2018 For the Love of Art Gala Weekend & Art Auction
Benefitting Booth Western Art Museum
This event is the Museum’s largest annual fundraiser, providing funds for the growth of the
permanent collection, world-class special exhibits, and memorable educational experiences
for students and adults. Our 2018 Honorary Gala Chairs Bob and Barbara Hunter, Gala Chairs
Jim and Cindy Eaton and Boots ‘N’ Saddles Chairs Ron and Lynn Cagle have helped assemble a
great selection of art, experiences, and other items for your consideration.
This catalogue gives gala attendees a sneak preview of the items to be included in our annual
gala fundraiser. It also allows those not attending the opportunity to consider placing an
absentee bid. We look forward to seeing all of you at the event or hearing from you regarding
an absentee bid.
To allow for easier additions, providing the latest information immediately, along with saving
trees and money, this year’s catalogue is being distributed electronically and is available
online. Should you wish to have a printed version, please let us know and we will get it to you
as soon as possible.
Please share this catalogue with friends via e-mail, Facebook, text or other means who might
also wish to place an absentee bid or think about attending next year. Absentee bidders are
asked to call Cathy Hendrix at 770-607-6373 or Lynn Tatum at 770-387-1541.
In addition to the auction, we will continue a tradition started in 2015, asking attendees to
raise their paddle in support of the HAAS Fund, named for Joyce and my four children
(Hadley, Ansley, Alex and Stephen) and established to help bring more students to the Booth.
We greatly appreciate the artists and others who have donated auction items and the many
sponsors who make this event possible. Please bid early and often in support of the Booth!

A TRUE RENAISSANCE MAN – ED DWIGHT – TO BE HONORED WITH
BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
In conjunction with Booth Western Art Museum’s annual For the
Love of Art Gala & Art Auction, the Museum honors an artist
from its Permanent Collection with the Booth Western Art Museum
Lifetime Achievement Award. It was announced at the 2017 For the
Love of Art Gala & Art Auction that artist Ed Dwight will become
the tenth-ever recipient of the award, joining Howard Terpning,
G. Harvey, Kenneth Riley, Fred Fellows, Glenna Goodacre,
Mort Künstler, Roy Anderson, Tom Hill, and Robert McGinnis.
Following through on a childhood dream to become an artist, Ed
Dwight created more than 50 bronzes depicting pioneers, explorers,
trappers, farmers and soldiers of the old West, exhibited throughout
the country - gaining widespread critical acclaim. However, Dwight
did not have a direct path to artistic success. His circuitous route
included careers as an Air Force Test Pilot, Astronaut Candidate,
IBM Computer Systems Engineer, Aviation Consultant, Real Estate
Developer, Restauranteur, and – holder of degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and Fine Art – a true
renaissance man…who also had to overcome the obstacles placed before him as an African American.
Ed Dwight was chosen by President John F. Kennedy to become the first Black Astronaut candidate and
had Kennedy lived, Dwight may well have walked on the Moon. When circumstances prevented him from
accomplishing this goal, he simply made new ones. Achieving success in several areas of business before
beginning his art career in 1978, Dwight has become one of the most prolific and insightful sculptors in
America, with more than 100 public monuments to his credit – including the iconic sculptures of Hank
Aaron and Phil Niekro at Turner Field in Atlanta.
One of his most important bodies of work is the
series entitled Black Frontier Spirit in the
American West. Several examples from the
series were exhibited in the Booth Western Art
Museum exhibition Black West: Buffalo Soldiers,
Black Cowboys and Untold Stories. Dwight’s
1980 masterwork Battle of Clay Creek Mission is
in the Booth Museum Permanent Collection, a
gift of Barbara and Robert P. Hunter, Jr.
