From The EDPriscilla EssertExecutive Director

Vintage House: My First Year in Review Just last week, we marked the one-year anniversary of the October 2017 North Bay Wildfires. This catastrophic event is one that none of us will ever forget, yet despite the magnitude of the losses here in Sonoma Valley and across the county, we discovered the power of coming together as one community. One message brought us together: Sonoma Strong—a reminder that we are better together. At Vintage House we embrace this message every day, and we are committed to supporting seniors and creating a welcoming place of belonging and connection for all. As I look back on my first year here at Vintage House, I am excited about all the organization has done to better serve you—our mem-bers—and to create a more inviting space at “the house.” Our lobby is now graced with a beautiful grandfather clock that was donated by long-time Vintage House supporter, Harriett Derwingson, who gifted the clock to us in memory of her husband, Randy, who served on the Vintage House board. Together Randy and Harriett have helped champion Vintage House in our community and we are honored to have their clock in our front lobby to welcome all who enter. As you make your way past the clock and down the hall, you will discover that we now have a rotating art exhibit featuring the work of talented local Sonoma Valley artists. The art on display brings new life to the space and is also for sale, so come down and see our current exhibit and see if there is a piece you just can’t live without! Rolling Out New and Successful Initiatives After the fires, Vintage House conducted broad outreach with se-nior centers across the county to discuss the needs of aging adults, future relationships among the organizations, information sharing, and mutual support. We also talked about the lessons learned, like the need for better emergency preparedness. Out of those discussions, Vintage House, in collaboration with other local organizations, orga-nized and hosted Are You Ready?, a disaster preparedness event de-signed specifically for the senior population. We now understand that if unprepared, the minutes between an event’s onset and the moment no options exist can mean life or death. Experts gathered at the event to inform us about safety, advance preparation, and how to prioritize action. With more than 650 in attendance, Are You Ready? proved to be a timely and informative event. We are grateful to Redwood Credit Union for underwriting the costs of this event and to CSAA for providing 1,000 emergency preparedness bags.

In other new programming news, this summer, in collaboration with Sweetwater Spectrum and other local contributors, Vintage House launched Soup for Seniors. The aim of the program is to create a sense of connection and belonging for seniors who otherwise might feel iso-lated and alone. The weekly no-cost lunch has become a gathering that our growing community of “soupers” have come to look forward to. For so many, it is the only time during the week that they share a meal with others. Soup for Seniors gives those that attend a reason to get out into the community, an opportunity to develop friendships and connection, and guarantees a delicious and nutritious hot bowl of soup, served up with a smile. You Spoke. We Listened. In response to those who wanted more outings, Vin-tage House offered its first annual Spring Garden Tour. It was a well-attended additional benefit for members. In September, we hosted a field trip into San Francisco via the Vallejo Ferry. It was a beautiful day on the Bay and a fun time was had by all. And, for the first time in its 35-year history, Vintage House test-piloted nighttime pro-gramming with Wednesday Evening Out. With more and more seniors continuing to work at least part-time, and with many expressing an interest in having a safe place to gather for entertainment, education, and socialization in the evenings, we piloted the program in September, offer-ing members and the community-at-large multiple activ-ities to choose from concurrently during the three-hour weekly event. The response to the pilot was sensational, and we are committed to raising the funds needed to hire a part-time coordinator to ensure that Wednesday Evening Out returns in the new year. Stay tuned. Finally, recognizing that news was originating nonstop at Vintage House, we launched our weekly eB-last in order to keep our members up to date on all the happenings. The Vintage House Weekly now boasts 3,900 subscribers! We also began to write a regular column on the topic of aging for The Sonoma Valley Sun. Looking Towards the Future of Vintage House Earlier this year, we hosted a number of focus groups with members and with the community at-large. The in-put from participants has helped to shape our priorities now, and as we plan for the future. The value of these focus groups led us to develop a proposal for a research study to evaluate the current and future anticipated needs

of our aging adult community. The data coming out of this study will inform our fundraising and the design of new programs and services to meet the changing needs of local seniors. We are grateful to Impact100 Sonoma for a $20,000 grant towards the support of this study. Reflecting on my first year at Vintage House, I am excited about all that the organization has accomplished in service to its members and our community. With more than 60 instructors and a small paid staff, we are a lean organization that is excitedly looking ahead to the many new offerings we will be introducing in the coming months. Also, in the coming months and in celebration of our 35th anniversary, Vintage House will undergo a “makeover” starting with the reveal of a new, inviting logo by year’s end. Finally, as I look around, I feel proud and grateful to be a part of Vintage House—a vibrant, upbeat commu-nity at the center of new ways of thinking about mature adults. I appreciate every member, every idea, and every bit of the wisdom accumulated over our lifetimes. I look forward to seeing you around the house.

Thanksgiving 2018Better Together

For several years the Sonoma Community Center and Vintage House have each organized free Thanksgiving dinners, serving up a delicious, traditional holiday meal to hundreds of members of the community who may be alone. This year, we are excited to announce that the two organizations are teaming up to co-host one big Thanksgiving feast to be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2018 from 3:00-5:00 p.m.. at Sonoma Veteran’s Memorial Building located at 126 First Street West. We expect this to be the first of a new annual Thanksgiving tradi-tion in Sonoma Valley. This collaboration is another example of “coming together” to build community and a sense of belonging during the holiday season. We hope you’ll join us! For more details, visit www.vintagehouse.org

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and now Giving Tuesday

Vintage House Joins National “Giving Tuesday” Campaign

Seven years ago, the non-profit community in the United States pushed back against tradition-al post-Thanksgiving consumer buying and produced a counter-proposition called Giving Tuesday. Contrasting millions of shoppers fran-tically chasing discounts against contributions to organizations, Giving Tuesday concentrates on giving, from simple acts in home towns to high-dollar gifts by large donors. Created by the Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, Giving Tuesday (#GivingTuesday) connects widely diverse people and causes for one purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving. Beller Center has brought people together around the ideas of values and community service since 1874. A hardworking team of founding partners and influencers volunteered professional expertise, enthusiasm, and energy, and in 2012 launched the movement to coincide with annual year-end fundraising campaigns by nonprofit organizations.

The idea took off. Last year, Giving Tuesday involved 100 community coalitions in 150 coun-tries. With the slogan “What if the entire world came together to give?” the idea took only five years to raise $300,000,00. That’s 300 million dollars. The global movement was supported by The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, PayPal, and other large corporations. The idea is largely communicated by social media and word-of-mouth, and further supported by traditional ad-vertising. The team of “influencers” collaborated across all business sectors for a uniquely powerful new force in social philanthropy. This year, Vintage House will participate in Giving Tuesday for the first time. We are proud to become a part of this important effort. Stay tuned to our weekly eBlast starting in November to learn how you can support Vintage House on Giving Tuesday, November 27, a National Day of Giving.
