A Continued Dialogue about Race in Response to the Terrence Talley Presentation Privilege In the December newsletter, we talked about the seven categories of otherness -- ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, mental and physical ability, age, and socioeconomic status -- and how life can be drastically different for those in the dominant and subordinate groups. For individuals who are dominant in most or all of the seven categories, it can be especially difficult to understand the struggles that those in the subordinate groups face such as racism, sexism, religious oppression, heterosexism, ableism, ageism, and classism, respectively. Being dominant in one or more categories of otherness comes with privileges that those in the subordinate group don’t have. Examples of privilege include: I am white, so I have the privilege of seeing others who look like me represented in the media. I am a male, and people tend to listen to me when I speak. I am middle or upper class, and I can afford the necessary school supplies and athletics fees for my child. I am Christian, and I am able to be open about my religious beliefs and practices. One of the privileges of being in the dominant group is not having to think about the privileges that come with belonging to that group. I don’t notice when a building is not wheelchair accessible, for example, because it doesn’t affect me (I am a part of the dominant group of physically able individuals). If I were in a wheelchair, however, not having access to buildings would be a huge obstacle in my daily life. The same is true for the other categories of otherness. Males, whites, Christians, heterosexuals, and middle and upper class individuals don’t often have to think about the challenges that those in the subordinate groups face. You may even hear someone say something that dismisses these very-real obstacles, such as “With hard work, anyone can be successful” or “I never got a handout; I had to earn everything I have.” While hard work is an admirable and beneficial quality, it does not mitigate innate disadvantages or automatically guarantee success. It can be difficult to recognize that sometimes we take for granted privileges that are inherently ours just because of the way we look or what we believe. Something we can all work on is putting ourselves in other people’s shoes. By making a conscious effort to think about the ways in which our differences can sometimes work for us or against us, we can become more empathetic and work towards leveling the playing field. Continue the conversation at home with these discussion questions: What privileges do you have because of the dominant group(s) you may fall into? What challenges do you face because of the subordinate group(s) you may fall into? Looking for more information or ideas for talking to your kids? During this school year we have been promoting the message of valuing diversity and fostering kindness toward all. We began our messaging this fall with a presentation by Terrence Talley and most recently many students heard a message from Muggsy Bogues. We are working to sustain the message and expand the dialogue with students, staff and the community. Privilege

In the December newsletter, we talked about the seven categories of otherness -- ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, mental and physical ability, age, and socioeconomic status -- and how life can be drastically different for those in the dominant and subordinate groups.

Examples of privilege include:

I am white, so I have the privilege of seeing others who look like me represented in the media.

Civics Test - Graduation Requirement As part of the 2015 state budget, the Wisconsin legislature added the passage of a Civics test as a Wisconsin graduation requirement. This test is made up of the questions used as part of the

naturalization or citizenship process. This graduation requirement began with the Class of 2017. Students at Kimberly High School typically fulfill this requirement through their freshman social studies course, either AP Human Geography or Civics and Geography. Students who do not complete as part of that course are given follow-up opportunities to insure compliance with the graduation requirement. Recently there has been an update to this requirement. As part of the 2017 state budget passed this summer, the state legislature changed the passing score for the Civics test from 60 correct answers to 65. This change applies to students in the Class of 2018 and beyond.

More information on the test, including the actual questions and answers, can be found at

https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/educators/educational-products

Winter is here. If weather conditions dictate that there will be no school, a decision to keep the schools closed is usually made by 6:30 a.m. Parents with students in school receive a direct call, text and/or email from our auto-call system since that is the fastest way to communicate with thousands of parents at one time. As a reminder: If you have a

new phone number or email address, please update your information in the Infinite Campus parent portal or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal.

Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local stations such as these rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WHBY-1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM, WEMI-91.9 FM, WGEE-1360 AM, and WOZZ-93.5FM; and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If other school events, such as concerts or sporting events are also cancelled because of weather, they are typically communicated through these stations as well.

The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate school closures, so we ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to the radio and T.V. stations listed for the timeliest updates.

SENIORS AND SENIOR PARENTS

Graduation is Wednesday, May 30th at 7:00 p.m. Class Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Top 10 are based on grades following the third quarter of the senior year. We must use this date in order to meet timelines

for submission of materials.

Seniors should start taking care of paying outstanding fees and fines that have been accessed. Updated invoices will be mailed home in February. Please note that caps and gowns will be handed the Friday prior to graduation once all obligations are taken care of.

Are you signed up for Graduation Celebration? Unsure? Stop by the main office to find out.

Four (4) tickets will be sent home to families toward the end of April for the graduation ceremony. If you are in need of more than four tickets you can call the main office between May 1st and 7th to request additional tickets for the ceremony.

1662 E. Kennedy Avenue Kimberly, Wisconsin 54136 920-687-3024 FAX 920-687-3029

September 27, 2017

Dear Kimberly High School Parent or Guardian,

Beginning in the 14-15 school year, the state of Wisconsin introduced a number of changes to the state’s

student assessment system. Since that time, those changes have remained consistent and include:

Aspire Early High School Assessment – grades nine and ten

ACT and WorkKeys – grade eleven

Forward Social Studies assessment – grade ten

The ACT Early High School Assessment will cover five subject areas for students in grades nine and ten:

Reading, Math, Writing, Language Arts and Science. The tests will be computer-delivered and will be spread

out over multiple days. Students in grade nine will test during their English classes the weeks of April 9 and 16.

Students in grade ten will test on April 10 & 11 during a modified school schedule. In addition, students in grade

ten will take the Wisconsin Forward Exam, a Social Studies-only test that will be administered by computer on

Wednesday, April 11.

In addition, every junior in the state of Wisconsin is required to take the ACT and Work Keys assessments. This

year those tests will be held on February 27 and 28. All juniors will report on those dates during a modified

Family Move - Outside of the Kimberly Area School District

When a family moves outside of the Kimberly Area School District, students may continue to attend the school where they are currently enrolled if they qualify for a Tuition Waiver (obtained from the district office). Students who qualify for a Tuition Waiver are entitled to continue their enrollment through the waiver period. However, they are required to apply for Open Enrollment during the next Open Enrollment application period if they want to remain in the Kimberly Area School District after the Tuition Waiver has expired.

Family Move - Within the Kimberly Area School District

When a family move occurs within the Kimberly Area School District, students may continue to attend the school where they are currently enrolled even though their residence has changed to another Kimberly Area School District attendance area.

Parents who wish to have their student(s) remain in the same school after a move within the school district must complete the School Request Form located on the district website under Student &

Parents>Enrollment>Attendance and return it to the district office Attn: Sara Vogel.
