the musical form of the “air” through works spanning three centuries, proving that “crossover” has been around for a while. Matt Haimovitz—who has spent a career successfully rethinking how and where music is performed and heard—joins forces with genius jazz composer-performer Vijay Iyer. Third Coast Percussion completes the series with an eagerly anticipated premiere of a substantial new work by Philip Glass.

Big and bold works and larger-than-life interpretations by accomplished perform-ers at the peak of their careers headline the piano series this season. Garrick Ohlsson tackles two programs of Brahms, begin-ning a multi-year series during which he will perform the composer’s complete works for solo piano. 2018 Gilmore Artist Igor Levit’s program celebrates how the great Romantics reinterpreted composers of earlier eras—and their own. Chopin Competition Gold Medalist Seong-Jin Cho makes his SF Performances debut and electrifying young keyboard artist Benjamin Grosvenor brings a fiery German and Russian program. Perennial piano favorite Piotr Anderszewski returns with Beethoven and Bach to round out a powerful lineup. This series is sure to satisfy seasoned audiences and thrill newcomers.

Music is a powerful inspiration to connect—with our histories, with each other and with our inner selves. This season’s Chamber Music series maps musical terrain from composers’ reactions to the idea and ideals of America to the scientifically dem-onstrated restorative powers of music, and from the fruits of mutual collaboration to the enduring emotional impact of historical mas-terworks. It’s hard to imagine a greater range of ensembles, including masters of the clas-sics, trail-blazing pioneers of new music, and artists who are redefining the roles of music and musicians for the 21st century.

The award-winning young Dover Quartet, which often balances its pyrotechnic style with programs centered around insightful social commentary, will perform works by 19th and 20th century composers who were inspired by America. Iconoclastic Brooklyn Rider—which NPR credited with “recreating the 300-year-old form of string quartet as a vital and creative 21st-century ensemble.”— delves into the dynamic healing powers of music. SF Performances’ own Alexander String Quartet teams up with pianist Joyce Yang and Bay Area-born composer Samuel Adams for a West Coast premiere. The Elias Quartet returns to SF Performances with three centuries of chamber music.

Formerly called the Vocal Series, we’ve changed the name to reflect our artists’ focus on the elemental power and the intimate story-telling versatility of songs and singing. These artists are more than great performers in their own right. They are accomplished storytellers, singing actors and gifted communicators who capture our atten-tion, move our emotions and make us see ourselves in their words and music.

Every program is a journey, some literal and some metaphorical--from an evening of playful and observant animal songs to the profound and sometimes quirky, reveal-ing endearing explorations of love, life and the world around us. The music throughout the series is an expansive mix of traditional Lieder, jazz with non-traditional accompani-ment, European and American song and even a refreshing bit of British comic relief.

PROGRAM: ETM: Double Down

Celebrating the powerful voices of women in the creation and performance of dance, this season SF Performances presents three companies that energize ballet, tap and contemporary movement with electrifying new meaning and technical daring.

Inspired by input from former and currently serving military, Rosie Kay’s moving 5 Soldiers fuses moments of deeply honest, sometimes humorous and always frank personal experiences to look at the inti-mate training soldiers undertake to prepare for the sheer physicality of combat. Jessica Lang’s work draws equally from modern dance and ballet, transforming and redefining movement with stunning visuals and emo-tional engagement. Dorrance Dance returns to SF Performances with a signature, high-energy work in which the performers use “tap instruments” created by Nicholas Young not only to dance, but to create live music.

Alone, paired up, or five at a time, this series offers some of the world’s greatest musicians who have selected programs of works they are especially passionate about.

Dashing French virtuoso Jean-Guihen Queyras takes a deep dive into Bach’s sub-lime suites for solo cello based on baroque dance forms that swing from moody sara-bandes (banned in Spain in the 1500s!) to galloping gavottes. Powerhouse violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja also has a knack for clever programming as seen in her mostly French offerings here (including Romanian-French transplant George Enescu). Inon Barnatan and the Calidore Quartet bring a spontaneous vibrancy back to Bach with their sensuous interpretations of the baroque master’s keyboard concertos. Teztlaff-Teztlaff-Vogt Trio, led by SF Performances multi-season favorite, Christian Tetzlaff, embodies strong musical bonds between its performers and high-voltage technique.

Whether they’re athletes, chefs, actors, or musicians, everyone loves to say “I saw them long before anyone else . . .” This series presents artists who already have their feet firmly planted along the trail of auspicious music careers. Audiences with a sense of adventure and a desire to hear tomorrow’s greats today can discover some of the world’s fast-rising talent on the SF Performances stage.

Young Turkish vocalist Ilker Arcayürek was voted among the top ten of a “new generation of rising stars” and hailed for his “golden tenor” voice by Opera Now Magazine. Winners of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 2016, the Telegraph Quartet is now in residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where the San Francisco Chronicle called the group “an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape.” Meticulous Swiss fire-brand Francesco Piemontesi was a protegé of legendary pianists Murray Perahia and Alfred Brendel, whom he credits with teach-ing him to “love the detail of things.”

Guitar Series is presented in association with OMNI Foundation for the Performing Arts.

The guitar is a phenomenon that crosses cultures and histories and is as popular in concert halls as it is in coffee houses the world over. It is compelling and comfortable for beginners and yet it is one of the most dif-ficult instruments to master, with challenging technique and heroically difficult repertory. This season’s guitar series presents a range of accomplished artists who are supreme interpreters of music from legendary Spanish and Latin American composers to complex transcriptions of the baroque and Romantic.

PIVOT: Vox Populi – January 2019

Now in its fourth year, this innovative explora-tion of new adventures in the performing arts has become a sold-out success mixing things up and partnering music, dance and spoken word around themes that resonate with today’s audiences. This season zooms in on artists and works with political observations and meanings, shining a light on the power of music as the voice of the people to under-score the urgency of our time.

Singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane mashes up his classical training with folk and pop traditions in witty, wonderful and ear-opening ways. The morning after the 2016 presi-dential election, he set out on an 8,980 mile train trip in an effort to better understand his country. The resulting song cycle, 8980: Book of Travelers offers compassionate portraits of the many strangers he met, as well as a searching inquiry into America’s complex past, present, and future.

Acclaimed Bay Area jazz and cabaret artist Paula West sings about times that are a’changin’ as reflected in the once prophetic, now timeless and newly relevant works of composer/performer/activist Bob Dylan.

Israeli pianist Ran Dank will perform Frederic Rzewski’s 36 variations on the Chilean political song that protested an oppressive government in the 1970s.

Bass-baritone Dashon Burton steps out of his acclaimed role as a classically trained concert and choral artist and member of Roomful of Teeth, to perform what the New York Times called “superb collection of songs and spirituals” and one of the best classical music recordings of 2016.

Alexander String Quartet with Robert Greenberg, host and lecturer

Zakarias Grafilo, violin Frederick Lifsitz, violin Paul Yarbrough, viola Sandy Wilson, cello

SF Performances was an early pioneer of presenting concerts at convenient, non-traditional times in a casual atmosphere that appeals to audiences and fosters a close connection to the artists. The flag-ship of this trailblazing continues to be the tremendously popular Saturday morning series with the Alexander String Quartet and Robert Greenberg.

Together, the five artists and their devoted audiences spend Saturday mornings plumbing the depths of important chamber music composers, their lives and times. The programs feature performances of complete works, preceded by Greenberg’s commentary, which brims with informa-tion, personal glimpses of the composers’ lives, and often humorous details. With Brahms and the Schumanns, the Saturday morning team explore these extraordinary Romantics and Shostakovich 2 continues their look into the 20th century Russian iconoclast.

San Francisco Performances’ popular Family Matinees bring some of the world’s top creators and performers into engaging, entertaining and informative exchanges with younger audiences. Usually about an hour in length, Family Matinees typically feature complete performances with an interactive component—sometimes a Q&A with the artists, sometimes with audience participa-tion—designed to give a deeper glimpse behind and inside what’s on stage. Artists are particularly experienced in communicating with young people, inspiring them to learn more about music and dance.

IN SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Since 1989, San Francisco Performances has taken a unique and intimate approach to arts education in the schools through its Artist-in-Residency Program. In small, hands-on programs, our internationally acclaimed resident artists work directly with students and teachers in Bay Area public schools to enhance understanding and appreciation of the arts. The scope of these residencies reflects our commitment to mak-ing the arts an essential part of everyone’s life by: allowing young people of all backgrounds to experience the joys and excitement of great music and dance; helping to keep arts education accessible to all students; and supporting the professional development of emerging artists and educators.

SATURDAY MORNING SERIES

Music Historian-in-Residence Robert Greenberg and Ensemble-in-Residence Alexander String Quartet bring chamber music to life in these explorations. Each session features Greenberg’s fast-paced, entertaining lectures, complete with live musical illustrations, followed by full perfor-mances of each work by the Alexander String Quartet (see page 28 for details).

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

CONCERTS WITH CONVERSATION

These free and informal gatherings give com-munity members an opportunity to encounter our exceptional mainstage artists up close at the Community Music Center in the Mission District.

FAMILY MATINEES

Audiences of all ages listen and learn together at these one-hour weekend perfor-mances. Family matinees are thoughtfully curated to give multi-generational audiences access to affordable, informal, and interactive experiences with the world’s top music and dance artists—because it’s never too early or too late to become a lover of music and dance!

“Sean is incredibly inspiring. He is very acces-sible and humble and holds the attention of the students in a real and tangible way. Without bells and whistles, he doesn't even have to play much (though when he does, the kids give rapt attention). Sean can relate to the beginning stage of musicianship and his comments about technique as well as artistry are relevant and meaningful to the students.”

—Teacher at Edna Brewer Middle School

Education means engagement and empowerment for audiences of today and tomorrow. Our education programs seek to expand and deepen the arts experience for audiences of all ages.
