An opportunity for children and youth to:• Discover and utilize their God-given talents within the context of music and worship
leadership. • Receive encouragement and nurture as they develop skills necessary to become not
only our future worship and church music leadership, but also to become active participants in a meaningful worship experience.
• Experience singing and making music with others outside of their own surroundings who also enjoy singing.
• Experience the joy of preparing, learning and performing more challenging music.• Experience singing as a ministry to others both within and outside of their own
congregation.• Develop more faithful musicianship in their own choirs.

through their Minister of Music, Music Director, or Pastor.• Participants must be in grades 4-12 or a college freshmen in the current school year.• Participants must attend and be involved in at least 75% of their own choir’s
rehearsals. If the church does not have any organized choir program, members may be selected from those attending Sunday School at least 75% of the time.
• Participants must be enthusiastic, faithful, and able to match pitch.• Participants will be responsible for learning the music before the final concert. All
music will be performed by memory. Music for all pieces will be provided and a practice CD will be sent to each participant.
• Each church should be prepared to send at least one adult sponsor for every three children nominated.

2018 All-State Choirs Audition Procedures
Auditions for the 2018 All-State Choirs will be accepted on CD or by mp3 or wav files via email. A CD is preferred, but please examine all CDs before mailing to check for quality and to see that they are finalized for play on other machines. Those students currently in grades 4–8 or grade 10 through College Freshmen who participated in the 2017 All-State Choirs must submit a completed application form but do NOT have to submit a recorded audition this year. All students currently in grade 9 must submit a completed application form AND a recorded audition, even if they participated in the 2017 All-State Choirs.
For best audition results:• Please place the microphone so that the voice is the predominant sound on the
recording.
• Please conduct the audition in the order indicated below.
1. Have the student speak slowly and clearly and announce their name, church, age, what voice part they sing in their choir and current grade level. If the student has participated in previous Virginia Baptist All-State Choirs, please have the student state that as well.
2. Sing stanza 1 of “My Country ‘tis of Thee (America)” or “Happy Birthday” with or without accompaniment in each of the 2 keys listed for each song (see below). If the student finds the key uncomfortable, please have them try to sing the song the best that they can in the indicated key without making any changes in pitch or octave. This part of the process is simply to indicate the student’s vocal range while singing a song and will not be viewed as the sole indicator of their ability. The voice should remain prominent on the recording. Please have the student sing in both keys and do not substitute any key for the ones indicated below.
For those auditioning in grade 9 and for all auditioning for the Mixed Choir, have them sing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” “Amazing Grace,” or “Holy, Holy, Holy” in their specific voice part, in the key used in the hymnal, to piano accompaniment on the audition tape.
3. Sing one stanza of one song from the following list. The song may be sung with or without accompaniment. Please be sure that the voice remains prominent on the recording if any accompaniment is used.
a. “Jesus Loves Me”b. “Open the Eyes of My Heart””c. “Fairest Lord Jesus”d. “O Come, All Ye Faithful”
