Faith Flame

Well, it’s August. It’s the hottest month of the year for most of the country. I don’t know if that

holds up statistically, but it sure feels that way, and not just for Florida but for everywhere. August

is a month where there just isn’t a lot of activity. We call them the dog days of summer because,

like dogs, we lay around and try to do as little as possible. Except for vacations, and a lot of peo-

ple take them during August.

Now, while we sit around and do as little as possible during August we are also practicing our faith.

We are trusting and believing that August will come to an end, the heat will decrease and fall will

soon be on our doorstep. Again, that’s most of the country. Not us. We exercise our faith that

the heat will leave by, oh, October would be nice. It’s a faith that is based on a sure thing – the

rotation and orbit of the earth around the sun. Our faith in Christ is also based on a sure and cer-

tain thing – the death and resurrection of Jesus our Lord.

In one of our favorite movies, Leap Year, there’s a line that says, “Have a little faith. It’ll all work

out.” In the movie this was used in a negative way as father’s excuse for his lack of responsibility

and reliability. But in our relationship with God it’s actually a good thing. Jesus said, “If you have

faith as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Be moved into the sea,’ and it would obey

you.”

There are those who don’t put a lot of stock in faith. Atheists and a lot of scientists downplay, if

not openly reject, the notion of faith. A lot of society agrees with them. What they don’t realize,

of course, is the amount of faith we live with every day. I don’t really have a clue about how so

much of the stuff I depend on everyday actually works, but I believe when I press “on,” or turn the

key, stuff is going to work.

We don’t have to stay at a “little faith.” We get to grow in faith. The Bible states in Jude 1:20-21, “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.”

So let’s continue to have faith, and let’s continue to grow in that faith, keeping ourselves in the

love of God, as we wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ for some cooler weather. Oh yeah,

and eternal life too. Blessings!
