Considerations for Proper Testing
When testing McAfee software, please consider the following:
1. After installing and activating, please check for updates. This will
also verify that you are running the latest available build.
2. McAfee consumer products are designed to protect consumers in
home and home office environments. Some features may function
differently, or not at all, in corporate environments or on virtual
PCs (e.g. the parental controls and home networking features).
3. The technologies within the product are intended to work in
concert with each other rather than as stand-alone protections.
Therefore, we respectfully request that features be tested
collectively (not individually). For example, the integrated firewall
relies on the real-time, anti-virus and anti-spyware protection to
help protect against malicious programs. McAfee does not offer
the firewall as a stand-alone product. We ask that you do not turn
off one protection to isolate another.
4. For malware testing, the McAfee Next Gen AV Engine requires a live
internet connection to provide instant threat updates. Testing the
product without a live internet connection in a lab environment
may result in the product failing to detect and remediate threats
that would have been addressed in the real world.
5. Comparing McAfee consumer products to competitors can be
difficult, as McAfee often includes more features with its default
installation. When comparing McAfee to competitors, we ask that
you compare like products that are running the same protections.

2018 McAfee Consumer Line-Up
- At a Glance
In June 2017 McAfee Labs published its Q2 2017 Threat Report (link) and
some of the highlights from this report are:
New threats: In Q1 2017, there were 244 new threats every
minute, or more than four every second
Ransomware: Total ransomware grew 59% in the past four
quarters to 9.6 million samples. This growth is primarily due to
Congur ransomware attacks on Android OS devices
Mobile malware: Total mobile malware grew 79% in the past four
quarters to 16.7 million samples
Mac malware: Total Mac OS malware samples grew 53% in Q1
2017
The Threat Report clearly shows that malware not only continues to grow,
but also has become more sophisticated on all platforms. Last year we saw
strong growth with regards to zero day exploits and polymorphic malware
such as ransomware. This meant that we needed to evolve our technology
as traditional signature based anti-virus does not protect the user against
all the sophisticated threats that currently exist.
Thus, we introduced our Next Gen AV engine with cloud-based, machine
learning technology called Real Protect. This technology has now been
rolled out to our users and we expect to see results in public tests from
anti-malware test labs such as AV Test and AV Comparatives to start
appearing by the end of this year.

With this year’s release, we continue our investment in new technologies
to increase consumer protection by bringing part of our cloud-based Real
Protect to the PC. This way when users are offline they will also have
protection from the newest malware threats, even before their security
product has been updated with new anti-malware signatures.
We have also added ransomware removal to our mobile security for
Android devices as well as a host of other innovations and enhancements
to ensure the best possible protection for our mobile users.
Additionally, we have focused on improving the user experience on all
platforms – PC, Mac and mobile as we understand that for users to install
security and keep it activated on their devices, it is key they are fully satisfied
with the product.
The enhanced user experience being introduced this year is a complete
redesign of the user interface on PC, Mac and mobile devices. This new
look and feel will not only enhance the overall user experience but will also
be much more engaging for the user.
In summary, McAfee Antivirus, McAfee Antivirus Plus, McAfee Internet
Security, McAfee Total Protection and McAfee LiveSafe service now offer
more protection against the latest and most sophisticated threats and
feature a fully-revamped user experience.

McAfee 2018 Product Highlights
Highlights of this year’s release are grouped in three categories: Customer
Centricity, Anti-Malware Effectiveness and Cross Device Innovations.
Customer Centricity
ENHANCED Faster Installation - With this year’s release users will
experience a faster download and installation when installing
security on their PC. The total download size has been decreased
significantly and thus the download and installation time has been
reduced by half
NEW User Console on PC and Mac devices – All McAfee 2018
security suites now have a completely redesigned user interface on
both Windows and Mac devices. This new interface offers a more
intuitive and easier user experience. To further increase
engagement, the product contains an Action Center that shows
what the product has been doing as well as what users can do
themselves
NEW Engagement cards on iOS devices – The user experience on
iOS devices has also been redesigned. To further enhance the
experience, user engagement cards have been added. These cards
will automatically appear based on certain trigger points and notify
the user when attention is needed
Anti-Malware Effectiveness
NEW McAfee Real Protect – Static on the PC - With this year’s release
we are further enhancing our Next Gen AV Engine with Real Protect:
McAfee Real Protect Static on the PC. This means that the Real
Protect scanner, the machine learning models, etc. now live on the
PC and thus, the technology that we introduced in 2016 can now
work without relying on a Cloud lookup and can be used in the rare
occasion when users encounter an unknown suspicious file while
offline

Security as a Service
McAfee regularly releases new security features and functionality and
distributes these to all active McAfee subscribers.
All existing subscribers with an active subscription to a McAfee consumer
security suite automatically receive the latest releases as silent upgrades
to their McAfee subscription. These upgrades are pro-actively downloaded
and applied in the background without requiring user interaction.
NOTE: To ensure continuous protection, McAfee does auto-renew
subscriptions. Users who do not wish to be auto-renewed can turn Auto-
Renewal off for their subscriptions via the “My Account” area on the McAfee
website:
https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/AutoRenew.aspx
Free 24/7 Support
The McAfee consumer security suites come with free 24/7 support. Users
can reach support via a streamlined procedure using live-chat and phone
contact options.
The support experience has been enhanced via a widget, which is available
to users as part of each tab in the security management console. The
widget contains links to frequently asked questions, online chat and phone
support. In addition, the widget provides links to the user’s subscriptions,
auto-renewal settings and profile.

Virus and Malware Protection
Antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-malware – Scans and blocks dangerous
emails, risky web content and online threats like viruses, Trojans, spyware
and rootkits.
Real-time Safeguards – If something new looks suspicious, McAfee® Active
Protection™ technology immediately determines its risk using McAfee
Global Threat Intelligence (McAfee GTI) for instant threat intelligence file
lookups.
McAfee Next Gen AV Engine with Real Protect – A cloud-based, machine
learning technology which is part of the McAfee Next Gen AV Engine and
designed to proactively unmask, classify and block so-called zero-day
malware - malware that is designed to evade traditional defenses using
polymorphism, packing and encryption.
NEW McAfee Real Protect Static on the PC – With this year’s release, we
further enhanced our Next Gen AV Engine with Real Protect. ‘McAfee Real
Protect Static on the PC’ means that the Real Protect static scanner, the
machine learning models, etc. now live on the PC and are used there.
Vulnerability Scanner – When Windows or other applications are out of date,
the PC is vulnerable to security threats that can compromise a user’s PC
and personal data. Vulnerability Scanner finds and installs the latest
updates for Windows and all popular applications, so a user’s PC stays safe
and up to date.
Two-way Firewall – Protects against leaks and leak detection apps.
Netguard Anti-Bot Protection – McAfee Firewall’s Netguard further leverages
McAfee GTI to learn if desired IP destinations are dangerous, and identifies
and blocks connections that are risky and possibly related to botnet
activity. This extra layer of defense helps prevent a user’s computer from
sending out personal information to internet crime networks.
Safe Searching and Shopping – McAfee’s advanced web protection software,
McAfee WebAdvisor, puts color-coded icons next to search results to let
users know before they click which sites are safe and which sites may
install malicious code, phish for a user’s identity or send spam.

Protection Against Viruses and Malware
ENHANCED McAfee Next Gen AV Engine with Real Protect
McAfee PC Security includes our McAfee Next Gen AV Engine with Real
Protect which ensures further performance and detection gains especially
with regards to polymorphic and zero-day malware such as ransomware.
If a suspicious file cannot be definitively convicted via the local antivirus
scanner and the cloud GTI reputation database, then a Real Protect
assessment is triggered.
This means that Real Protect will look at the static and dynamic features of
the suspicious file by creating a so-called process trace. This way Real
Protect records what the file is doing, what changes it makes on the PC –
including registry edits, file changes, and sub-process creations. A report
of the behavior is sent to McAfee GTI, where Real Protect uses advanced
machine-learning to compare the static and dynamic features and
behavior to that of known malware. In other words, Real Protect detects
malware in real-time based on how it dynamically behaves and not how it
appears in the file system. This is like having a virtual anti-malware
researcher on your PC.
The comparison results are send to the PC in real-time and if the suspicious
file is indeed malicious it will be stopped. With help from Real Protect a
zero-day malware has then been unmasked and will be removed from the
PC and remediation will occur.

With the introduction of McAfee Next Gen AV Engine with Real Protect,
McAfee consumer security products now have three stages of protection
1) Local Signature Based Detection (DAT)
When a file comes to the PC it is first scanned and compared against
information in the local anti-virus signature database which contains
information on all most prevalent threats.
2) Cloud Signature Based and Reputation Analysis
If there is no match with the local database then a real-time cloud lookup
in the McAfee Global Threat Intelligence database is conducted. Here the
file signature is compared against our cloud database of known malware
and known whitelisted files as well as against our reputation database.
3) McAfee Real Protect
If there is still no match then a Real Protect assessment is triggered and
using machine learning even the most sophisticated zero-day threats and
ransomware can be detected.
To reduce performance impact on the PC, the McAfee Next Gen AV Engine
puts the sophisticated analysis and classification capabilities of Real
Protect Dynamic on the McAfee GTI Cloud which provides the opportunity
for better detection without affecting performance.
NEW McAfee Real Protect Static on the PC – With this year’s release the Real
Protect static scanner, the machine learning models, etc. live on the PC and
are used there. This way the technology that we introduced in 2016 can
also work without relying on a Cloud lookup and as such can be used in the
rare occasion when users encounter a suspicious file while offline.

Vulnerability Scanner With Vulnerability Scanner, users no longer have to wait to be notified
when a Windows or program update is available. Vulnerability Scanner
finds them first and installs them automatically.
Here is how it works:
1. Vulnerability Scanner first checks for potential security issues in
Windows files and installed programs.
2. It then scans for software updates to repair any vulnerable
Windows files and programs. After scanning, it provides a detailed
scan report that shows the number of updates found, and a
description of each update.
3. Depending on the type of scan run, Vulnerability Scanner can
automatically install all updates, or users can select the updates
they want installed.
4. Finally, Vulnerability Scanner provides a summary of installed or
incomplete updates, and lets users know if there are additional
updates that they need to install themselves.
To perform a manual scan:
1. Clicking ‘Application updates’ opens the Vulnerability Scanner
