Palmerston North Boys’ High School is a state school of close to 1800 young men. Founded in 1902, we are a school that has developed strong traditions over time in and out of the classroom.

I would like to wish the 2018 Cricket Tour group all the very best for their upcoming tour. Tours such as this, and the numerous other tours undertaken by a range of groups from the school in recent years, be they sporting, cultural or academic, enable our students to experience different countries and different cultures. They are a wonderful opportunity to learn about themselves as well as the world.

The first overseas tour by a PNBHS cricket group was to Australia in 1984. Since then a number of tours have taken place and they have provided our young men with an opportunity to play against some of the best young cricketers from around the world.

Cricket has traditionally been a strong sport at PNBHS and this year the school fielded 19 teams. These teams were involved in a range of local and regional competitions. The 1st XI have qualified for the National Secondary Schools finals – the Gillette Cup – for the 18th time and this tour provides an ideal opportunity for the team to experience a high standard of cricket as they prepare for this prestigious tournament.

A number of the school’s Old Boys have played in this tournament, and it is good to see Old Boys Adam Milne, Ross Taylor and George Worker currently playing for the New Zealand team. Other recent NZ representatives who are PNBHS Old Boys are Jacob Oram, Jamie How and Mathew Sinclair. Perhaps one of the young men on this tour may one day follow in their footsteps.

Our thanks as a school community are extended to all who have supported this tour – to host schools, staff members, coaches, billets, parents, friends and sponsors. Without your generosity tours such as this simply would not happen.

We are most grateful to all who have contributed and in turn look forward to hosting some of you in Palmerston North, New Zealand, in the future.

It is with great fondness that I look back on my time at Palmerston North Boys’ High School. The lessons I learned at school about both cricket and life have stood me in good stead. Wearing the blue cap meant that I belonged to a very special club – a group of lifelong friends who experienced great highs and lows on our own “field of dreams”.

I was lucky enough to go on the PNBHS cricket tour of Singapore and South Africa in 2001. It soon became clear that this was not going to be a run-of-the-mill, normal cricketing experience. For almost a month, I got to spend every waking hour with like-minded people, totally immersed in the game I had learned to love. While we were visiting far-flung places, everything was experienced through a cricketing lens. It didn’t take long for me to decide that this was better than school or any other career. The cricketing life was for me.

Touring with your mates in a sports team is one of the great opportunities in life. Going to foreign countries and facing the best young cricketers in those countries is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to test yourself. Living in close proximity for more than 3 weeks and being tested daily by some of the best age-grade players in the world will crystallise your feelings about the game and your life in it. It set me on a career path which has lasted until the present. And I have enjoyed almost every moment of it.

For a professional player, travelling abroad and facing top-class opposition in their home conditions is the ultimate measure. This crop of young cricketers is fortunate enough (as I was) to experience this while at school and I hope that they make the most of it.

I know that as PNBHS boys, you will give of your very best every time you take the field. That is the nature of the school. I just hope that you use the total experience to grow and develop as a person as well. The best advice that I can give is: Be open to any and all experiences and do it with a smile on your face. You are very lucky to have this opportunity.

PNBHS – A Cricketing School

Palmerston North Boys’ High School (PNBHS) is one of the largest cricket clubs in New Zealand with over 200 students playing cricket at various levels, fielding 18 teams. Its four top elevens compete in the Manawatu Cricket Association’s adult competitions with the 1st XI being in the Premier One Grade, the 2nd XI in Premier Two, the 3rd XI and the 4th XI in Premier Three. PNBHS is by far the biggest contributing school to the Manawatu Cricket Association’s Premier One Grade and Senior Men’s representative teams. Well over half of all the cricketers in these teams are either students at, or old boys of PNBHS.

Because of the substantial student interest and involvement in cricket at Palmerston North Boys’ High School, the school has embarked on a programme of offering its promising players the opportunity of extending their cricketing abilities and skills by going on a pre-season overseas tour every three years. Each tour has been set up to give young cricketers the chance to play up to ten games in the three weeks of the September/October holidays. The benefits of such international exchanges for each student have been immense, not only in terms of their cricket, but also their personal development.

The first tour was made in 1984 to Queensland, and subsequent tours have been to Queensland and Singapore (1987); Queensland and Fiji (1990); Queensland, Northern Territory and Singapore (1993); Queensland, New South Wales and Singapore (1996); Singapore and South Africa (1998) followed by repeat tours to South Africa in 2001, 2004 and 2007. In 2009 and 2010 the school toured Queensland, Australia. They went to India and South Africa in 2012 and most recently, India and Sri Lanka in 2015.

This year’s tour will be the school’s fourteenth overseas tour and we will visit Western Australia and South Africa. The previous tours have had an enormous impact on cricket in the school and on our competitiveness, not only against local association sides, but also our traditional annual rivals of Napier Boys’ High School, St Patrick’s College, Wellington College, Auckland Grammar School and in the Gillette Cup and Super 8 Competitions.

Achievements: In 1990 the 1st XI were the winners of the inaugural New Zealand Gillette Cup National Champion Secondary School Cricket Competition. The 1st XI has continued to achieve in this very prestigious knockout competition by placing second in 1993; third in 1994; second in 1995; they were the winners in 1998 following the very successful tour of Singapore and South Africa and placed second in 1999 and 2000. The 1st XI won the Gillette Cup again in 2004 were placed third in 2006, 2010 and 2012. In 2015 and 2017, they placed fifth. In 2018, the team has again qualified as one of the top 6 cricket secondary schools in the country, making it the 18th time the school has appeared in the Gillette Cup finals. (Renamed the NZ Secondary Schools Boys’ 1st XI Cup).

Palmerston North Boys’ High School Old Boys who have played for New Zealand include: Chester Holland, Norm Gallichan, Geoff Rabone, Noel Harford, Don Beard, Bryan Yuile, Vic Pollard, David O’Sullivan, Derek Stirling, Ian Smith, Matthew Sinclair, Jamie How and Jacob Oram. Ross Taylor, Adam Milne and George Worker are currently playing for New Zealand.

Staff on Tour

PNBHS staff member since 2000, Specialist Classroom Teacher, Year 13 Dean and English teacher. Manager of the school’s 1st XI Cricket Team. Coached cricket at George Randell High School and Cambridge High School in East London, South Africa. This is his first overseas tour for the school.

PNBHS staff member since 2014, Physical Education Studies teacher. Coach of the school’s 1st XI Cricket Team. Played representative cricket for Taranaki and currently for Manawatu. This is his first overseas tour for the school.

PNBHS staff member since 1991, Director of Teaching and Learning, Mathematics teacher and former hostel manager. Former coach of the school’s 1st XI Cricket Team. Played representative cricket for Manawatu and Central Districts. Played indoor cricket for Manawatu, Central Districts and New Zealand. This is his 9th overseas tour for the school.
