You will work with some of the nation’s top percussion educators, composers, and performers every day — learn from them, watch them perform, and perform with them. Immerse yourself in a world of percussion and emerge a more confident performer, knowledgeable musician, and inspired person. Learn successful practice strategies, effective time management, and problem solving; hone your organizational and leadership skills; and get tips on auditioning and career guidance. Birch Creek is a fun, supportive, and challenging environment that helps students learn to do their best work. Areas of Study Concert Percussion – Fine tune your fundamental percussion skills on snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and accessory instruments (tambourine, triangle, cymbals, etc.). Mallet Percussion – Fine tune your fundamental percussion skills on snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and accessory instruments (tambourine, triangle, cymbals, etc.). Percussion Ensemble – Under the guidance of some of the most knowledgeable conductor/teachers, you will engage with important music for percussion ensemble— from classic repertoire to the newest compositions, world music, and novelty selections. Steel Band – The Birch Creek Steel Band provides an exciting opportunity to perform with, and learn from, steel pan virtuoso Liam Teague. You will learn performance techniques, steel pan history, and composing and arranging for steel pans. Composition - Birch Creek gives you the unique opportunity to learn about composing for percussion. You will learn composition and arranging techniques and even have the chance to write your own music under the guidance of Composer in Residence Brian Nozny as well as other faculty and guest composers. Drum Set - Learn new musical styles and techniques that will fine tune your skills. World Percussion - Experience a variety of music of the world. Birch Creek Faculty Artists have a wide range of expertise in musical styles from around the world.

Located in the beautiful upper peninsula of Door County, Wisconsin, The Birch Creek Percussion and Steel Band Session features a unique learning community approach to education that focuses on individual student growth in small and large group settings. You will work with some of the nation’s top percussion educators, composers, and performers every day — learn from them, watch them perform, and perform with them.

Immerse yourself in a world of percussion and emerge a more con� dent performer, knowledgeable musician, and inspired person. Areas of Study

• Concert Percussion – Fine tune your fundamental percussion skills on snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and accessory instruments (tambourine, triangle, cymbals, etc.).

At Birch Creek, we believe so strongly in the importance of music education that EVERY student automatically receives Play It Forward Program Support of $2,705 toward their tuition of $4,805. We want to ensure that our tuition fees are a� ordable to most families – and that we are able to raise additional donations to help those for whom even our subsidized tuition is a challenge.

Additional Scholarship AssistanceBirch Creek has additional assistance available to our students based on � nancial need and instruments needed in each session. First, the initial student application requirements must be met before a Scholarship Application can be considered. Once accepted, a student may then submit a Scholarship Application (available at birchcreek.org/academy/apply-now). Additional scholarship assistance is awarded on a � rst-come, � rst-served basis.

A $100 application fee is due at the time of application. If a student is accepted, this $100 application fee is applied to the student’s account as a credit. If a student is not accepted, the $100 application fee is refunded.

A deposit of $500 is due within 30 days of acceptance.

The balance is due 30 days before the start of your session.

Applications will be accepted through spring and early summer; however, scholarships will be assigned on a � rst-come, � rst-served basis. Apply early, as many instrument positions � ll quickly. If an instrument position is � lled, you will be placed on a waiting list as cancellations do occur.

TIPS FOR RECORDING YOUR AUDITION VIDEOS1. SELECT YOUR MUSIC – Select the music according to the repertoire requirements above. Choose

repertoire that is well within your grasp and that you know you can play well. Make sure the musical focus is directly on you.

2. RECORD YOUR AUDITION – Watch and listen to your recording. Keep the recording process simple. If you are not satis� ed, you might consider recording on two or three di� erent days; then listen to all the recordings, and submit the best one.

3. SUBMIT YOUR AUDITION RECORDING

Percussion & Steel Band JUNIOR TRACK applicants will audition on their First Day at Birch Creek. The audition will consist of the following:

Snare Drum – One short concert snare drum solo or etude from any standard method book.

Keyboard Percussion – One short two-mallet solo or etude from any standard method book.

Sight-Reading – Students will be asked to sight-read a short, level appropriate, piece on snare drum and two-mallet keyboard.

Junior Track applicants are not required to submit a video audition unless applying for a Scholarship. If a Junior Track student wishes to apply for a scholarship they must submit a video of their snare and keyboard pieces. See information below about preparing your video.

Percussion & Steel Band SENIOR TRACK applicants must submit a VIDEO AUDITION RECORDING.(Note: Returning students are not required to submit a video audition unless applying for a Scholarship.)The following must be included in your video.

Snare Drum Required: One concert snare drum solo from Portraits in Rhythm by Anthony Cirone or a similar collection (all-state or all-region audition music is acceptable). Optional: One contrasting solo in a rudimental or contemporary style.

Keyboard PercussionRequired: One two-mallet solo or etude such as all-state or all-region audition music or from books such as Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, and Vibraphone by Morris Goldenberg or Masterpieces for Marimba by Thomas McMillan. Desired but optional: One four-mallet marimba or vibraphone solo of your choice.

You may also include additional VideosStudents are encouraged to include video performances of other percussion interests you have such as drumset, steel pan, jazz vibes/marimba, hand drums, piano, or other instruments. Do you sing, tap dance, play bagpipes, or have you composed your own music? If so, share it with us.

NOTE: All applicants will be given a sight-reading audition on their � rst day at Birch Creek for ensemble placements, so be sure to practice your sight reading!

Program Director: Dan MooreDan Moore is an internationally recognized vibes/marimba artist, percussion educator, composer, and producer. Dr. Moore is Professor of Music and directs the award winning percussion program at the University of Iowa School of Music.

Steel Band Director: Liam TeagueLiam Teague is a virtuoso steel pan performer, composer, and educator. He is head of Steelpan Studies and Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University. He is the arranger for PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars Steel Orchestra in Trinidad and Tobago.

REFUND POLICY – All requests to cancel enrollment must be made in writing. If cancellation is received 30 days prior to the start of the session, all money except the $100 deposit will be refunded. Any cancellation made fewer than 30 days prior to the session will result in forfeiture of all money paid. If a student leaves during a session because of an illness or documented family emergency, a prorated refund will be given. If a student leaves for other reasons, the balance will not be refunded.

NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY – It is Birch Creek’s policy to maintain a safe and supportive learning and living environment that is free from harassment, intimidation, and/or bullying and free from discrimination based on race, color, creed, ethnicity, national origin, citizenship/immigration status, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability.

SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS – Obtain a scholarship application from our website, birchcreek.org/academy. Student application requirements must be met before his or her scholarship application is considered.

PLACEMENT AUDITIONS will be held at the beginning of each session. These auditions determine placement in large and small groups. Audition requirements will be e-mailed with acceptance package.

CAMP DECORUM – Birch Creek reserves the right to refuse registrations from participants who have a history of disruptive behavior. Any student with behavior that is contrary to the reputation of Birch Creek and/or disrupts the camp living and learning experience for others will be dismissed from the program without refund.
