Principal’s Message The new school year is underway! It usually only takes a few days, and we are all back at the routine. I have the pleasure of reading the teachers 'newsletters before they are sent home, and many of them mention homework expectations and routines for their classes. Generally, teachers don’t send home regular work, except for home reading.

The work we do here at school is only a part of each child’s growth, and we value the input each of you have into your own children. Let’s keep working together and make this another great year of learning for everyone.

In 2011, in the interest of student safety, Sturgeon Public School Division instituted a policy requiring that all adults accompanying or meeting fieldtrips are required to have a Criminal Record Check on file at the school prior to the fieldtrip. Please keep in mind that if you submitted a background check to the office last year, you are NOT required to get a new one this time. If you require a background check, please stop by the office to pick up the needed documentation for the RCMP. When submitting a background check to the office, please be advised that the original MUST be stamped by the RCMP within the last 6 months. The office will make a copy and give you back the original.

Awesome Job!

Meet the staff and Community Evening

was held on Thursday, Sept 6th from 5:30- 7:30 p.m. was a Huge success. It was great to see many families come out to meet the staff and learn more about the community. Many thanks to the Town of Gibbons for supplying and preparing food for the evening.

On Tuesday, September 19th the entire school (staff and students) were treated to a delicious spaghetti lunch provided by our PIA committee. We would like to say THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped organize, prepare and serve in order to make this lunch possible!

End of Day Dismissal Often at the end of the day, there is a lot of confusion in the front of the school as we are try-ing to figure out who is on the busses and who we need to account for. If you are picking your children up after school, we ask that you wait in the foyer or at their dismissal door until the second dismissal bell goes. Please, do not wait outside the classroom. When the town stu-dent dismissal bell goes, students will be directed to go to the foyer, or you may go to the class-room to pick them up.

FYI Doctors

Vision is an integral component of a child’s education. In fact, studies show that 80% of classroom learning is vis-ual.

To support Canadian children’s education, FYI Doctors launched our nation-wide community outreach program in 2014: Better Sight. Better Grades.

What is Better Sight. Better Grades.? In February 2014, FYI doctors was proud to establish the Better Sight. Better Grades. program as part of there commitment to the community and to promote healthy eyesight among young learners. This program aligns with there focus to provide accessible eye care and corrective wear to children who may need it to help them overcome challenges associated with poor vision, learning, and becoming successful.

Through this Better Sight. Better Grades program, our optometrists and staff work with local schools to identify children who may be having vision problems and who could potentially need corrective lenses, but whose fami-lies may not have the means to afford them.

We then conduct detailed pre-testing and comprehensive eye exams using the most modern lens technology and electronic measurement devices to create custom fittings for these young patients. Finally, we are pleased to provide a complimentary pair of eyeglasses from our wide selection of designer and exclusive-label frames for the student—with absolutely no strings attached.

If you are experiencing financial need and your child requires new glass please contact Ms. Burrell.

STUDENT SAFETY

For your child’s safety please use designated sidewalks, and look both ways before crossing the street. If your child will be riding a bike, please remind them to dismount their bike and walk their bike across the road using the cross-walks. Parents are welcome to park in the gravel parking lot to the west of the building.

Nutrition Program

Our Nutrition program provides students with healthy snacks and lunches throughout the year. Fresh fruits and veggies, yogurt, cheese and other nutritious snacks and lunch items will be available to students when needed. Once again an immeasurable Thank You to all parents, businesses and staff that helped to make sure our program was a success last year. The continued success of this program will rely heavily on donations. We hope that we will continue with our old partnerships and form many new ones as well. Tax receipts will be issued for any donations of $25.00 and over.

Thank you for your continued support!

POWER SCHOOL PARENT PORTAL

PowerSchool has recently made some exciting updates to their platform that includes enhancements for teacher gradebooks that will affect Sturgeon Public School Division schools. Teachers will transition to the updated gradebook over the course of the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 school year. During the transition, we anticipate no changes to what parents and students see in the PowerSchool Parent Portal. To support your continued navigation and use of the PowerSchool Parent Portal, an updated User Guide will be shared in the coming months. Thank you.
