the accumulation of performance points from regional shows. There is pride the whole state can revel in when the best of the best compete in the city. It’s for that reason the RAS works closely with country shows to share knowledge about event management, competition administration and bio-security messaging.
Engaging young people in the industry is a challenge which the RAS embrace. In consultation with government, key industry stakeholders, and educators they work to ensure programs developed are relevant to today’s youth, igniting a passion for agriculture.
While the Sydney Royal Easter Show is its cardinal event, the RAS has established a diverse portfolio, including world-class Sydney Showground which generates a total economic impact of $615 million towards the NSW economy.
Another aspect of the RAS portfolio is the Australasian Animal Registry - the most comprehensive not-for-profit animal registration and recovery service in Australasia.
Excitement is in the air at Sydney Showground for what is shaping up to be an amazing Sydney Royal Easter Show. Once again the country will come to the city in a celebration of our world-class agriculture industry.
Of all the events the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) holds through the year, this is the pinnacle of what they strive toward as laid out in their mission, which is, ‘to promote, foster and encourage the sustainable development of agriculture of the state’.
The Sydney Royal Competitions held during the Sydney Royal Easter Show attract close to 30,000 Australia-wide entries each year. Exhibitors enter their product, animal or skill in an attempt to win the prestige of a Sydney Royal award. The Sydney Royal Wine, Dairy, Fine Food, Chocolate and Beer & Cider Shows are held throughout the year rewarding excellence in Australian produce.
Country agricultural shows have an important role to play when it comes to produce, art and craft. Some Sydney Royal competitions are only possible with

DISTRICT EXHIBIT DISPLAYSIt simply isn’t a visit to the Show without a stop to see the District Exhibits displays in the Woolworths Fresh Food Dome. The idea originated in 1876, with Courts set aside for country societies to exhibit their produce. In 1900, it became a formal Competition with prize money, trophies and, most importantly, district pride on the line. Displays are entered by five competing regions representing Southern, Northern, Western, Central NSW and
South East Queensland and comprise fresh fruit, vegetables, pulses, wool, eggs, beeswax, wine, jams, grain, bacon and more. In all, 50,000 pieces of produce are used to create the exhibits and on the final day of the Show, there is a sale offering the chance to grab a bargain whilst supporting our Australian farmers. All left-over produce is then collected by Oz Harvest and distributed out to the community.
Fresh produce can be purchased at the front of each District Exhibit every day of the Show. When Daily 9.30am – 8.30pmWhere Woolworths Fresh Food Dome

MERINO SECTION – MEDIUM WOOLWhen you’re in the Sheep Pavilion look for the Australian Medium Merino – our feature wool breed for 2018. Medium wool types are the main Merino representative and are found throughout NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. The sheep are large framed and plain bodied, producing a heavy fleece which is soft handling and of good colour, whilst also being hard wearing. Medium wool is used mainly for light suiting and knitwear.
CATTLE SECTION In 2018, the Cattle section feature breed is Hereford, found all throughout Australia and recognised for their docile temperament and low feed requirements. They were first imported into Australia to Hobart in 1826, not reaching the mainland until 1827, with further importations being made in the 1840s. The Hereford colour is characteristic, with the body colour varying from rust brown to a deep rich red. Face, crest, dewlap, underline, switch and legs below the hocks are characteristically white.
ARTS & CRAFTS Delicate features carefully hand-painted, intricate stitching and soft felt noses, fluff and fur and velvet accessories… the 2018 Arts & Crafts Show feature display is Dolls & Toys. You’ll be amazed by the porcelain dolls, crochet toys and teddy bears that have been made with love and care by Arts & Crafts enthusiasts. You may even discover how to ‘make’ a new friend for yourself.
POULTRY SECTION When you’re in the Steggles Poultry Pavilion, look for the 2018 feature breeds. Highlighting Field & Forest, this year the spotlight falls on Turkeys, Jungle Fowl and Guinea Fowl.
Turkeys love to wander but they are easily tamed and have a gentle temperament. Although they can fly when young, at maturity they are usually too large to get far off the ground. Thought to be the wild ancestor of all domestic poultry, Jungle Fowl are a very productive food source of both meat and eggs, laying a clutch of 5-8 eggs at a time.
Guinea Fowl are a peculiar bird, they will protect your garden from bugs and sing you a sweet song but they are also a very determined bird and produce less than 100 eggs a year. SHEEP SECTION Introducing the Hampshire Down as the 2018 Sydney Royal Sheep Meat and Dual Purpose Feature Breed. The Hampshire Down is a breed that evolved in response to the need for more and more meat in the mid 1800s and arrived in Australia in the late 1860s. The Hampshire Down not only produces a springy, medium staple wool, but was bred for its fast growing/maturing prime lambs. The fibre is soft and can be used for near and next to near skin items including socks, hats, mittens, gloves, etc. This is a strong reliable breed with face, ears and legs of a rich dark brown and white medium wool covering the body.
