CHRISTOPHE GIROT Curriculum Vitae

Christophe Girot is Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture at the Architecture Department of the ETH in Zurich. He received a dual Masters in Architecture and Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley, and was Chair of Design at the Versailles School of Landscape Architecture. His teaching and research interests span new topological methods in landscape design, landscape perception and analysis through new media, and contemporary theory and history of landscape architecture. At the ETH he co-founded the Landscape Visualization and Modeling Laboratory (LVML) with Professor Adrienne Grêt-Regamey in 2010. His professional practice focuses on large-scale landscape projects, using advanced 3D GIS techniques that contribute to the design of more sustainable landscape environments such as the Alptransit Deposit in Sigirino and the Third Rhône River Correction in the Canton of Valais. He currently directs an advanced design research project on the Ciliwung River in Jakarta for the ETH Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore.

Research ½ Selected Projects Landscape Topologies for Robotic Construction

The goal of this research is to develop and improve the pragmatic and architectural applications of the large scale robotic construction technologies using topological design methods in landscape architecture.

Cultural Laboratory Seoul – Research on Culture-Specific Landscape Design in South Korea

The aim of the research is to explore thoroughly, how different cultural and historical design approaches can be correlated in contemporary landscape design.

The Acoustic Dimension of Landscape Architecture – Investigations on the Perception and Implementation of Landscape Acoustics The goal of this project is to develop a model of landscape acoustics as an integrated design practice by linking acoustic qualities to spatial concepts of landscape design.

20

From Rarity to Everyday Culture

The research investigates the significant role of exotic ornamental trees and shrubs within the Swiss bourgeois garden culture in the 19th century.

Pavilion and Clearing – the Landscape of Modernity as Aesthetic Counterworld A typological investigation in architecture and landscape architecture based on the work of Mies van der Rohe, Alfred Caldwell and Ludwig Hilberseimer.

Village in the River Research on the transformation of urban riverine landscape in Indonesia. A comparative case study of contemporary sites in Java sets the premise for research on the Ciliwung River in Jakarta. The socio-spatial processes within these landscapes are analysed and connected with residents' everyday experiences to other actors and processes involved in riverine landscape transformation. This investigation integrates varied perspectives of landscape transformation, from both communities and government. Point Clouds as a Representative and Performative Format for Landscape Architecture – a Case Study of the Ciliwung River in Jarkarta, Indonesia The Ciliwung has borne witness to alarming urban growth with a multitude of factors placing tremendous pressure on the river. This has resulted in an increase in the frequency and magnitude of devastating floods. The goal of this research is to find a way to convince stakeholders that an alternative flood mitigation strategy is a possibility – other than the planned canalisation of the river – while uncovering the potentials of using point cloud data to do so. Floodscapes – Contemporary Landscape Strategies in Times of Climate Change This investigation leads to a conceptual reflection on contemporary designers's positions on nature and flood risk, and develop the tools, methods, and concepts needed for the strategic choices that will have to be made to keep Swiss and other European cities both safe and attractive by the creation of flexible and resilient landscapes. Theodor (1810-1993) and Otto (1844-1906) Froebel – Landscape Gardeners and Plant Breeders in Zurich Research on the significance of their work for the development of Swiss landscape architecture in the 19th and 20th centuries. Dieter Kienast (1945-1998) Designing Nature This research presents the first comprehensive critique of the work of Dieter Kienast covering the period from the 1970's to the 1990's. It showes to what extent Kienast developed a new aesthetics for designing with nature in the city through his investigation in methods of plant sociology and his research on spontaneous vegetation in the city that he started at the Gesamthochschule in Kassel. Filmic Mapping The research focuses on the analysis of filmic representations of landscape. On the one hand, the shift within landscape theory from an aesthetic to a dynamic landscape is studied, on the other hand, film's ability to connect viewers intellectually and emotionally to the diegesis and to create a kind of secondary experiential quality of landscape.

Exhibiting Nature – Swiss Garden Expositions between Art and Ecology The investigation discusses the Swiss garden expositions G59 and Gründ 80 as an expression of society's understanding of nature, which fundamentally changed within a short period of time and illustrates an increasingly complex structure. Gustav Ammann – Modernist Landscapes in Switzerland Research on Gustav Ammann (1885-1955), garden architect based in Zurich. He is considered the key figure of garden and landscape architecture in Switzerland of the first half of the 20th century.
