Overview
• It is estimated that up 80 percent of long-term care in the United states is actually provided by family and informal caregivers.
• PACE is unique as a care provider in supporting family caregivers when appropriate. • The PACE model provides opportunities for the PACE IDT to include caregiver
support in the Participant's care plan.
• The PACE organizations has a financial incentive to support and maintain the family caregiver.
Goals
• Demonstrate PACE family caregiver satisfaction.• Provide a tool for measuring and improving caregiver satisfaction.• Provide a comparison to other long-term care models.
Uses
NPA• Demonstrate PACE quality.• Distinguishes PACE from other health care models of care.• Provides an opportunity for media outreach.• Ties into National PACE Month’s (September) focus on caregivers
PACE Organizations• Provides a new selling point to referral sources and potential participants.• Provides data on an important area of quality improvement.
Caregiver Burden
• Stress perceived by caregivers due to home care situation.
• One of the most important predictors for negatives outcomes of care situations.
• For caregivers themselves and for the person who requires care.
Zarit Caregiver Burden Survey
• Identified by American Psychological Association
• Used by aging agencies and PACE programs
• Developed in 1980
• 29-items measuring personal strain and role strain
• Revised in 1991
• 22-items with same two dimensions
• Second revision (used currently)
• 12-items that measure a single dimension of burden
