Welcome to Transfiguration, Vail Valley’s 2018 Parish Booklet! This

year marks the 44th year Christians have gathered in the Anglican

and Episcopalian tradition to worship, serve and celebrate Jesus

Christ in Eagle County, Colorado. Set against the majestic backdrop

of the Gore Range, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountain west,

our congregation follows Jesus through the drama of His divine life.

Enclosed within the following few pages is everything you need to know

in 2018 regarding our church’s leadership, locations and calendar.

Come join us this year as we apprentice with Jesus, learning from

the Master how to work, play, love and serve in His name. Come find

comfort here, our core theme for this year’s teachings, ministries and

programs. And certainly come meet some of the most interesting and

fun people in the world, and you don’t have to look too far to find them….

they are sitting on either side when you come to worship, gather and

serve. May God bless all these events listed here with the presence of

our Risen Lord, and through them may we find our way home.

Warmly in the Lord,

Father Brooks Keith

Rector, The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, Vail Valley

LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS

Reverend Stuart Brooks Keith III

The Reverend Emily Lukanich, Associate Rector

Every time I think about Transfiguration, I smile with joy! The beautiful images of 2017 cascade in my memory…children tearing through the Sunday morning post-worship greeting line to get to snacks, friends and laughter…another epic Christmas Pageant setting lifetime memories of Christian celebration forward towards the 22nd century…teenagers gathering in respect and warm support as they study scripture and ask the hard questions of young adulthood…four generations gathering in dynamic Christian community during candlelit 12th Night Epiphany worship, a packed Easter Brunch, panoramic Mountaintop worship with baptisms and Mother Emily’s Institution, the most energetic Animal Blessing ever, a moving and emotional Senior Sunday, July 4th pancakes and patriotic worship, a warm Advent Saint Nicholas celebration with Saint Nick and the Dickens Carolers…adults diligently studying the scriptures several times weekly…and all the Baptisms, Weddings and Memorials which mark the healthy and dynamic pulse of the Body of Christ.

In 2018 Transfiguration proclaims another Year of the Lord, staking our claim as a proactive congregational partner to our amazing community! We focus this year upon the profound, powerful and poignant comfort of a loving God made available through the sovereignty of Jesus Christ and His gift of the Holy Spirit. In 2018 we call upon Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the Great Physician of our souls and bodies as we continue our lifetime apprenticeship at His feet, and serve as His ambassadors to a world so desperately in need of His divine love. 2018 continues our expanded staff and leadership footprint as we conduct this work together, will witness a renewed focus upon mission and outreach, will include the final episcopal visit of Bishop Robert O’Neill as our diocesan bishop, and the October election of his successor. The remainder of 2018 plans rests in God’s divine purposes, to be revealed to us in His good time. While we don’t always know God’s plans, we know they are higher, better and more adventurous than our own designs. To Him be the Glory forever and ever! May 2018 truly be the Year of our Lord here at ECOT!!

The blessings that I have received from ECOT in 2017 are too many to count. We have had a unbelievably busy year and joyful year. I give thanks daily for the trust and confidence you have placed in me over the last 12 months and I am excited to see how our life as a congregation continues to grow.

In 2017 we began a new worship service on Sunday evenings. The Gathering offers Evening Prayer, Fellowship over a Meal and Christian Education for all ages, with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers we have created a lovely time to pray and grow together. Wondering Women is off to a great start and the discussion always leaves us wanting more when we are done. I enjoy preaching, teaching and serving alongside Brooks, Steve, Jan, Mary,

Rebecca, Margie, Kimberly, Sara and Katie over the past year as they have helped me learn about this parish and community. My family and I know that we have found a home here and for that we are grateful.

Now that our feet are firmly on the ground here in Eagle County, I am so excited about the new opportunities to know Jesus Christ better and to make Him known here. I am looking forward to growing The Gathering and Wondering Women. I am excited for new possibilities for serving our community and the new partnerships that are developing.

Thank you for helping us find our new home and our parish family.

Deacon Steven Baird

Denise Delaney, Pastoral Care

Your Deacon had a memorable 2017. The cancer I would rather forget. But the outpouring of love and support from all of Transfiguration I can never forget. Thank you one and all for your continued prayers, hugs and love.

Illness and its treatment cut into my ability to serve you. It felt very strange not to be with you on mission trips. But also satisfying to see others pick up the mantle. That’s always been my goal, motivate not just do. Though not personally involved it is great to report return trips to Back 2 Back in Mexico and to the Rosenberg Texas area. Mission and Outreach continues substantial funding of a range of local and non local mission partners.

A July weekend with Father Brooks at the Norfolk Naval

Base provided just the diversion I needed. CVN 78, USS Gerald R. Ford, became the US Navy’s newest ship with the commissioning. She is also the lead carrier in the newest class. She is also very very large so touring was an effort but worth every stair we climbed.

I write this from the Ocean Reef Club in Florida on an brief escape from cold weather. Accompanied by Karen and my sister Linda, we are following the adventures of the good knight bestowed upon us at 12th Night. Sir Epiphinus and all down here greet you. Ask Father Brooks if you would like to see pictures.

Thank you again for all you have done and blessings to all.

“Pastoral Care”, caring for persons with God’s love and companionship, is a term developed from the Good Shepherd caring for His sheep. While our ministerial staff provides this care to our congregation, as the church grows, they cannot provide all the support needed because the needs are many.

During 2017 we have formed a “Care Team”, comprised of ECOT volunteers who are trained in pastoral caregiving. Care Team members will receive calls and will initiate contact with ECOT members undergoing personal difficulties.

These life difficulties may include additional stress, financial concerns, religious struggles, loneliness, death, divorce, illness, loss of physical ability, loss of job or home, tragedy or trauma, and tensions in family relationships.

We are just getting off the ground and will expand our Care Team coverage during 2018. Care Team Members: Karen Baird, Kathy Bellamy, Nancy Current, Arlen Holter, Betsy Holter, Jim McVey, J.P. Power, Robert Schilling, August Smirl, Lynda Tasillo.

Rebecca Cotton, Youth Minister

Matthew 19:14 . . . Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is the inspiration for our children’s faith formation, and brings our children close to Jesus in a profound way. CGS offers scripture and liturgical presentations in a manner that elicits a response of innate joy in our youngest children, and intrigues our older children as they learn about God’s plan for salvation and their place in God’s kingdom.

In 2017, our Lenten after-school faith formation program gave our Kinder – 5th graders a chance to build friendships and study the Bible in addition to weekly Sunday school. Our summer camp hosted over 20 children, 4 of whom received scholarships thanks to your gifts of time, talent and treasure. Little Lambs, our Mom’s Morning Out for toddlers, introduces our youngest members to Jesus through songs, prayer,

books, and learning to treat one another with love. Our Acolyte program is continuing to grow- we added 7 children and youth this year to our team!

Looking forward, our middle school and high school youth will continue to help our children To Know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to Make Him Known through volunteering as Sunday school helpers, nursery helpers, and working as summer camp counselors. In 2018, I look forward to celebrating traditional events such as our annual Easter worship and Easter egg hunt, the Vail 4th of July parade, and the Christmas Pageant. And, as Sarah Givens continues to offer Holy Yoga to adults, I plan to provide additional after-school programs so parents can participate in this Bible based practice.

Thank you for making Sunday mornings a priority for your families, and for supporting the newest generation of Christians on their journey of faith.

Greetings all! I am thrilled to be back at this church, and I thank you for the warm welcome you have given me and for your support of ECOT’s youth ministry.

Since July, our youth ministry has had an exciting six months filled with coffee, new friends, deepening our relationships with God, and building community with one another! We’ve recruited 11 volunteers, hosted 32 of our youth at least once at a youth ministry event, and welcomed 20 of our youths’ friends at these events. We’ve read the bible to learn about other teenagers’ walks with God, supported ECOT’s Texas mission team with care packages, and partnered with other Vail Valley youth groups to host a super fun game night at WECMRD.

In 2018, we will continue to have the weekly youth groups, coffee hours, biannual youth retreats, fun activities, and volunteer opportunities that made 2017 successful. We

will host the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper for a youth mission fundraiser and celebrate our graduating seniors in May. We will also offer summer mission opportunities for middle and high school students and teach a high school confirmation class in preparation for the bishop’s last visit in December.

One of my goals this year is to build the foundation for a more sustainable youth ministry program at ECOT. To that end, I am working a) to build a Youth Ministry Team to provide direction, support, and accountability to the youth ministry, b) to equip volunteers to serve as leaders and mentors to our youth, and c) to offer youth opportunities to take ownership and responsibility for this program. With God’s help, these steps will better enable us to equip our youth to know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to make Him known. Thank you all for your support of this ministry!

Margie Ciaccio, Parish Administrator

Katie Campbell, Communications

2017 seems to have come and gone in a flash! A very busy year, with two new full-time positions added to our staff, Associate Rector Mother Emily and Director of Youth Ministries, Rebecca Cotton. I am so grateful to God for bringing such highly qualified individuals to our team and to our congregation. In 2017, I attended a two-week course in Nashville, TN, which was attended by clergy and parish administrators from across the country.

In 2018 I will continue to work towards my certification in

Church Business Administration, allowing me to better serve ECOT and you, our church family. I am also attending a four-year bible study course. All my studies and interactions with fellow administrators, students and co-workers has allowed me to grow in my abilities, skills and relationships with all of you, but most importantly, has developed my personal relationship with God. Afterall, the ECOT mission statement says it perfectly: “To know Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and to make Him known.”

2017 was a year of stabilization and expansion for Transfiguration. As we embarked on the second year of implementation of new and expanded marketing and communication efforts, our community became more involved with increased attendance Easter services, the annual Mountain Top Worship Service, Advent Night and more. I hope that you enjoy catching up on Transfiguration’s activities, events, services, new staff, worship, faith, youth and children’s ministries.

Looking ahead at the new year, our communications efforts will stabilize again and continue to provide information to you that you desire and need, that deepen your faith, that encourage an inspire you, and that help further Transfiguration’s mission. We will continue radio messages on KZYR, post sermons on YouTube, get great photography for our photo bank, send weekly emails, and measure our success. Thank you for the opportunity to continue serving the Transfiguration community!

Mike Williams, Senior Warden

The purpose of the ECOT’s Vestry is to function as a board of directors who oversee the long-term operations of the parish itself as well as her relationship with the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado. As your Senior Warden I have two basic responsibilities; One, to serve as an advisor and confidant to our Clergy and, Two, to chair the Vestry and guide/administer its’ relationship to the functionality of our parish as well as the relationship with the diocese.

The year kicked off with a very focused Policy Governance introduction aimed at bringing our three new vestry members up to speed with our method of functionality. As the year progressed we created a short-term mission group to assist in the clean-up and restoration of the flood-ravaged Houston area, succeeding in restoring a residence for a family whose home had been inundated with flood waters. Another success was the Thanksgiving Dinner which we

co-hosted with our Edwards Chapel Latino congregation Inglesia Apostolocia, feeding 132 people with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, vegetables and dessert. Our final accomplishment was the approval of the annual budget for 2018. I want to commend Terry Smith, Shawna Knauff and the Finance Committee for the many hours that they spent preparing this budget, weighing the needs of all of our activities and allocating the resources accordingly. That document was forwarded to each of the Vestry and was discussed at length before final approval.

To each of you, I extend an invitation to be part of this important part of our parish life. You are all welcome to attend and participate in our discussions concerning the on-going oversight and governance of our Church.

Thank you for your support!

Arlen Holter, Vail Junior Warden

Bonnie Marlette, Edwards Junior Warden

The Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration continued to serve the Vail community through its two locations in 2017. In Father Brooks’ 23-year tenure, Transfiguration has been known for its traditional worship and the breadth of its service programs. Mission trips to both Texas and Mexico were well staffed and a success.

This past year Bible studies occurred in Vail on Tuesday mornings. Transfiguration took the lead in the ecumenical 4th of July service and pancake breakfast attended by 125

persons. There was an increase in the number of baptisms, weddings, and memorial services as well.

The addition to the staff of Transfiguration of Mother Emily allowed Father Brooks to deal with other matters. She also started the 5 p.m. service in Edwards and a weekly women’s coffee group.

This year should bring additional growth in all areas.

Greetings fellow Parishioners & a Happy New Year.

It’s been an honor to serve as the Jr Warden in Edwards for my second year in the 3 year term. The congregation in Edwards is growing. We see new visitors almost every week and have an average attendance of about 110 per Sunday. In addition to the regular Sunday morning worship, this year Edwards has started a new 5pm Evening Prayer

Service. Mother Emily leads this peaceful service followed by dinner and round table Episcopalian bible study. Drop in one Sunday if you haven’t had a chance to do so already! My role as Jr Warden is to listen to the suggestions, concerns and feedback from our congregation and communicate that to the Vestry. I am available at church, by phone or email for anyone who would like to share their voice.
