Palm Sunday March 25, 2018
On Monday, March 19, the Church celebrated the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Husband of Mary. St. Joseph is the Patron of the Universal Church. After the homily Fr. Joe led us all in the “Litany of St. Joseph.” One of the things St. Joseph is the patron saint of is the “Patron Saint of a Happy Death,” which is named in the Litany.
The summer after my first year at St. John’s, I was assigned to St. Patrick’s parish in Lawrence. The Church is neo-gothic, and has some truly remarkable stained glass windows. As a little project, the pastor asked me to pray with the windows and to write a brief reflection for each. Most of the windows are familiar stories from the Scriptures, but I was (and still am), quite taken with the eighth window depicting the death of St. Joseph. The photo here does not do the window full-justice, but it gives you a sense of what I am speaking about.
I am taken by the facial expressions of Jesus, Mary, and the two angels. The expression on the faces of Mary and the angel nearest her are a mixture of sadness and concern. But when we look at the left of the window, the portion depicting Jesus and another angel, we see something quite different. Most striking is the expression on the face of the angel nearest Jesus. Her face is a sly smirk. Her gaze toward Jesus, and the look on her face, seems to suggest that she knows something Mary and the other angel do not. The look on her face seems to suggest, “They have nothing to worry about”… and they don’t. Of course Jesus is going to honor His foster-father and guarantee for him a place of precedence in the Heavenly Kingdom.
I wish that we would all approach our death and the deaths of our loved ones in this way, trusting in Jesus and His love for us. Each Sacrament of the Church has a special grace attached to it. When we look at the Sacraments, which God has given to His Church, the one most often forgot about is Holy Anointing. Holy Anointing, like the other Six, is a powerful Sacrament which confers real Grace.
Holy Anointing “Can be administered to a member of the faithful who, having reached the use of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age and can be repeated if the sick person, having recovered, again becomes gravely ill or if the condition becomes more grave during the same illness” (Code of Canon Law, 1004 §1+ §2).
Too often, priests are called to the bedside in the eleventh hour, and sometimes, unfortunately, cannot make in time. You do not need to wait until death seems immanent to ask for a priest to administer the Sacrament of Holy Anointing!
Holy Anointing is no longer called nor considered “Extreme Unction.” So, although one doesn’t need to be near death to benefit from the healing which Holy Anointing can offer, the biggest Grace that Holy Anointing confers upon those near the end of life is the Grace to die well, the Grace of a happy death.
As we approach Easter, it is important not to forget the meaning of Easter, that by His Resurrection, Jesus opens up for each of us, the path and the gateway to Eternal Life in Heaven! None of us were created for this world. Each of us was created to be in Heaven! As we draw nearer to Easter, may we keep this reality in mind. For all of us who one day will be called Home by the Father (which is all of us), may we pray now to St. Joseph, Patron Saint of a Happy Death, that by his intercession and with the Grace of the Sacraments, we may have that happy death when we are called from this world, by the Glory of the Resurrection, to be with the Father in Heaven. ~ Fr. Will (photo courtesy of St. Patrick’s Parish, Lawrence, website: https://www.saintpatrickparish.com/upper-church-windows)

The celebration of the Eucharist is the highest form of worship in the Catholic Church and it is our long standing tradition to pray for the dead at Mass. Anyone can ask for a Mass to be offered for a special intention; the most common being for the repose of the soul of someone who died.
We reserve one intention per Mass and you can schedule a Mass by contacting the respective parish office.

The St. Joseph Fund
Immaculate Conception’s St. Joseph fund helps to
provide shelter and security to families in the form of
grant assistance to those in urgent need. Help is given
in the form of emergency aid with mortgage/rent
assistance, utility bill support and food aid. If you would like to donate to this worthwhile cause,
checks can be made out to Immaculate Conception
Church with the phrase “St. Joseph Fund” written in
the memo section. One hundred percent of every
dollar donated is used to help those in need. Your
check can be mailed to either Parish office.
Thank you for your willingness to help our
neighbors who are struggling.
