BRANDT REACTION® water soluble, soil applied nutrients were specially formulated to improve P, K and S nutrient uptake and e�ciency. The patented chemistry protects applied phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and sulfur (S), delaying their interaction with soluble ions and/or soil charge that can limit nutrient availability. By delaying any reaction, nutrients are able to move freely within the soil and remain available to the plant for an extended period during the growing season.

Microbial Component, a very high potency, bacteria laden blend of microorganisms, en-

zymes, phytohormones, vitamins, minerals and other proprietary ingredients. Speci�cally

designed for golf course greens and tees, the BRANDT NOCULATE component when

blended into our fertilizer:

Humic MatterNature’s own growth bio-stimulant is the richest, most bio-active form available. Humic

matter is highly biodegraded and compressed remains of ancient plant and animal

materials. Simply put, these highly decomposed organic materials have fossilized over

millions of years and are commonly used as soil additives, soil conditioners and fertilizer

activators.

Mined and pelletized for use in BRANDT NOCULATE fertilizers, these humic substances

are proven to be natural chelating and carrier agents helping to more e�ectively trans-

port and make nutrients available to the plant, as well as providing stress relief.

The natural bio stimulant e�ect of humic matter helps turf to resist stress not only from

climactic sources, but also stress due to transplant and nematode infestation.

The use of humic matter greatly enhances nutrient transfer, helping improve the uptake

and absorption of macro and micro elements by all turf grasses.

he rhizosphere refers to space at the root-soil interface (Figure 1) where plant roots and soil microorganisms

interact. Rhizonify™ is a new product from Grigg Brothers designed to facilitate the interaction of turfgrass roots with water, nutrients, and sugars in the rhizosphere to improve rooting, enhance plant energy status, and promote turfgrass vigor in challenging soil conditions or during environmental stress

Nonstructural carbohydrates, or simple and complex sugars, generated by photosynthesis provide an energy source for turfgrass plants. For metabolically active plants, carbohydrates are consumed for immediate energy needs, or stored in crown and root tissue for future use such as during dormancy or environmental stress. In general, nitrogen (N) fertilization lowers carbohydrate status in plants due to increased demand for energy to assimilate N. Viable root maintenance and generation rely on energy in the form of carbohydrate for vital metabolic

processes such as respiration and protein synthesis. In soils, plant roots produce (exude) carbohydrate, which in turn is used by microbes as an important energy source. A thriving microbial community relies on these sugars to improve soil structure, decompose thatch, and generate plant available nutrients. Exudates also form the foundation for the ‘organic fraction’ of a soil – a process especially important for sand based or highly amended root-zones. The organic fraction can improve nutrient exchange and moisture retention (Figure 2). Under conditions such as low mowing heights, shade, limited nutrient availability, salt stress, compaction, biotic pests, and/or hydrophobic soil, photosynthetic productivity declines and subsequent energy production and storage slows. As metabolic activity declines, so do root exudates. Applications of Rhizonify will enhance and replenish plant and soil carbohydrates at the rhizosphere to successfully overcome these limitations, or when adverse soil conditions warrant its use as part of a general maintenance strategy.

Placement and solubility of the carbohydrate and nutrient contained in Rhizonify determine its efficacy. Rhizonify was strategically developed and formulated with a specifically designed wetting agent to improve water penetration and

nutrient placement. The wetting agent technology also provides a uniform soil wetting front for the carbohydrates and nutrient contained in Rhizonify to reach its target – the entire rhizosphere. Rhizonify also provides a useful tool to manage and promote recovery from hydrophobic soil conditions or localized dry spot (LDS) (Figure 3). Rhizonify is available in the same trusted formulation as all Grigg Brothers products and includes readily available plant nutrients (N, P, K + minors) and reactive non-plant food ingredients including fulvic & humic acid and amino & organic acids to stimulate the rhizosphere. Rhizonify represents the ‘next generation’ of soil specialty products because of its technologically advanced, value-added formulation. To maximize plant use of applied carbohydrate and its associated benefits, consider selecting Carboplex, the sister product to Rhizonify, and apply it as you would a foliar fertilizer – to the turf canopy for leaf, stem and crown absorption. In either case, we recommend using these tools as a supplement to correct pest management programs and cultural practices such as mowing, irrigation, fertilization, aeration, and topdressing programs for optimal success.

Alkaline Hydrolysis Can Cost You Time and MoneyWasted Product, Poor Results, Re-sprays and Extra Manpower Can Result

Have you ever applied a pes cide or herbicide and it didn’t work? You may have thought that it was caused by applicator error, pest resistance or the chemical itself; however, it could very well be the pH of the water and tank solu on that caused the problem. As a result, even though you used the right chemical for the target pest or weed, you nd yourself not knowing if a re-spray will work any be er than the rst spray.Checking the pH of the tank solu on and bu ering it (if the pH is too high for the chemistry you are applying) will pay dividends in reduced pes cide costs, consistent op mal performance and peace of mind.

The impact of pH on pes cides

Here is what the University of Nevada has to say about pH and its impact on pes cides: “The characteris cs of water used in a spray mix in uence the e ec veness of some pes cides. One of the most important is the pH of the water…. Water with a pH higher than 7 is alkaline. Many pes cides…undergo a chemical reac on in the presence of alkaline water that reduces their e ec veness. This reac on is called alkaline hydrolysis. The pes cide is hydrolyzed and rendered ine ec ve when it is mixed with water with a pH greater than 7. The more alkaline the water, the more rapidly the pes cide breaks down.”

“The hydrolysis can be very fast when the water is greater than 8 or 9. For every unit increase in pH, the rate of hydrolysis increases 10 mes. Some pes cides

begin to break down as soon as they are combined with alkaline water in the tank, especially when the pH is very high. As a consequence, the ac ve ingredients start to change to inac ve ingredients before the pes cide even leaves the tank!”

Raymond Cloyd of The University of Illinois advises: “Insec cides and mi cides are more suscep ble to alkaline hydrolysis than fungicides and herbicides. Many insec cides and mi cides…degrade under alkaline condi ons. For example, Malathion, Kelthane, Dylox, and Turcam are very sensi ve, degenera ng within a few hours a er diluted in alkaline water….

Other pest-control materials can be a ected by high pHs. For example, a pH of 8 can reduce the e�cacy ofBacillus thuringensis (Dipel, Thuricide, and Javelin) toxins and the insect growth regulator azadirach n(Aza n)”. See Table 1

So take the me to check the pH of the water and the tank solu on (before and a er you add the other components of the tank mix), and bu er the water to the manufacturer’s recommended pH range.

NOTE: Never bu er solu ons containing xed copper or lime fungicides, including Bordeaux, copper oxide, basic copper sulfate, copper hydroxide, etc. or lime.

Plant damage will occur if these and similar chemicals are applied at an acidic pH.

Nutrol® EPA Registered Tank Bu er Prevents Alkaline Hydrolysis....

Nutrol® is a unique product. Its versa lity, safety and mul -purpose capabili es make it a must have tool in your arsenal of turf and crop fer lity and disease control products.

Nutrol® is an EPA registered fungicide that can suppress and eradicate powdery mildew (when used alone) and several soil and foliar diseases when tank mixed with Prudent® fer lizers (see Nutrol label for details). Nutrol is also a highly concentrated, low salt index, water soluble P & K fer lizer that quickly corrects phosphate and potassium de ciencies.

And equally important, Nutrol® is an excellent tank bu er that will acidify and bu er dis lled water to a pH range of 4.5 – 5.5. Many pes cides and herbicides can start to lose their e�cacy immediately if they are mixed with alkaline solu ons. By adding Nutrol® to the tank you can bu er the tank solu on and ensure thatpes cide and herbicide applica ons are e ec ve and are delivered to the target pest at the manufacturer’sdesired ac vity. This means fewer re-sprays, more consistent performance, and reduced chemical usage and labor costs.

Nutrol® is a true bu er. Not only will it acidify water but, once the tank solu on reaches equilibrium, it will maintain a constant pH while you mix and apply the chemical.

It’s error-free since you can’t add too much Nutrol® to the tank (see Chart 1).

Nutrol® is easy to use:• Determine the manufacturer’s recommended

pH for the product you intend to apply.

• Check the pH of your water. Perform a jar-test to determine how much Nutrol® is needed to buffer the water to the desired pH. (see Table 2 and Chart 1 for procedures).

Note: a 1% solu on is the typical applica on rate.

• Add half the water to the tank.

• Slowly add Nutrol® to tank while agitating the solution.

• Add the remaining water and con nue agita on. Nutrol® is completely soluble.

• When pH reaches the desired pH add other components to the tank.

• Apply immediately after mixing.

What is a chelate?The word chelate (pronounced: “key-late”) is derived from the Greek word “chele” which literally means “claw”. Hence, chelate refers to the pincer-like manner in which a metal nutrient ion is encircled by the larger organic molecule (the claw), usually called a ligand or chelator.

Chelated micronutrients are protected from oxida on, precipita on, and immobiliza on in certain condi ons because the organic molecule (the ligand) can combine and form a ring encircling the micronutrient. The pincer-like manner in which the micronutrient is bonded to the ligand changes the micronutrient’s surface property and favors the uptake e�ciency of foliarly applied micronutrients.

Chela on occurs when certain large molecules form mul ple bonds with a micronutrient, protec ng it from reac ng with other elements in the nutrient solu on and increasing its availability to the plant.

Why is Krystal Klear Iron so e ec ve? Dual Chela on: U lizes patented, biodegradable IDS in conjunc on with EDTA to maximize the bene ts of both chela ng agents.Stability Constant, which refers to the equilibrium state of a metal ca on and a ligand to form a chela ng complex: A good stability constant is one in which the bond is strong enough to hold the metal in solu on but not so strong that it doesn’t release the metal when applied.

Number of ligands: This refers to the ligands or “legs” that bond the metal to the chela ng agents. For example, EDTA has 6 and Baypure has 5 ligands while citric acid has 3 carboxylic ligands and glucoheptonate has 1. The higher the number of legs means more ca on surface area is covered.

That is why both EDTA and Baypure chelated metals are stable in orthophosphate solu ons for an extended period while others fall apart and precipitate over me.

Sulfentrazone 4L SELECT™ is a soil-applied selective, flowable herbicide that contains 4 pounds of active ingredient per gallon. Sulfentrazone 4L Select can be used to control broadleaf, grass and sedge weeds in established turfgrasses (seeded, sodded or sprigged), including residential and institutional lawns, athletic fields, golf course fairways and roughs, commercial sod farms and many non-crop and industrial sites. Brown Patch First appears as a smoke ring. Plant leaves then appear watersoaked before turning dark brown in patches up to 3 feet wide.Occurs in Spring / Fall / Winter when outside temperature isunder 70 degrees accompanied with high humidity.

Anthracnose Can occur both as a foliar blight and a rot of the crown, stembase, and roots. Anthracnose foliar blight appears as irregularyellow or bronze patches. On plants affected with anthracnosebasal rot, a dark brown or black color is present at the base ofthe plant. Occurs in stress areas with summertime tempera-tures and moisture.

Pythium Blight Begins as circular spots with light brown water soaked appear-ance. Can feel slimy to touch and infect large areas of turfquickly. Occurs in summertime, frequently follows a nitrogenapplication.

Curvularia Creates irregularly shaped patches of thinned turf. Affectedplants initially show yellow and green patterns that extenddownwards from the leaf tip. Affected leaves turn brown, thengray as it dies. Occurs during late spring, summer, and earlyfall when there are long periods of damp leaves.

Take All Patch Reddish-brown or yellow areas of dying or dead grass. Infec-tion centers appear as rings, crescents, or spots. Initial out-break may resemble Fusarium, but will continue to develop -patches can grow up to 10 feet wide. Appears in the latespring or early summer after turf has been stressed from hot,dry weather, even though moist, cool conditions favor infectionand growth of the fungus.

Dollar Spot Small circular sunken patches, of up to 3 inches. On golfcourse greens the disease appears as white or tan spots ofdead turf about the size of a silver dollar. Affected leaves ini-tially show yellow-green blotches, which progress to a lightstraw color with a reddish-brown margin. Generally occurs any-time from late spring to early fall.

Helminthosporium Complex Reddish-brown to purplish-black spots on leaves and stems,and spreads very quickly. Infected leaves will eventually witherand dry to a light tan color. Can occur any time of the year, atleast one species within this fungal group can be active in ourtemperature range.

Fusarium Patch Also known as pink snow mold, appears as a small circularpatch with a distinct smoke ring appearance. Can show a pinkring with white center. Occurs when turf experiences lengthyperiods of cool and wet weather, from late fall to early spring.

Fairy Ring Fairy rings typically appear as rings (or arcs) of dark green andfast-growing turf. They may also appear as rings of slow-grow-ing or killed turf. The center of an infected ring may containweakened or dead grass. The first visible evidence of a newfairy ring is usually a cluster of mushrooms. Appears in moistturf areas from mid spring through early summer.
