CEO’S MESSAGE
“As far as we have come, I am challenging and stretching outside of my comfort zone to think bolder and act even more daringly in our next decade. At the heart of the future I see, are some fruitful questions that keep me up at night: ‘How do we do a better job of infusing social enterprise and wealth-building strategies into the field?’ There is so much more to be done before we can declare America as a true promise of place for Black men and boys.”

“Nationally, because of concerted efforts like the Campaign for Black Achievement, I’ve seen scores of foundations and corporations commit to work toward the same goals. This alignment of actions has the potential to address disparities affecting young men of color in an unprecedented way.”

“Everybody here is a leader, everybody here is involved with boards and leadership in their organizations....If we can all come together that we’re going to be looking out for each other and building an opportunity for all of us to grow together, then we’ll be able to impact our society and some of these issues that we care so desperately about will start to diminish.”
2018 HONOREES
“Through the Open Society Foundations, I have worked for many years to address the systemic injustices that prevent so many African American men from achieving their full potential. We established a Campaign for Black Male Achievement to work in conjunction with other initiatives to increase the number and effectiveness of education programs for young men of color, in order to open pathways to challenging, fulfilling jobs and to strengthen minority families devastated by the systemic and unjust removal of so many men—and women—from their midst.”

KASSERIAN INGERA
If you’ve had the privilege of hearing Tonya Allen speak, chances are you’ve heard her share the story of the traditional Maasai tribe greeting, “Kasserian ingera?” and the importance of following their example of putting the needs of children first. But, Tonya doesn’t just talk about putting children first. She lives it – EVERY DAY.
For many years, Tonya has worked tirelessly to ensure the needs of every child in our community are being addressed and keeping their education as the top priority. Because of her efforts, the lives and futures of countless children have dramatically improved.
Congratulations to Tonya and all the deserving 2018 CBMA honorees who always put children first.

METRO UNITED WAY’S WORKWe’re a better community when we make sure everyone has
real opportunities to reach their full potential.
Across Kentuckiana, research shows that race, place and other factors contribute to different opportunities and
outcomes in relation to our work in education, financial independence and health. At Metro United Way, we are
committed to identifying and bringing to our community the best solutions to eliminate the barriers that have made
generational prosperity less attainable for some.
Our Black Male Achievement Initiative allows us the opportunity to use targeted, cross-sector interventions that invest in leaders, organizations and strategies to improve
the life outcomes and the collective upward mobility of black men and boys in Louisville.
GUIDING PRINCIPLEMetro United Way believes that black males are assets to our
community and that their potential is unlimited.
We envision a community where all black men and boys in Louisville have access to opportunities and are valued as
contributing citizens and people.

His classroom has no permanent teacher. Mom is sick. And his tooth hurts.
A child’s adverse experiences — especially chronic stress — play a big part in their social, emotional, academic, and health outcomes. The Opportunity Institute is helping children of color and children who are economically disadvantaged overcome these obstacles. We advance economic mobility, equity, and racial justice by supporting policies and practices that advance whole child equity, intervention services, and trauma-informed care.

Since President Obama launched My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) in 2014, Shawn Dove and the Campaign for Black Male Achievement has been a key ally in shaping the strategy for what is now the MBK Alliance, an initiative of the Obama Foundation. MBK Alliance continues to work with CBMA and other partners across the country to build safe and supportive communities for boys and young men of color—communities where they feel valued and have clear pathways to opportunity. We look forward to the next 10 years of loving, learning and leading together.
CONGRATULATIONS CBMA ON 10 YEARS OF BEING OUR BROTHERS’ KEEPER!

A tribute to Tonya Allen . . .We have found a virtuous woman. “Her price is far above rubies”. “She stretch out her hands to the poor”, and opens her heart to all children: “strength and honor are her clothing”. “She opens her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness”. “Her work does praise her”, and her gifts and talents make room for her in spaces and places.
