Background and aims

The Investigate: bees science and technology competition is an initiative of the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The competition is open to all NSW Stage 3 students and teachers.

The aim of the competition is to stimulate an interest in science, technology and agriculture in young people and to promote the teaching of these subject areas in schools.

Students will design and complete an investigation and create a portfolio of work that aligns with outcomes from the NSW Science and Technology, English and Geography syllabuses. (See Investigate: bees teachers handbook and learning sequence for syllabus outcomes).

The 2018 Investigate competition focuses on bees. Most students have heard about the plight of bees and the important role that they play in our environment and in food production. This investigation encourages students to take their knowledge a bit deeper and to take action to support bees - both honey bees and Australian native bees.

Bees face some serious biosecurity threats from diseases and pests including introduced bee species that could out-compete our native bees and insects or honey bees.

This year's investigation encourages students to find out which insects are currently visiting their gardens and what they can do to help bees - so that they can help us! Students who completed Investigate last year considered the role of beneficial insects in controlling aphids – a common pest insect. Bees provide important ecosystem and production services so this year we are looking at how to support bees including native bees.

Investigate provides authentic learning experiences to support students’ development of science, technology and communication skills. Real-world content guides the application of these skills in a meaningful learning context. By participating in the Investigate competition students will understand that science plays an important role in their lives every day.

Read the competition guide and judging criteria. This guide will support you in preparing and submitting your competition entry to give you the best chance in the competition.

Complete the activities described in the teacher guide. Investigate: bees will involve your students in

Awards and prizes

• All entries will be recognised with a certificate.

• All prizes are awarded at the judges’ discretion.

• We will judge multiple portfolios but schools are only be eligible for one prize each year.

Safety and ethical considerations

Safety policies are of particular relevance to the activities in this unit. Students and their supervising teachers or parents should ensure that their science investigations are conducted in a responsible and safe manner. It is essential that student activities are conducted according to procedures developed through appropriate risk assessments at the school – particularly if you are aware of students with allergies to insect stings and bites.

Teachers should implement the following safety guidelines:

• No insects should be collected or handled

• Correct cleaning and hygiene practices are followed prior to and following field work.

• It is expected that bees and other stinging/biting insects will be detected in the course of the investigation and the possibility of a student being bitten should be prepared for. For further advice go to https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/insect-bites-and-stings

What should I do if I get stung?

Apply ice to relieve the swelling and pain. Gently wash the area with soap and water and leave any blisters intact. People who experience an allergic reaction after a bee sting should seek medical attention immediately.

Preparing your entryThis year the competition will be judged on a portfolio of work. The portfolio al-lows you to submit work from a range of students and allows your students various strengths to be recognised. You can submit several portfolios or choose the best sections from a range of students and submit them as one portfolio. The portfolio is to include:• Love Food? Love Bees reflection

• Research forms

• Observation records

• Discussion of results

• Plan for school garden/grounds

• The Honey Game reflection

• Community action

• Evaluation

Check the judging criteria to see what we are looking for in each of the portfolio items. Ideally students will design the investigation to ensure that it is appropriate to your school and context. However for the purposes of judging a competition we need your entry to include specific content. We have provided sample forms and survey sheets but if you have time your class can develop their own versions – as long as in the end students are able to demonstrate their learning towards the aim of the competition (which is clearly defined in the judging criteria/rubric) and that you include the things that we need to see to be able to judge your entry.

Your portfolio may be presented using any of the formats listed, or a combination of these:• Hard copy

• Electronic files (compatible with Microsoft software)

• Digital formats (please make sure any usernames and/or passwords required to access your work are supplied)

• Video
