The candidate’s answers show comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the facts, concepts and
principles in the curriculum. He/she demonstrates proficient skills in questions related to scientific
investigation, such as identifying features shown in photomicrographs and relating them to the knowledge
learned (Paper 1B Q.2(a) and Q.3(a)(i)), giving clear and accurate descriptions of observations (Paper 1B
Q.2(b), 3(a)(ii) and 8(b)(ii)), analysing results and providing clear and logical explanations (Paper 1B Q.8
(b)(iii)). He/she also handled questions set on both familiar (Paper 1B Q.2, Q.5, Q.7 and Q.10(b)) and
unfamiliar situations competently (Paper 1B Q.3(b) and Q.9(a)). In the essay type question (Paper 1B
Q.11), he/she was able to select relevant knowledge and use scientific terminology to communicate ideas
effectively and provide a clear and logical presentation on the journey of the carbon atom.
