Supporting tennis locally to grow the game
Introduction / Chairman’s Highlights of the Year – Chris Major
We have re-introduced county training, energetically managed by Justin Sherring and overseen by the Performance
Committee, led by Doug Clare. Tina Sawyer Smith has taken responsibility for leading the generation of sponsorship income
– vital for sustaining our increasing expenditure. Our competitions programme, managed by Lewis Woodham (who also
runs our expanding social media presence) and steered by the Competitions Committee chaired by Terry Oakes, continues
to be the envy of other counties. Tim Sagar, Tennis Development Manager, has done excellent work building on the recent
establishment of the Surrey Coaches Association and promoting disability tennis. And Joy Jackson has stepped down as
chair of our Venues & Communications Committee, which has organised some stimulating and well attended events for
our members, to be replaced by Deborah Hamlin. It was also great to see so many award winners at the ceremony we held
in February, thanks to the office and the Awards Committee led by David Lovejoy.
Treasurer’s Report – Derek Howorth
Thanks to the financial support we have received from our Sponsors the County’s activities and expenditure
continue to increase. The 2018 expenditure amounted to £383k compared to £332k in 2017. This has resulted in a
deficit for the year of £19k. The successful re-introduction of Junior County Training and taking on a County
Performance Manager cost £34k and there was a £29k increase in the cost of other County staff. All nine of our
Junior County teams reached the final week-end of their event and this success led to a large increase in the costs
of £21k. As a consequence we are having to look carefully at our costs to identify possible savings. The Balance
Sheet is still very strong with cash of £540k.
LTA Councillor – Roy Staniland
We welcomed our new CEO to The Lawn Tennis Association this year, Scott Lloyd. He certainly has a great tennis
background and has been extremely successful in business. Along with a new CEO comes a new strategy and one
which will help to encourage more players into the game.
It is also great to see County Training back and Justin Sherring, Chris Risebro and Debbie Slater have done a
fantastic job organizing venues, players and coaches. My thanks also go to the many coaches who have given so
much enthusiasm and hard work into their role as County Coach.
2018 Report of Council
It’s been another eventful year for Surrey Tennis. At the time of writing, the final
outcome of the 2018 County Cup Race hangs in the balance, but at our year-end we
led the field. Come to the AGM for an update! Our thanks go to all the captains,
coaches, managers, players and administrators who have contributed so much. To
name names would be invidious, but here goes.
We say a grateful (but partial) farewell on her retirement to Chris Risebro who has
done so much to keep Surrey Tennis ahead of the game. Chris’ replacement,
Deborah Slater, will find her a hard act to follow. Another will be Derek Howorth,
who lays down his abacus as our Treasurer at this AGM, to be replaced by his
“shadow” – Ed Coombs.

Safeguarding is a very important area that we are all very committed to and we are hoping that most Clubs/venues will
have managed to get their Safeguarding Officers in place by the deadline. It is also important that we continue to discuss
this throughout the year and the Committees / Officers of the Clubs and Venues have this as an item on their agendas and
help spread the information to all at their facilities.
The IT systems are going through a huge change at the LTA and I know it has been a frustrating year, but there is light at the
end of the tunnel. The investment in this area is huge and I hope we will all see the benefit over the next twelve months.
If any of you have any points or questions that you would like raised at The LTA, please do contact me. ([email protected])

County Cup Overview – see captains’ report for additional details.
At time of writing, the Winter County Cup competition is yet to be played, come to the AGM to hear the latest
results.
Our thanks go to all our County Cup Captains for the huge amount of work and commitment made to our County
teams.
For the first time in a number of years, our Junior County Cup
teams went into the 2018 season following the re-introduction
of Surrey County training. It was excellent to see the hard work
reaping rewards with 6 out of 6 teams qualifying from their
groups and reaching the National finals.
A special mention to the 18U boys, who were crowned Division 1
winners and national champions back in February which means
back to back 18U Division 1 titles for Surrey!
This Summer’s County Week saw our Men’s and
Ladies’ teams compete in separate locations. The
Women remained in Eastbourne (Division 1) and
following relegation in 2017, the Men tackled Division
2 in Cromer. Despite a notable lack of County Week
experience amongst the women, they managed to find
an incredible team spirit and finished the week as
Division 1 winners and National Champions! The men
put in a valiant effort against some high quality
opposition and finished 3rd in their group. We are
extremely proud of the efforts from all of our players.

SE 16U Team Trophy – Caroline Jordan & Mark Siddall
On the 9th and 10th June, two Surrey 16&Under teams played in the inaugural 16U SE Team Trophy held at Surbiton Rackets
and Fitness Club on the Fuzion 100 Surbiton Trophy Finals weekend. The four south east counties took part (Kent,
Middlesex, Surrey & Sussex) with the girl’s tournament on Saturday and the boys on the Sunday. Matches took
place on the grass courts that had been in use for the Fuzion 100 event. The format was a mix of singles and
doubles, with 42 players, all aged 15 and 16 taking part over the weekend. 48 rubbers were played with 2661
minutes of match time! There was great feedback on the tournament, the players said how good it was to feel
part of a pro event and the spectators enjoyed being able to watch more tennis when they were visiting the
catering area or walking around the site.
The girl’s team - Danielle Hack, Cheyenne Joyce- Borg, Victoria Subev and Sally Petheridge, were so excited to be
part of a Surrey team. The girls competed solidly for over 4 hours, the atmosphere was amazing and Surrey and
Sussex were neck and neck until the last singles match was played. Surrey came a very close second. The boy’s
team of Jorge Beltrao, Harry Hewing, David Middleton and Jamie Forest were equally pleased to be invited to play. They
thoroughly enjoyed the day, playing and learning lots about competing on the grass. Great commitment was shown by
players, parents and coaches.
Caroline Jordan, captain of the girls team reports: “It was great to see the 16U age group able to represent and
compete for their County once again. With so many spectators at Surbiton, the matches were well supported and
a lovely addition to both events. A totally amazing day to be a part of.”

Seniors Tennis Overview – Mark Staniszewski
Of our 14 Seniors’ County teams, 9 have reached the County Finals at Dudley at the end of November. By the time
we get to the AGM, we’ll know who’s won! Over the summer, each team plays 5 matches in their Division. The
winners of Divisions 1A and 1B progress to the finals.
Our Ladies’ teams were outstanding and only lost 1 out of 35 rubbers played, the only loss being in a Ladies’ 60s
match where winning the league was already assured. The teams won 57 of the 70 matches played. Next year we
shall have all 14 teams in Division 1 as the Ladies’ 50s won Division 2A to achieve promotion.

Sponsors - Tina Sawyer-Smith
The income that comes from the County’s many sponsors, donors and patrons is spent wholly each year in
developing tennis in the County. This includes, but is not limited to: supporting our clubs and venues with grants,
loans and discounted equipment; providing junior county training, clothing, player funding, coach support and
education; supporting the County teams and the Surrey County Championships. The challenge in maintaining our
income is increasingly difficult and we are looking at ways to both maximise this and also to generate a real return
on investment.

Venue Registration
As at the 30th September, 2018, 201 venues were registered.
The new Minimum Standard Requirements has made this a challenging year for venue registration, especially identifying and training Welfare Officers. In order to support our clubs to meet these requirements, Surrey Tennis ran a number of free Welfare Officer Training workshops. The council applauds the efforts put in by venues to meet the requirements aimed at providing a safer environment for tennis players across the county.
Remember, for venues to continue to benefit from the LTA Insurance coverage and to be eligible for the Wimbledon ticket allocations on-line registration must be completed by the 30th November 2018 and payment received by 25th January 2019.

Surrey Venue Support
Surrey Tennis provides the following practical and financial venue support activities:
discussion between attendees, as well as feedback for both Surrey Tennis and the LTA. Our aim for 2019 is to get
more venues being represented at the meetings. Surrey Tennis wants to ensure that topics at the meetings
continue to be relevant and we will be taking feedback from the work we do with venues throughout the year.
Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW) Follow on Offer of racquets and a £200 coaching subsidy towards courses run for new members recruited at GBTW events.
Tournament Administration Subsidies of £300 to all Surrey Grade 3 & 4 sanctioned tournaments running over a minimum of five days which include at least five junior age group events.
Welfare Officer Training – several events were held around the County to support the new LTA Venue Registration Minimum Standards.

GDPR Workshop - In the latter part of 2017 – one topic that came out of the Autumn Venue Forums was how venues were going to deal with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Due to the impact of GDPR on venues and the demand for further information, we held a workshop in January 2018 that was presented by Morrisons Solicitors. Content included: the key principles of GDPR; processing children’s data and new data subject rights. We hope the workshop helped venues in their efforts to be GDPR compliant.
Disability Tennis Overview – Tim Sagar
Through the combined efforts of Surrey venues, coaches and
volunteers, the provision of disability tennis has increased in 2018,
with 9 venues reporting over 150 people taking part in weekly
sessions and 330 playing monthly. The Surrey County Championships
included Wheelchair Tennis and in September, Surrey hosted the
Regional Visually Impaired Tournament.
Surrey Tennis hosted 4 venue forums across the County in early October. 59 venues
were represented across the 4 meetings. Topics for the meetings included
Safeguarding/LTA minimum standards, floodlight/court resurfacing updates,
disability tennis, County training and Surrey competitions. We also had a member of
the South East LTA team presenting the LTA national update. This gave venues a
first glimpse of the new strategy from CEO Scott Lloyd, as he launched the vision
“Tennis Opened Up”. All topics discussed prompted useful

Surrey County Indoor Tennis Centre
The Surrey County Indoor Tennis Centre, located at St. George’s College, Weybridge, is now in its twenty-fourth year. The County has a joint venture agreement with the College who manage the Centre on a day to day basis, including the three clay courts.
The County’s court time at the Indoor Tennis Centre at St George’s College is leased to an independent performance club – Weybridge Tennis Academy, run by its Head Coach, Justin Sherring. The Academy facilitates positive links, communication and support with surrounding affiliated clubs, coaches and performance players.
Schools – Mary Harper
Surrey School Tennis (from the ages of 7 & 8 to 18 years) is flourishing this year with many more schools playing matches during the Winter and Summer. Ewell Castle and Epsom College are in the Semi-Finals of Surrey’s 15&U Mixed Event. Schools are also currently playing in Surrey’s 18& Competition Festivals – with 20 or more schools each day. The Girls’ Festival is the most popular. On those days, the Jean Thirwall Sportsmanship Awards are presented, with the 2018 Boys’ Award going to Graveney School, Tooting and the Girls’ Award shared by Manor House School, Little Bookham and Croydon High School, Croydon. An increased number of schools ran Road to Wimbledon events.
The 2018 Branston Shield Winners were Surbiton High School for Girls who beat Guildford High School, while the Rootham Shield Winners were Reeds School who beat St. George’s College in a close, exciting Final. A questionnaire has been sent to all schools to decide the future format and timing on these two 18U events.
The DC Jones Cup and the George Worthington Cup are awarded annually to the Surrey schools making the furthest progress in the Aberdare Cup and Glanville Cup Competitions respectively, which this year were Surbiton High School (seventh place) and Reeds School (third place).
Surrey School Tennis gets good, helpful support from the Surrey Schools Committee - the only remaining county committee in the country, increased and excellent help from Lewis in the Surrey Tennis Office, and the LTA who give online support and run events.
County Training
Reintroduced in Surrey in Autumn 2017, County Training in 2018 has been expanded further. In 2018, over 35 Coaches, 250 Players and 7 Venues have been involved in County Training. The LTA Player Development Pathway asks Counties to identify their 8 top players in each age group and gender to receive County Training. Due to the number of talented juniors in Surrey, from September 2018 we have extended our numbers from 8 to 12 in the older age groups and to 16 for the younger ages. With so many good players in the 12 & Under and 14 & Under groups, we have extended them
The Surrey Coaches Group continues to support around
150 coaches across the county. In 2018, three coaches’
education events were run: Performance Standards and
County Training; Wheelchair Tennis Workshop; and GB
Doubles Tactics with Louis Cayer. Additionally, at the
request of members, 2 First Aid courses and a Part 1 Safe-
guarding course were also run. Requests or ideas for 2019
events can be sent to [email protected]

even further – with 30 boys in training in each of those age groups. We are also offering County Training for the 16 & Unders – giving us 17 different groups attending around 1 session a month. Including reserves to fill out our sessions we have over 250 children being invited to attend County Training sessions.
Surrey Patrons – Peter Lane
The Surrey Patrons scheme was formed 50 years ago and it continues to flourish, having grown in size from 29 members originally to almost 1,000 today. The scheme supports tennis in the County, with particular reference to the advancement of juniors through the new Performance Programme. Members are able to participate in various social events and a ballot for Wimbledon Tickets.
The membership is currently full and there is a waiting list for entry in January 2019. The number of new members that can be admitted will depend on vacancies occurring once the subscriptions fall due. Any new applicants wishing their names to be placed on the waiting list should request an application form from Peter Lane ([email protected]).

Junior Trust
The Junior Trust was set up in 1983 with a donation from the late Vernon Ely’s Charitable Settlement. Further annual donations have been received from this Settlement plus grant aid payments from the County Association. The trust is a registered charity and now has assets of £486,000 invested. The income generated from the trust fund has and will be distributed as small grants to talented junior players to assist in their tennis development. In 2018, the trustees awarded £23,250 in grants to 45 junior players.
County Loan Fund
The County has generated substantial cash reserves over the years. These reserves have been made available to
fund interest free loans to Registered Venues to assist in the development of facilities. The maximum size of loan
would normally be £20,000 and priority will be given to developments that would not attract LTA funding. To date
loans of £281,000 have been made and £185,000 is outstanding.
The Surrey Team
We have a dedicated Surrey Tennis office team employing three full time and one part-time member. Early in 2018,
Deborah Slater joined the team in order to have a really good hand over period as Chris Risebro slowly reduced her number
of days before retiring from all office work in September. Chris continues supporting the County Treasurer and the Office
Team working part-time from home while Debbie has picked up most of the general administration work. Tim Sagar
(Tennis Development Manager) supports the county’s inclusion aims through Disability Tennis, Venue Support and Schools,
whilst also supporting the County’s coaches via the provision of the Surrey Coaches Group. Lewis Woodham (Competitions
and Social Media Manager) completes the team, looking after all things competition – such as the Wilson Leagues and
Team Tennis for adults and juniors and supporting our County Cup team captains with administration. Lewis is also the
driving force behind our Social Media presence.
Justin Sherring (County Performance Manager) co-ordinates and manages the provision of County training and
County Cup teams, building relationships with coaches and clubs enabling the identification and progression of
junior players from across the County.

Venues & Communications Committee
Report 2018
AGM
As last year’s AGM venue was deemed a success, it has been re- booked for this year, at the Wimbledon Club on
6th December.
GPDR
The Committee organised a seminar on GPDR at the National Tennis Centre in January. This was presented by
Morrisons Solicitors and was well attended. It was recognised that this was a useful thing to have done as it
raised some important issues of which some clubs would have been unaware.
Tennis in Surrey
A survey conducted by the Committee has shown there was insufficient awareness of the magazine amongst its
target audience. The Council decided that it would be provided as an on-line publication from 2018.
Subsequently it was re-named Surrey.Tennis 2017/2018 and can now be read on the Surrey website. Since its
online launch it has been viewed by more than 780 people with awards, the rebranding process and the first aid
course pages attracting the most coverage. It seems an ideal opportunity for us to enlist the help of Henman
Communications to drive players and clubs/venues in the county to provide content not only for social media but
also for regular newsletters that would be hosted on the website rather than having just one annual review.
Assigned Clubs
All Committee members have been assigned a number of Surrey Clubs so they can act as an extra point of contact
to try and assist with problems the clubs may have. These members were in contact with their respective clubs
prior to the registration period pointing out the new registration requirements, particularly with regard to
safeguarding and the appointment of a suitably qualified Welfare Officer.
Cluster Meetings
Four Cluster Meetings were held in September/October and concentrated on various topics including:
Safeguarding and the impact of LTA Minimum Standards for Venues, and developments in court resurfacing and
floodlights. County Training and Surrey Competitions. 59 venues were represented across the four meetings.
Social Media
Surrey.Tennis has continued to be active across social media platforms throughout the year and followers and
engagements are trending upwards. Watch out for some exciting new developments in the year ahead as we are
planning some exciting activities to encourage more interaction with coaches, players and parents throughout the
County. Don’t forget to encourage your club and members to follow us!

Commercial Committee
Report 2018
Sponsors, Donors and Patrons:
The County is very fortunate in having many sponsors, donors and patrons who have given their support
throughout the year. This includes supporting our clubs and venues, junior county training, competitions, County
teams, player funding, coach support and education, facility grants and loans, County clothing, equipment,
disability tennis and grass roots initiatives, to name but a few! Basically getting people of all ages, abilities, gender
and backgrounds playing tennis.
We have lost some major sponsors this year, mostly due to changes in government rules relating to anti-bribery
legislation that has made companies more cautious. There is also the “Brexit” cloud that continues to influence
budgets and spending. However, we have been able to bring some new sponsors on board and negotiated longer
contracts to ensure future income and support of our programmes.
Surrey Tennis would like to thank our major sponsors - Abbey Leisure, DM Management, Ibstock plc, Inflexion
Private Equity Partners, Brickability, TowelRads, Irish Cement, Brownlie and The Wilson Sporting Goods Company,
for their support. A special mention and thanks should also go to Peter Duckworth, Christopher Banks, Robert
Ballantyne and the Ooman family for their generous donations. Surrey Tennis would also like to recognise and
thank The LTA and The AELTC for their continued invaluable support.
Volunteers:
This County income is not achieved without the volunteers who work tirelessly to generate Sponsorship for the
County. Grateful thanks must in particular go to Peter and Mary Lane, as well as to Roy Staniland, Derek Howorth,
Glenda Lamden, the Patrons committee and Chris Riseboro who supports us all in the County office.
Fans, New Sponsors:
We are also keen on “Fan” engagement and encouraging supporters to attend events within the County where
either we may have negotiated discounts for Surrey Club members as part of our Commercial programme, or
there is free entry! This year, this has included the “Gant Championships” at the Roehampton Club and the
“Fusion 100 Surbiton Trophy” at Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club, as well as other Surrey supported events such
as the Cranleigh Tennis Festival and of course the Surrey County Closed.
There are many ways that a sponsor can see a return on their investment and we are always looking to discuss
this with companies to deliver shared objectives. The fact that Surrey Tennis has approximately 60,000 British
Tennis members, 203 clubs and venues can be a significant attraction.
Strategy:
The Commercial Committee has put in place a new sponsorship and commercial strategy for 2018 to 2021, in line
with the overall Surrey Tennis strategy that can shortly be viewed on the Surrey Tennis website.

The Performance Committee led by Doug Clare, consists of Tina Smith, David Lovejoy, Alison Taylor, Matt Healy

Welcome To Surrey Tennis Days were introduced in March with two main aims. Firstly, to introduce ourselves as
an organised, friendly and passionate local organisation, keen to support and assist as many young ‘tennis crazy’
kids and their parents as possible and secondly to try and identify some of the more talented U8 year olds who
could shape the first U8 County Training sessions. At our September WTSTD players were indeed selected for
sessions and these have been taking place at Sutton Tennis Academy on Saturday afternoons.
Junior County Cups 2018 had a familiar feel with all of our teams winning their respective Stage 1 events, where
applicable, and our U18 Boys winning the National Title.
Surrey is currently leading the LTA County Cup Race, all of this year’s results can be accessed here:

County Training has continued to be a welcomed and successful
addition to the performance landscape in Surrey. With the
addition of U8/U9/U11 Girls and U13 Boys sessions, there are
now a total of 260 spaces for players U8 – U18 across both
genders. We are using St George’s College, David Lloyd Purley,

Competition Committee
Report 2018
The focus for 2018 was to improve the experience that clubs and players were receiving through our competitions. The aim was to provide a more quality experience for juniors and adults competing. Two key areas were addressed, league tennis ruling and junior competitions. The information and guidelines provided to clubs and team captains have been improved by the introduction of the ‘Captains Guide Version 2’ which includes a number of new key rules. Junior tennis has gone through a review and some key changes made to who the events are aimed at and a greater focus being placed on team events through the winter.
