Exciting Parallel Twin Engine

HTuning of the 649 cc Parallel Twin engine focused on achieving a throttle response that balanced a powerful feeling and a quick-revving character. To optimise performance for everyday riding, care was taken to maximise low-mid range torque. When opening the throttle, riders will notice an extremely smooth and powerful engine character that offers both a high level of control when making minute throttle adjustments and a gratifying rush of acceleration in the lower rpm ranges. This tuning also benefits fuel economy.

HPerformance and feel were optimised for the mid-range (3,000-6,000 rpm). However, in the low-rpm range (below 3,000 rpm) power delivery is very smooth, and even above 6,000 rpm power and torque curves continue on without dropping off suddenly. (Illustration A)

H These settings result in a performance that favours speeds most used in everyday riding. Corner pick-up is excellent: the powerful mid-range delivers a satisfying surge of acceleration and the flat, step-free torque curve and smooth engine response let riders open the throttle with confidence – at any rpm.

HThe new engine settings also contribute to improved fuel efficiency: WMTC mode mileage is 6.8%* better than that of the EX650E/F. In particular, fuel consumption at normal running velocity (between 50-100 km/h) is remarkably improved. (*Measured at Kawasaki test centre under WMTC mode conditions. Actual mileage varies depending on riding style, riding conditions and vehicle maintenance.) (Illustration B)

HSlim air cleaner box (which facilitates the Ninja 650's slim overall design) uses a single air intake hole and intake funnels designed for strong low-mid range performance and response.

Hø36 mm throttle bodies contribute to strong low-mid range performance and response. Sub-throttles ensure smooth, sensitive throttle response.

H Intake and exhaust cams with short operating angles and overlap move the torque curve toward the lower end of the rpm range.

HOpen-deck aluminium die-cast cylinder contributes to light weight. Plated, linerless cylinder bores enable a narrow cylinder pitch to enable a slim engine width.

HUnder-engine muffler improves mass centralisation and lowers the bike's centre of gravity.

HMuffler internal construction and catalyser layout ensure clean emissions that will pass stringent Euro 4 regulations.

HTriangular layout of the crankshaft and transmission shafts makes the engine very short front-to-back.

H 180° crankshaft drives a balancer shaft for silky smooth engine operation.

HSemi-dry sump design reduces engine height. The engine's compact size allows the engine to positioned lower in the frame, contributing to a low centre of gravity.

H Auto-fast idle system simplifies starting ad ensures the catalyser reaches optimum temperature quickly.

HPatented radiator fan cover located behind the radiator directs hot air down and away from the rider, significantly increasing comfort when stuck in heavy traffic. Redirecting the air also helps keep the tank, frame and other parts that contact the rider cooler, further increasing rider comfort.

HDesigned to emphasize the appearance of the engine, engine covers (generator, clutch, chain) have a functional beauty. Complemented by the cylinder head design, they give the engine a compact look, contributing to the bike's light appearance.

TransmissionHLink-type gear shift lever arrangement delivers a direct feeling.

H Transmission input shaft, output shaft and change drum are contained in a "cassette"-style package that allows a compact layout.

Assist & Slipper Clutch

H Assist & Slipper Clutch was developed based on feedback from racing activities. The clutch uses two types of cams (an assist cam and a slipper cam), offering two new functions not available on a standard clutch.

HWhen the engine is operating at normal rpm the assist cam functions as a self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating plate together to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutch spring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull when operating the clutch.

H When excessive engine braking occurs – as a result of quick downshifts (or an accidental downshift) – the slipper cam comes into play, forcing the clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on the clutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tyre from hopping and skidding.

All-new Trellis Frame

HOne of the key components to realising the new Ninja 650's lighter weight (noticeable as soon as the bike is lifted off its side-stand), the all-new frame weighs only 15 kg and contributes significantly to the bike's light, nimble handling.

HComponents of the high-tensile steel trellis frame follow the ideal pipe line. The lines of the frame were made as straight as possible, and when bends were necessary their angles were made as small as possible, resulting in a design that disperses stress extremely well.

HKawasaki's new in-house analysis technology was used to precisely determine the necessary pipe diameter, length and wall thickness to deliver the ideal lateral and torsional rigidity. This allowed unnecessary material to be trimmed, resulting in an extremely lightweight frame: the new frame weighs only 15 kg, a key to the new Ninja 650's light, nimble handling.

HRigid-mount engine is a stressed member, contributing to the frame's idealised rigidity balance.

HEven the footpeg stays are used as stressed members, further contributing to the frame's rigidity and light weight.

H o Steep caster angle (24.0 ) contributes to the sharp handling.

HKawasaki's new in-house analysis technology was also used developing the swingarm. Similar to the frame, the line from the pivot to rear axle was made as straight as possible. The lightweight design of swingarm (4.8 kg) contributes to the bike's light, natural handling.

HA short wheelbase and tight turning radius contribute to the Ninja 650's high manoeuvrability.

H Twin-tube type rear frame contributes to the bike's low seat height and easy reach to the ground.

H Handlebar is rubber-mounted to reduce vibration transmitted through the hand grips.

H Seat bracket is rubber-mounted at the front to reduce vibration transferred through the seat.

H Footpeg stays are rubber-mounted and both rider and pillion footpegs are rubber-coated to further reduce vibration.

Rider-friendly ErgonomicsH The riding position was specially designed to inspire rider confidence. An ideal relationship between the handlebars, seat and footpegs results in a comfortable and natural position suitable for a wide range of riders.

H Slightly wider handlebar (10 mm each side) offers larger riders a little more room.

H The narrow frame and engine create a narrow overall package, allowing the rider to keep his or her knees and feet close together.

H Thanks to the low seat height and slim overall design, it’s easy to keep both feet firmly on the ground when stopped, an important consideration for many riders.

H While the seat does not lower the seat height, its construction and the narrower distance between the pivot covers (both possible thanks to the slim new rear frame design) result in a slimmer package between the rider’s feet. Riders are now able to put their feet on the ground approximately 50 mm closer together (each side), which makes the reach to the ground feel significantly shorter.

Increased Wind ProtectionH Sporty windscreen is adjustable. Three positions offer a total range of 60 mm.

H Wind-tunnel designed aerodynamics package contributes to increased comfort. The new bodywork and windscreen offer better wind protection and were designed to minimise head buffeting.

Heat ManagementH Large cut-outs in the side fairings help draw heat from the enginecompartment out and away from the rider, contributing to rider comfort.

HFrame covers protect the rider’s knees from directly gripping the frametubes, which can become hot.

BrakesH Dual 300 mm front petal disc brakes and 220 mm rear petal disc look great and deliver plenty of braking power.

MORE AGGRESSIVE NINJA SUPERSPORT STYLINGStyling cues taken from our Ninja supersport models give the Ninja 650 an even more aggressive, sporty appearance. Like on its predecessor, all lines move forward and downward, suggesting a crouching countenance, however the sharp new bodywork gives the new machine a much more condensed, mass-forward appearance. The new bodywork is complemented by the new double-pipe perimeter-style frame and the Ninja 650’s characteristic offset laydown rear suspension. Attention to the smallest details contributes to the new bike’s high-quality finish.

BodyworkH Sharp dual headlamp design contributes to the more aggressive face of the new Ninja 650. The dualheadlamp design features twin position lamps – just like on our Ninja supersport models. The sculptedshape of the multi-reflector headlamp’s bulb hoods is an example of the attention given to detail on this model.

H The “chin area” of the front fairing takes its styling cues from the Ninja 1000 (Z1000SX), further reinforcing the Ninja family resemblance.

HStylish star-pattern 5-spoke wheels contribute to light weight, while their high rigidity benefits handling. They also contribute to the bike's light looks.

H Low unsprung weight (thanks to parts like the swingarm, wheels, and hollow-type front axle) greatly contributes to the light, nimble handling.

H Silica-blend tyres offer both wet-weather performance and reduced rolling resistance, which contributes to the excellent fuel economy.

Relaxed, Sporty Ergonomics

HThe Ninja 650's upright position (compared to supersport models) and fine-tuned rider triangle offer both control and comfort.

HThanks to the low seat height and the bike's slim overall design, it's easy to keep both feet firmly on the ground when stopped, an important consideration for many riders. Low seat height accommodates riders spanning a wide range of heights, enabling them to ride with confidence.

HSeparate, raised handlebars mounted to the upper triple clamp contribute to the bike's sporty looks. Offering both control and comfort, they put the rider in a good position for sport riding.

HFootpeg position offers a relaxed knee bend, contributing to rider comfort.

HThe narrow frame and engine create a narrow overall package, allowing the rider to keep his or her knees and feet close together.

HSlim fuel tank is positioned low in the chassis. In addition to contributing to the light, dynamic styling, the shape is easy to grip with the knees.

HSporty front seat is slim at the front, facilitating the rider's reach to the ground.

HBoth clutch and brake levers are 5-way adjustable, able to accommodate a variety of hand sizes for increased comfort.

HRider and passenger footpegs feature rubber pads. Harder rubber combined with hollow centres were designed to reduce vibration felt through the footpegs.
