Lecture 1 Dermatologic Diseases: Common, Uncommon and When to Refer Candrice Heath, MD

Abstract: The skin is the largest organ in the body. Often people with rashes present initially to primary care physicians. It is important for primary care physicians to recognize common skin disorders and know when to refer. Dermatology is best learned by seeing various skin conditions multiple times in multiple skin types. Common skin conditions will be presented, appropriate treatments and long-term implications of various skin conditions will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will:

-Recognize common and some uncommon skin conditions-Initiate treatment for common disorders-Know when to refer a patient to a dermatologist

Lecture 2 Incorporating Osteopathic Manipulation into a Primary Care Visit Jamie Rapacciuolo, DO

Abstract: Dr. Rapacciuolo will cover the history and philosophy behind the evolution of osteopathic medicine and how it is applied today to enhance patients’ healing capacities. Osteopathic manual stimulation and treatment can offer patients who are either non-compliant or resistant to medicinal therapies an alternative solution.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will: - Review basic concepts of Osteopathic Manual Medicine (OMM) and Philosophy- Understand how OMM can be useful for common primary care disorders.- Understand how to incorporate OMM into your primary care visit.

Lecture 3 My Joints Hurt: A Review of the Major Arthritides Margot Savoy, MD, MPH, FAAFP, FABC, CPE, CMQ, FAAPL

Abstract: This will be a review of the various types of arthritis, susceptibility, diagnosis and management of arthritic disorders. Through an interactive and engaging presentation, learners will understand how to identify and manage treatment in different patient with this debilitating disease.

Lecture 4 Famous People with Diabetes: A Case Study Exploring the Use of New and Emerging Basal Insulins Neil Skolnik, MD

Abstract: This presentation will examine barriers to insulin initiation and the strategies for overcoming them. We will evaluate data and recommendations pertaining to basal insulin selection. We will apply the evidence regarding safe and appropriate selection and use of basal insulin to clinical scenarios. This lecture contains a pre- and post-test for learners to assess their knowledge of managing diabetes.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will: - Learners will identify strategies for overcoming the barriers to insulin management- Understand how and when to administer and adjust basal insulin- Recognize the implications of newer basal insulin in managing patients with diabetes

Abstract: Learn about the most current state of Family Medicine advocacy, health care reform, Physician resiliency and Health of the Public and Science that the AAFP is working towards on behalf of their members and the specialty.

Abstract: This presentation will discuss the opioid crisis as it currently affects Delawarians. We will identify patient risk factors to help physicians address this epidemic more successfully and discuss strategies on how to move forward.

Abstract: The focus will be on the new AHA/ACC et. al. hypertension guidelines published 11/2017. Focus will be on the evidence behind the new guidelines, and how family physicians should incorporate these guidelines, versus the 2014 “JNC8” guidelines.

Lecture 7 Top Articles in Primary Care Neil Skolnik, MD; John Russell, MD

Abstract: Drs. John Russell and Neil Skolnik, editors of ClinicalEdge, a weekly newsletter published by Journal of Family Practice and the Cleveland Clinics Journal of Medicine which goes to approximately 220,000 primary care physicians each week, select the most important articles published in the medical literature over the last year. They summarize the articles and put the information into clinical context. Topics they will cover include, but are not limited to, update on vaccinations (hepatitis b, meningitis, HPV and the new zooster vaccine); PCSK-9 inhibitors and cardiovascular outcomes; Physical activity and its effect on mortality; Treatment of skin infections (cellulitis and abcess); Low-dose rivaroxaban for extended treatment/prophylaxis of DVT; STD Update; Vitamin D update; Cardiovascular Outcomes Trials in Diabetes; side effects of short courses of steroids; Statins in older adults; and more.

Adrian Wilson, DO, FAAFP Delaware Academy of Family Physicians, President Elect & Annual Conference Chair

Dr. Wilson is Associate Medical Director of Family Medicine and a family physician at Westside Family Healthcare in Wilmington, DE. He received his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed residency training at Abington Memorial Hospital. Currently President-Elect of the DAFP, he will be installed as DAFP President by AAFP President Dr. Michael Munger this afternoon.

Candrice Heath, MD Premier Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Newark, DE

Dr. Heath is board-certified in dermatology, pediatrics, including pediatric dermatology. She is a nationally recognized author, speaker and expert in dermatology for children and adults. She received her medical degree from the University of Virginia and completed pediatric training at Emory University and residency in dermatology from Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s, Roosevelt and Beth Israel Medical Centers in New York City. Dr. Heath is now in private practice at Premier Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery in Newark, Delaware. Raising awareness about the skin cancer risks in people with skin of color is part of her mission. In addition to educating her patients and social media audience on skin care, she is dedicated to educating both primary care providers who are on the front lines of healthcare and the general public.

Dr. Heath serves on the Speakers’ Bureau of Pfizer and has indicated that she has no financial conflicts of interest relevant to her presentation.

Michael L. Munger, MD, FAAFP President, American Academy of Family Physicians Leawood, KS

Dr. Munger, a family physician in Overland Park, Kansas, is president of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 129,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. As AAFP president, Munger advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

Dr. Munger is a board-certified family physician and has been practicing in the Kansas City metropolitan area for 30 years. He is currently in practice at Saint Luke’s Physicians Group in Overland Park, where he also serves as vice president of medical affairs for primary care. The group has 105 physician members at 14 different sites, three of which maintain Level 3 medical home designation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and 11 of which are participants in the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus Initiative. CPC+ is an outcome of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Center.

Dr. Munger served as a volunteer clinical assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas, and as associate faculty at both the Baptist Medical Center Family Practice Residency in Kansas City, Missouri, and the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine.

A member of the AAFP since 1986, he has served on numerous commissions and committees, including the Commission on Education and the Commission on Education’s Subcommittee on National Conference Planning, both of which he also chaired. He also served on the Commission on Health of the Public and Science. Dr. Munger deepened his Congress of Delegates involvement by serving as a member of the Reference Committee on Education, the Reference Committee on Public Health and as chair of the Credentials Committee.

An active member of his local community, Dr. Munger served as spokesperson for the Clean Air Kansas City initiative and as a member of the Overland Park Chamber of Commerce’s Public Smoking Restriction task force. For nearly a decade, he has also volunteered at the Kansas City Free Health Clinic.

Dr. Munger earned his medical degrees from University of Missouri – Kansas City and completed his family medicine residency at what was then the Goppert Family Practice Residency Program at Baptist Medical Center, also in Kansas City.

Jamie Rapacciuolo, DO Family physician, Christiana Care Health System, Newark, DE

As an undergraduate, Dr. Rapacciuolo studied biochemistry at the University of Tampa. She earned a master’s in biological science at the Drexel University College of Medicine and a doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Rapacciuolo completed her residency program at Christiana Care Health System in family medicine and the osteopathic manipulative medicine/neuromusculoskeletal medicine program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In addition to her work as an attending physician, Dr. Rapacciuolo has also served as a faculty member at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and as the medical director in the department of family medicine.

Currently, Dr. Rapacciuolo is a member of the Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the American Academy of Osteopathy, the American Osteopathic Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians, Delaware Chapter. Her participation in the medical community also includes several presentations to the DAFP and a publication in the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.

John Russell, MD Family Physician, Abington Hospital-Jefferson Health Jenkintown, PA

Dr. Russell is a board certified family physician at Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health in Jenkintown, PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Temple University and his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Medical School. He completed his residency training from Abington Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Russell serves on the Speakers’ Bureau of Sanofi Pasteur and has indicated that he has no financial conflicts of interest with his presentation.

Dr. Savoy currently sees patients at the Temple University Physicians Faculty Practice in north Philadelphia and is an attending physician at Temple University Hospital. Dr. Savoy graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2002, completed Family Medicine Residency Program at the Crozer-Keystone Family Medicine Residency Program (Springfield, PA) in 2005 and graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health in 2008 with a Masters in Public Health in Public Health Leadership with a focus on Public Health Practice. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, the Certifying Commission in Medical Management, and a Fellow of the Advisory Board Company.

Neil Skolnik, MD Family Physician, Abington Hospital-Jefferson Health Jenkintown, PA

Dr. Skolnik is board certified in family medicine and geriatric medicine and is a family physician at Abington Hospital – Jefferson Health in Jenkintown, PA. He received his undergraduate degree from Union College of New York and his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine, Medical School. He completed his residency training in Family Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and then went on to complete a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson UH, as well.
